I think I can shed a little light on the "Information" screen for a detected hostile. The list of units is listing everything it could possibly be, based on what you know about the contact. The information you know is in green, while white tells you about that unit. For example, for the aircraft you detected at about 12:00, you haven't detected an AN/APQ-120 radar, so that appears in white, but you have an active contact from your own radar, so you know that it's an aircraft, and you know it's RCS is "semi small," but that's all you know about it. The list (including the "and 29 more) at the bottom of the window) just lists everything it could possibly be; in this case, every semi-small aircraft in the game is on that list. If you detected radar emissions from it, the window would narrow things down based on the type of radar you detected. For the ship at 16:15, once again, because you only have an active radar contact, all you know is that it's a surface ship with a medium RCS. Again, if you detected active radar emissions from it, you could narrow down the possibilities. More importantly for surface (and sub-surface) contacts, passive sonar would give you a wealth of information; what type of power it uses (steam, diesel, gas turbine, nuclear and so on), how many propellor shafts it has, how many blades each propellor has. All of this would help you narrow things down to a positive ID. Just remember, unless the list only shows one entry, you don't know what it is beyond the things highlighted in green. Incidentally, all of this is also the reason you can't view the enemy units. If you could just teleport over and see what kind of planes they were, it would defeat the whole purpose of simulating modern naval warfare. The uncertainty is part of the fun; is it an enemy fighter on an attack run, or is it a commercial airliner taking off? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran_Air_Flight_655

This was 100% my job back in the day. Once you can identify the emissions from a specific contact, you can ID the platform. If you've cataloged it previously, I could ID a specific plane/ship. Basically an electronic fingerprint.

Had problems because the Persian Gulf is shallow, warm and noisy from all of the oil rig background noise. Probably the hardest place in the world to find a submarine. Get used to all of the radio chatter. That’s how it was done in the 80s. There was a ballad group air warfare commander, and he designated the tracks and assigned ships to shoot them down via a radio. It was very commerce not to mention there were a lot of buttons to push in order to complete an engagement. Very manual. In fact on that cruiser, the fences were mounted manually before it came out of the missile house. Also, the gun systems had a separate fire control system from the missile systems. On that cruiser, the missile system was being guided by a computer with 128K of memory.

The mod 0 launcher (as in the Farragut class) has only 2 ready service rings and would carry up to 36 Standard missiles, no asroc birds. That's why that class has its own dedicated asroc launcher.

I'm hoping when the game comes out they'll allow selection of the various historically accurate loadouts for the ships as based on upgrades done to them during their lifetime. For example, the scenario shown is set in 1987 but the Fox (Belknap class) already has SM-2ER which only came in her NTU upgrade in 1990, which was her final fitout before her decommissioning. I want to be able to make scenarios which are historically accurate, as well as fictional scenarios with the "latest and greatest" loadout no matter the time period.

Having escorted tags through the streets over moves in Persian Gulf in the 80s I can clear a couple things up for you. As far as emissions control you are correct out in the middle of the Pacific. It’s good to have the sensors off and keep the in guessing where you are. Because the reaction times are so short in the straight of Hormuz they were always on. Not to mention someone on the beach, could stand on the hood of their car see you visually. You weren’t hiding from anyone. The bow mounted sonar’s in the 80s were horrible. And in the Persian Gulf, even the towed array
