Seeing the fish on the fishfinder makes perfect sense to me from my experience in freshwater river fishing. They're hanging back low in the slack water watching the faster flow overhead. Conserving energy until they see a food item pass over and then rush out and grab it. Awesome content as always John.

I know this might seem quite a random question John, but have you ever had any freak tackle failures such as rods snapping for no good reason or a reel shitting its gears all of a sudden. I ask because I think I must have upset Perseidon at some point because I have so much bad luck. 😂 When kit works l normally always catch but when I have a nightmare it's always drastic. Another great video pal, nice one. Love the pictures of the sonar.👊👍😊

No mate. All of my tackle failures are for reasons. I snapped a rod one time on a skate. The rod was outclassed massively. Snapped another in a car door. One more I fell over on top of. Never just a random failure.

My dad goes out fishing with his buddies on the lakes and the Fraser river where they live (central BC, in Canada) and tho I'm not sure what the official rules are, but his rule has always been you only take what you're going to eat that day. He used to take us kids out, tho I only ever caught 1 trout myself. Wrt to his hunting, he's kind of the opposite, where he got what he could legally, to fill up the freezer for the season. His hunting days are long over, but he's still out there fishing up a storm. I wonder if he'd ever come back out this way to do a bit of sea fishing in the family's old stomping grounds. I was sitting here scratching my head, "how the hell does he keep a 25g lure on the bottom at +2kn" I cant manage to keep a bait down at 45m in ½kn drift with 300g lead. Then it struck me, your drift is caused by current, mine is caused by wind, relative speeds mater 😁 The few times i have drifted in zero wind it works ok but then it takes me an hour or so to go a 100m. We have almost no tidal differences, hence no current. So i guess to day i learn't something from you, again 👍

Hi, John. Thanks for taking us along on another productive inshore-jigging trip. One question: When you were fishing the first reef (the one with the rough tidal rip), you lost quite a few pollock because of, you explained, the small treble at the "tail" of the jig. Did you ever consider replacing that hook with a single-perhaps of approximately the same size as the assist hooks at the "head" of the jig? Just curious. Best, Chris (Maine, USA)
@TheFishLocker
@TheFishLocker Жыл бұрын
The reason why I prefer keeping the light treble is because if you snag on the reef, the hooks bend out and you don’t lose the lure. 😉

Excellent video. I’m not too informed regarding the species you are catching. Was wondering if the mackerel you catch are Spanish mackerel, the same as I have caught in Florida? Also an observation on the pollack. The distance from the mouth to the vent on that fish is very short in proportion to its overall length which would seem to lead to excellent volume fillets with good meat from the vent to the tail. In some species this is not the case. Thanks!
@TheFishLocker

That's an interesting question my guess is because it's a commercial boat you have to stick to the commercial rules but that's a guess.

@@TheFishLocker, no I’ve never been out with one. Honestly, I’ve never been on a large fishing boat. Usually a “johnboat” for lake fishing here in the states.

Great session John. Nothing like a light setup and some good sized Pollock, really tests the skills ;-)...Enjoyed...All the best to you, Hannah and of course James. TC... P.s Looking forward to Jim cooking some of your catch soon. 🙂

Can I ask - why do you have 20lb braid and 25lb leader? Doesn't that make it more likely to snap your mainline rather than the leader? Still new to all this! Cheers
@TheFishLocker

The leader is there for any possible abrasion resistance I may need. Rough rocks etc.
