This is all actually happening from Sweet Pea's perspective (played by Abbie Cornish).. and Babydoll (Emily Browning) is a figment of her imagination, a guardian angel. She lived with her sister & stepfather who was physically & sexually abusive. He also killed their mother. One day as her stepfather is being abusive towards her sister 'Babydoll' tries to kill him but accidentally kills her sister instead. She goes into shock. He sends her to a mental asylum. The asylum is depressing & alienating filled with other girls who are just as broken as her. The staff are mainly men and they're abusive towards the girls. To cope with the everything going on Babydoll creates two alternate fantasies: The brothel & the warrior world. In the brothel world she is being objectified and abused and in the fantasy warrior world she takes control, she's incredibly tough & stoic and uses her sexuality as a weapon. She literally fights her demons. The women she meets in the asylum become different parts of her personality & together they form a plan to escape the brothel and conquer the battle world. All is going great until the plan to escape is jeopardised when the abusers discover their motives & as a result most of girls are murdered leaving only Babydoll & Sweet Pea. Even Sweet Pea's sister Rocket is a manifestation of her real sister & the guilt she felt when she couldn't save her from dying. Babydoll sacrifices herself (her body) by staying behind at the asylum so that Sweet Pea can escape (mentally). In the real world Baby Doll aka Sweet Pea is being lobotomised at the institution, & as a way of coping she instanlty retreats into her fantasy world. This coping mechanism is closely linked to being raped as well. It ends with Baby doll appearing empty, ghostly & mentally not here. But the last image we see is of Sweet Pea taking the bus to "paradise" symbolising her divine escape from reality & her new found inner peace.

It was a great movie. It wasn't supposed to be a straight up action fantasy film. It was an escape from the mental institution where she was being molested and she tried to rationalize it with herself being in a brothel and then trying to come to grips with some kind of empowerment in an environment where she had some control of her situation, hence the action scenes.
@tnargtnarud5 жыл бұрын
Robert Scythe You’re giving the director and the film too much credit for their lack of a story or actual plot reasoning behind what we’re watching. Why even have two fantasy worlds if this fantasy fight doesn’t actually matter to what is happening in the brothel to the asylum? What is the explanation of the old man telling Babydoll what items she needed? Where did she find this in the brothel world? Or you know, the ACTUAL reality she was in? Plot details like this is important because without it these fight scenes all seem pointless and has no actual weight to the story. The film would’ve been better having set in the asylum with the brothel plot points mixed in, and thus the fighting scenes be actually important. Please explain the ending to me as well. Please try
@RobertScythe5 жыл бұрын
@@tnargtnarud The film starts with a shot of a stage and entering into it as it becomes the movie, already offering its multi-layer storytelling immediately, with Sweet Pea narrating and identifying Babydoll as a (her) guardian angel. When Babydoll is in the asylum she notices the items that she will need to escape, though she may not know it yet (since you don't remember this you may have to see it again since each item has a close up camera shot on it). The brothel fantasy is where she can interact with her reality but distance herself from what is going on in the asylum plus she knows that she will be subjected to a lobotomy. Meanwhile she is being molested by Blue and brings up a further fantasy that will allow her some control of her situation and her mind formulates the plan to be free (the wiseman being the manifestation and showing her what she needs) through a classic 'fantasy story quest'. But she fails at this and has decided to 'free' herself (she never mentions 'escape') by accepting the lobotomy and helping Sweet Pea to escape as a way to make up for killing her own sister but it is another fantasy since the wiseman and the boy are in it and she had failed after all. There is another great theory that Sweet Pea is the main character and this is her fantasy (she also loses her sister) since she is the narrator and in one scene she states "I am the star of the show", plus consider that the window behind Sweet Pea on the stage and the one in the lobotomy room are the same making this a possibility (and, also a failure). Well done. Edit: The story is basically her way of fighting, lamenting over, coping with and finally accepting the inevitable lobotomy.

I still love this movie. People keep saying it was a bad movie but maybe they just had different taste and opinion. While I love movies with metaphors, it made me thinks a lot. What I saw was a girl with schizophrenia dealing with her reality. Music that she first heard in the asylum brought her to another place. She didn't actually dancing. That part was in her "world". And in that "world" there's another "world" when she dance with music. It's the way she cope with reality. Because there's no longer reality for her. Only dreams within dreams. She was the most crazies of them all. When the doctor lobotomize her, it was the moment she actually be free from her dark "worlds". And she will no longer feel hurt. But that just my opinion.
