Sea Turtle Rescue: Ingested Fishing Line

This video shows the detrimental effects of so-called ghost fishing gear on marine animals.

The olive ridley female seen in this video was found while nesting and had ingested a fishing line (possibly with a hook). The line was still sticking out of her mouth. Unfortunately, we were not able to see and remove the hook, so we only cut off the protruding piece of fishing line, as recommended by sea turtle experts.
Interactions with discarded fishing gear (aka ghost fishing gear) are very frequently observed in sea turtles.

Given our knowledge of the scarcity of sea turtle rehab facilities and lack of expert care for injured sea turtles in Costa Rica, the decision we are usually facing is either leaving the animal as is or trying to help as much as we can by removing obstructing objects.
As biologists, we don't actively seek out injured wildlife, but our research happens to position us at the front-lines of reality looking at the detrimental effects of human impact on wildlife.

"Ghost gear are fishing nets and lines that have been left or lost in the ocean by fishermen. These nets, often nearly invisible in the dim light, can be left tangled on a rocky reef or drifting in the open sea. They can entangle fish, dolphins, sea turtles, sharks, dugongs, crocodiles, seabirds, crabs, and other creatures, including the occasional human diver. It is lucky to have some people rescue the turtles. The poor turtles were abused by nets and environment pollution. I am happy to see these abused animals received helps.

I've seen turtle rescue groups pull net, and long pieces of rope type material from a turtle. One piece was probably 5 or 6 feet long. Seen it pulled from the other end of turtles as well. Let's hope that turtle was able to pass that on its own 🥺. 🌞

Это вы идиоты, сидите и осуждаете их, они хоть что то делают. Биологи в таких ситуациях рекомендуют не тянуть за верёвку, так как там может быть рыболовный крюк. Или верёвка просто может повредить внутренности при вытягивании.

it is very simple to critizise, but after sleeping a night about this video, I have to make a comment. If a stick is in the mouth of a turtle, the animal fights against this object. There is no chance to remove the line. A line like this is very difficult, because knots could have been created in the stomack and make it impossible to remove the line. We have to keep this in consideration! It would have been better to lay the turtle on its back that the neck could be straight and pull carfully the line. In my opinion just cutting the line could be the death of this turtle. I want to use these lines also thank you for helping creatures. Too many insane people use the nature and the sea as a trash can! Terrible!

It's a fish line...with a HOOK. Any attempt of pulling it out would rip up the insides of the turtle. Cutting at least limits the chance of the string getting stuck somewhere when the turtle is moving. Only safe way of removing it is surgery.
