I have the same 2000XP and it made this awful sound as well. I was cruising along one day and I lost all forward movement. The engine still runs but it makes an awful metal on metal sound. Can the driveshaft disconnect itself from the engine? I haven’t had the time to look at it yet.

Would be easier to pull pump and driveshaft

If you pull the plump do you need to align everything still or do you only align when you move the engine?
