I've been wanting to start trying to catch a sea trout from the sea, on the fly, for the last couple of seasons now, and channels such as The Angling Front really inspire you to have a go. Time-wise it has proved tricky to fit it in and often, once the brown trout season starts I'm heading out to the lochs on the occasions I have had time to fish.
This video is from a really short half hour I had for a speculative cast as I was working at a renovation of an old boat house directly on the shore and had time to have a go. So I'm figuring this is maybe the beginning of another fishing obsession!! Despite not catching anything, I really enjoyed having a go, maybe the weather helped but I'm keen to try to have a least another few goes over May if possible.
I hope you enjoy the video and please feel free to leave me any comments or advice if you want. Thanks as always to subscribers as well as people that take time to watch and like the videos. It's always much appreciated.
Tackle | 6/7 weight 9' 6" rod, ghost tip fly line
Flies | Cats whisker variant on the point and a teal blue & silver on a dropper

Hi there, i do quite a lot of sea trout fishing and I would like to share some tips with fellow highlander 😃I prefer to fish low water up or big tides full water so all the weeds are under water and fish over them. Also look for places where water moves a bit, some narrows are usually good. Sand eel imitation are my favourite in summer, they can be big don’t be afraid. Some flies I have are 110mm or even longer same like real sand eels are😃 In spring I use shrimp imitation, pink and red mostly. Also once you get to the shore, before you step in the water cast in a couple times cos they can be right before you in the shallow. I’ve had some nice ones from water right before my feet😃 Well that’s the basic I can tell you now. Just keep trying and you’ll get some for sure 😃 Tight lines mate! 🎣

This is great advice, thanks for watching and taking the time to outline those tips for me, it really is appreciated all the pointers folk are willing to share. I had a quick go for 2 hrs yesterday at low water in a place I’ve never tried. First place I had seals shadowing me so I kept moving to a burn mouth/shallows where I guessed fish may have moved/been chased into, i actually saw at least one fish moving in the mouth but i maybe spooked it or my presentation was crap or was just preoccupied with the two seals/not feeding. They were proper thrashing at me at one point 😆 but at least i saw a fish, i got my location right just didn’t tempt it or just scared it off - so exposed out on the estuary / loch head flats. I normally do approach hill lochs as you say - fish the near water first so will try to remember that in the sea. I have at least two/three spots near narrows that i intend to try at some point, two are a bit closer to home. I fished a sandeel pattern and a soldier palmer that a subscriber and long time advice giver kindly sent me this week. Blown away by the kindness, I’m confident I’ll eventually find a taking fish, but tbh I’m really enjoying the whole novelty/challenge and trying something out of my comfort zone. Thanks again and tight lines 👍

Magic, it's very addictive buddy! First time out I had 2, one at 3.5lbs, the other at 2ish, within 8 minutes of each other, this us easy I thought 😂 That looks good ground, boulders and bladder wrack, it seems to be dependant on the area whether ebb or flow tide is best. Tight lines sir.

Many thanks for the advice 👍 that must have been some debut you had with those fish, fantastic. I do a lot of sea trout fishing later summer once fish start looking to run, but I’ve been trying to have a go in the sea and honestly i know it will be very hard, and not always a great weather day like in the video, but i really enjoyed it. Hopefully i’ll get out again soon, thanks again and good luck in your own fishing.

Cheers, thanks for watching mate. Yes, it’s one of the many places I’ve thought might be a good place to try, having watched people like yourself on YT, it ticks a few of the boxes you and others usually suggest are good indicators/starting points. Cheers for the advice you share and I’ll keep trying when I can and know it will take a fair bit of legwork but that’s fine, I really enjoyed the unknown of it tbh.

Well done sir, brave step uploading a blank but that reflects reality. Looks like that place could have some serious potential! Michael (angling front) always recommends fishing near freshwater burns. Doing a bit myself in 2 weeks 👍

Ha, I’ve a few blank videos on here this isn’t the first! 😆 i thought this was a free hit tbh, it was so nice a day I thought i’ll make video, maybe some will like the views even if no fish. But yeah, I really enjoyed it so definitely going to keep trying and in a diary sense it’ll be good for me to look back on, it may take me quite a lot of goes to find a fish. My next video has plenty of fishy action from Loch Fada so I’ll be trying to edit that to get it out maybe not next week but the week after. Wishing you good luck for your Scotland trip 👍

Thanks James, hope you get to try for a sea trout at some point, definitely an addictive species. I do fish a fair bit for them later summer when they run our spate rivers & the numbers do vary quite a bit due to the pressures migratory fish experience, but usually there are some about if you can time it right. Great flies, teal blue & silver, peter ross singles and wee doubles are my go to flies though I do use a stoats tail too, often for salmon in lower water. I’ve had grilse on both the TBS & peter ross, brownies too, all round excellent flies. I like a blue & silver bumble too, slightly different but it has all those trigger colours. Thanks again for the help and all the best

Hey Matt! Great to see you having a go at what can be a difficult sport. I would concentrate on areas where streams enter the sea first and then try over sand where they may be feeding on sand eels. Spend some time when there is little or no wind and look for signs of feeding fish. From June onwards you might come across shoals of baitfish such as sprats or small herring fry. Last year I came across shoals of herring fry where it was clear that there were larger fish predating on them. I fish a two fly cast with a fluorescent red soldier palmer on a dropper and a white sand eel pattern made from white marabou, a pinch of uv flash over and a white body with eyes and coated with resin. Absolutely deadly. I caught around 25 - 30 sea trout of between 3/4 lb and two pounds. High tide is never any good, nor is full ebb. There needs to be tidal movement and an ebbing tide is every bit as good as a flowing tide. The best time of the.year is June to October. Any earlier and you tend to pick up kelts or mending fish. Great to see you having a go Matt. PS don’t forget to give the sandy beaches a go. If there are sand eels there you may be in with a chance! All the best.

Now then Mike, thank you for the encouragement and all the great advice you have shared. l’ll have to look into those types of flies you mention, they obviously work well given all the sport you’ve had up there. I did really enjoy it the other day, I was going to go to a bay tonight but I’ve been busy with my ongoing shed build all day so too knackered. It’s a dark sand bay, the slight drawback is it doesn’t have an obvious burn though there is some fresh water run off, though hardly even burns. I’ve seen fish chasing bait fish there before and you see some sandeels and small flatfish. It’s worth a go, i have quite a few spots in mind and if time I’ll hopefully get out again soon for a go. Thanks again really kind of you to offer all that advice 👍

Mike - meant to ask, what sort of size hook are these lures you use if you don’t mind me asking? I know the lure will roughly represent the baitfish size, just looking online and some and they seem quite large 😆 there are some size 6 epoxy minnow patterns with a marabou tail that look similar to your description and worth a go.
