Seal Entangled In SEAL SKIN

The rescuers are struggling to keep their eyes locked on their targets - the sun is up early and shining right into their eyes. They successfully net two seals with entanglements - but many more might have escaped undetected due to difficult conditions. The first seal has a very tight loop of fishing line around her neck, but she is strong and well nourished, ready to make a full recovery.
The second seal appears to be entangled in.... seal skin! We do not know if it was a piece of her own or another seal's skin, but we have taken samples for genetic testing.
She is strong and on her way to a full recovery. 🦭

The seal says, "I'm here lounging on the beach, but I can't breath very well, then these humans come running after me, I start to protest, then they jump on me and I hear cutting noises. Living in Australia, with our huge length of coastline, I hate to think of the thousands of sea creatures that need our help. I am not sure if we have any organisation doing this work. If one of this group could find time to give a TED talk, that would be a start. And all of us collecting rubbish especially fishing line every time we go to the beach.Every little bit helps. And education is so important. Teach our kids, starting at home. Thanks so much all of you.

Looks like two pieces of thin line a 1/4" apart around her neck wore down into her neck and created the fur necklace. Always interesting, thanks!

Yes, I think you‘re right. Probably, she is a recapture and the team already removed the actual entanglement. The blood supply between the two strands seemed to be cut off and that piece of skin died off.

I agree, likely an entanglement that caused an intact loop of her own skin to become detached. Truly weird, especially given the fact that the entanglement is no longer present (unless it was embedded deep in the wound, with tissue growing over it).

I highly doubt it's her own. The only thing I can think is that another sea lion got eaten and it left that ring floating out in the ocean. The chances of that are crazy tho. Perhaps not as crazy as we thought tho. This whole chasing down and saving entangled animals full time is kind of a new thing. I wonder if well see it again in the coming years.

This is an indication that there were two fine threads of fishing line that cut through and what you removed was what it cut the fishing line is steel below the surface embedded

We have been advised by leading seal specialists that, unless we are able to keep the animal in a sanctuary for recovery, we should avoid putting medicines on the wound. The seal goes straight in the water as soon as we release it, washing off any topical cream. Water resistant sprays may lock in bacteria. The sea water acts as a very effective wound cleaner, and the seals heal remarkably fast. We do see recaptures every single day out there and they live a perfectly normal seal life.

I think the strip of her skin is loose because of two thin fishing line entanglements have cut the skin in circular style and it has died. I hope you checked the wound carefully from deep too to make sure the line is not covered by new tissue. Hopefully she is someone you already saved and the skin was just ready dead to get loose. I wish you could use some safe paint to mark a little dot on the ones you rescued. Thank you for what you do.
