Love the video. I started running the Seachem Tidal's five months ago (3 so far) and are gradually using them to replace my other HOB's with 3 to go. I absolutely love them and the only thing I do differently is put a prefilter sponge on the intake tube.

Yeah I should use pre-filters, I'm forever pulling the likes of Bristlenose fry and Gobies out of the filter. I just figure the draw of the water into the intake isn't so strong they can't swim away from it and with the surface skimmer part if they want to make their way inside they will anyway. I just tip them back into the tank when I'm doing my maintenance and they're usually fine. I'm with you but, great filters so they are.

Funny that this video came up when I was searching Tidal enhancements. I just order the same pads and Bio Max last night and then see this. I picked up a used Tidal 110 for 20 bucks and figured I was going to swap out a AC 110 that keeps stopping. Their customer service wants me to cut the cord and send them a picture and they will send me out a replacement. So I figured lets use it as I have it. My concern was the pads and flow restriction and I can see not an issue so I am glad I caught this video! I am going to enlarge the holes on the bottom of the basket to increase the water volume into the media. Tank looks great.

Thanks for the review and all the great responses. This answered/solved most of the questions/problems I've had after setting up my tidal 55. One big question remains...the lack of a prefilter; it's even hard to fit one over that long and wide intake. Ideas? In my 20L the intake almost hits the substrate. Update: I cut out a hole on a block of large pore sponge to fit over the main intake and took a thin piece of that same sponge and tucked it into the skimmer grate slots to hold it in place so food and large debris doesn't get sucked in and quickly clog the filter. This is working well.
@DanielKeepingFish5 жыл бұрын
Yeah I don't know why they still haven't addressed that. Perhaps they assume if folk are happy with the surface skimmer they don't want a pre-filter, I don't know. Anyway I was able to find one to get around it in an lfs but it was pure luck. It wasn't one of the main brands and I'm going to struggle to remember who made it but I would certainly ask in at you local fish stores. Sometimes they have wee bits to solve issues like this. Alternatively you can wrap some filter foam around it and secure it in place with cable ties. If it is in sight and you don't want to use table ties you can use fishing line which is a bit more fiddly but you can hold it in place with a rubber band, secure the fishing line in place then remove the bands. Hope those ideas help.

What's your opinion of the bypass? I've got a 75 and as you know, there's that big rectangular window at the front of the basket. A decent amount of tank water flows through that window and back into the tank, unfiltered. Also, even at 50% flow, water flows over the back of the basket and flows back into the tank, unfiltered. @etyrnal3 жыл бұрын
@@DanielKeepingFish these filters have a built-in feature that allows bypass when the media provides too much resistance to the water flow. If you load it up with a bunch of very fine sponges water is going to take the path of least resistance, so if the water can't flow through the media easily, it will go to bypass route. It's not a canister filter.
@etyrnal3 жыл бұрын
@@DanielKeepingFish they were intentionally designed to this way. The fish in the tank needs a water movement and the liquid gas extreme, if the filters get to Clyde's, this movement of water would slow down or stop. They set it up so that if the media allows the water to flow through, then that is the path it takes. But if the media is providing too much resistance for the water to easily flow through, the water goes up and around the outside of the media basket and flows over the top of it and out the spillway.

May I also know which is better sponge filter or air filter and why so? I read a website saying sponge filter is very good for biological purpose (meaning sucking up the debris from my bare bottom tank, am I right but bad at mechanical or chemical filtration because you can't put in any filter media) and corner filter are better at mechanical or chemical filtration as you can place in your own filter media but not so good at biological filtration) so which is true.And u r right. Kfc Potato oh I see, that that's quite a tall tank you're working with there then. An air filter is basically one the is operated by air rather than electricity. So a sponge filter would be a version of that only entirely sponge, no other compartments. The one is the links I sent you were just examples but I think they would be too small for your purposes. Yes they are great for biological filtration. That refers to their ability to house populations of the bacteria that break down ammonia into nitrite and nitrite into nitrate. They are not great at mechanical filtration (removing or moving waste so they would not move waste towards the intake of your Tidal. Without knowing exactly your set up I'm thinking would may be better with an internal filter then that you could place in the bottom corner of your aquarium to catch waste and also move water around for you. @DanielKeepingFish6 жыл бұрын
Robert Fletcher it depends where they come from. I use a lot of the tissue culture plants nowadays so you're pretty much guaranteed they are going to be okay. If it's people I know that have given me plants I don't worry about them too much especially if I've seen their tanks a few times. Plants from others I don't bleach dip no although I see no reason that it wouldn't work and be quite safe as long as you rinse them properly. You could also leave them in a bucket of Prime and water for a day for that extra bit of security that all the bleach is away. I have the luxury of a spare tank or two I can put new plants in though so I can quarantine them same as you would with fish. Then I can watch them for a while and make sure I'm happy with them before adding them to their destination tank. For one thing not every hitch hiker is undesireable. If I got plants that ended up having a type of Ramshorn snail that I didn't already have for example I'd probably be delighted.

Oh, Haha, I got you now. The almond leaves, what a wally. That's cool too. Let me know what you think of them please.

I tried to get you the link but it shows my address when I click on it again. Sure that's just because my phone knows it's me but just in case I don't want to post it here. Just go on Amazon and type in "filter pads." For me the pads were on the third or fourth page bud.

Ordered I was looking at merchants that sell reticulated foam but a bit costly.

Robert Fletcher that's why I always say to cut them from the edge so you get lots of uses out of each pad. Each of those pads will easily do a canister and three or four maybe even five HOBs assuming you only use one layer in each. When you look at it like that you can kind of justify the price.

If you buy a 75 gal tank... the tidal 55 wont fit over the plastic rim of the 75 gal tank like it fits on / over the 55 gal tank.. Why the hell did they do this ?... i cant use the 2 tidal 55,s now on my 75 without having to cut the rim... BASTARDS.

Jovanni Alba I got them from Amazon UK bud. Just search "aquarium filter pads" and they were on the third or fourth page for me on my phone. Would imagine most lfs sell them too but I am thirty miles to my nearest store. I prefer to support local fish stores but I can't always free myself up for half a day for the journey there and back so it's handy for me that Amazon deliver to my door.

Ken Rosecrans I got the 75 from an lfs and the 55 from Santa. I had sent Santa the link in my letter to him and he must have judged me to have been a good little boy last year. It's not where I got mine but I just checked Amazon UK who have them at decent prices.

There is no use with all the customization, if you don't seal the big hole in the white tray in the front.

Claudio Dean yes they were in a bucket of tank water till I needed to get them out. I wouldn't normally take so long about it either but it was necessary in order to make the video you see. Thanks for mentioning it though.
