I remembered something about amateur sailing. If the wind is directly against you, you should (tack) turn the ship a bit to the side of the wind and send your ship a bit diagonal to your true course, with your sails turned all the way to the side. That way you get some wind in the sails and you're still going in roughly the same direction. You will just run a bit to the right of your course. Then when you feel too off course, tack left diagonal of the wind, with the sails cranked all the way to the left side, and run a bit diagonal in that direction for a while. That should keep your speed up.

This game is great. Would love to see more on this. Also, to combat not seeing while captaining the ship I recommend you have someone in the crows nest telling the captain what’s infront of him and where to go and where and when to turn, that ship you guys had was probably meant for a larger crew, but 4 is the minimum to make you have it instead of a smaller one.
