I rebuilt an Alpha One out drive on a 5.7l ski boat and sold it just before moving to the Philippines last July. I really enjoyed learning how to work on the drive. My 5.7 was in great shape. I hope to find another boat here to rehabilitate.

I have that same motor in my garage that I have been rebuilding to put back in my 99 Bayliner 2556. You have that one purring like a kitten, good for you. I look forward to this series and can't wait to see inside that Diesel since I have no experience with them. You and Mel are doing wonderful things over there, especially for the family. I respect that.... Joe

That's a sweet-sounding 350! I'm sure you'll have it singing in the boat scooting across the water soon enough! As you know, I am a boat fan... I cut my teeth on them as a kid growing up on Rainy Lake in Minnesota on the border of Canada, eh?... The fishing was great, endless narrows, islands, and talk about going back to nature... Also, lots of adventures with canoes, portages, and roughing it... Of course, bigger in age brings bigger toys for us boys... Kinda like a boat project with a Chevy 350! 😊 Life is grand... Enjoyable series coming! TC... P.S. If you hadn't guessed, looking forward to those coming episodes! Anyway... Carry on, wayward son! (hmmm, there's a song in that phrase, somewhere!)... 🙏🙏🙏 👍😎👍

That thick bottom gasket is a thermal separator to keep some heat away from the base of the carburetor so it doesn’t vapor lock. It looks like you have a Mallory cap on that HEI. I wonder if it has the Mallory or ACELL Component inside the distributor that will help with your dwell vacuum advance. Make sure has plenty of the white special dialectic grease on it to let the heat dissipate. Also make sure you run a ground strap right at the timing adjustment at the base of the distributor too chassis and or battery.
@TexasFilipinoАй бұрын
I am glad you mentioned that ground strap!

Brilliant James !! Btw Plenum is a Latin word. Didn't know they had mercruisers back then!! Lol Is it going to be another ( secret project?). Perhaps a back up generator for electricity or more likely a custom trike, for the lovely Mel to go shopping with. Just need some all weather racing tyres for traction?! Lol All the best from a very moist Pangasinan( getting webbed feet, with all the rain!!) best regards to all!!!

Sounds like you have another Philippine Unicorn! A V-8 GM 5.7L marine engine that RUNS! Like I've said so many times, "maintenance in the Philippines is a foreign concept"! Some of the cobbling-together of things just leaves me in wonder and scratching my head. Amazingly, though, some things actually work! Engine for the Sea Ray? Or the new catamaran?

what gear ratio does the outdrive have for the diesel engine? I was looking at a used Merc diesel like the one you got but found a steyr diesel engine in higher HP so have been installing that one in my boat but can't get gearing right

The motor had low use. Manifolds was in great shape which is the #1 thing on these. I have anotther 5.7 marine engine sitting in Texas that has only about 200 hours on it. Im thinking to ship it over next time I go back and build a exhibition boat here for shows and events in our area. Maybe a jetdrive on it or possibly a surface drive. Have you seen the surface drives? They are like a Thai long tail had a baby with a stern drive !! lol. Only time can tell what I will do. I just know I will be building something until I die!!! Then I will leave happy.

FUEL FUEL FUEL The 350 drinks fuel like a fat kid on Kool Aide. The diesel I bought is known for the most fuel efficient marine inboard on the market. The fuel savings and safety of not transporting gasoline make up for the repair cost.

I have a buddy with a 68 Mustang when we was late teens. His uncle built it off as a roller motor. I had a holley center squirter that we put in it and did it ever bring it alive. Man that motor would wrap up quick. I built a 283 the same way and dropped it in a 71 Vega. Both of our cars was beast. I tried 327 , 350, 383(stroker) and a 400 small block punchout to a 426 with tunnel ram and two carter afb competition series carbs. none of those moters hooked up that vega like the 283 did. Those small block chevy's and fords was beast. I tinkered with small block mopar some but just never liked that much. I will say the 340 was my fav over the 318 or 360. Dodge / Cry always built crappy front ends. Even with the popular 90s and 2000's trucks still dangerous front ends. Death wobble

🌴With All The Work 🙀 & 💲Spent ? Wouldn't it have been cheaper to buy A Brand New Crate MerCruiser Diesel Engine ✅ AUSTRALIAN-GUY
@TexasFilipinoАй бұрын
NO WAY - I gave $700 for the complete engine and drive line. The diesel outdrive is geared different and built stronger than the gas version and worth a mint. Then I gave $400 to ship it to Texas , total $1100 then $600 to the Phils so now $1700. That diesel sell even broken for THOUSANDS for the motor alone! A good used running one sells for $8000 to $11000 for the MOTOR ALONE. A new one is about $30000 for a new one MOTOR ONLY.
