Seal Rescue (Near Fail)

A normal day for our Non Profit Organisation Ocean Conservation Namibia (OCN) turned funny when Namib_Naude needed several attempts to catch a young Cape Fur Seal entangled in a blue piece of plastic.
Naude and Antoine saw this seal in the middle of hundreds of other seals at Pelican Point (close to Walvis Bay and Swakopmund). He was far away and they did not realise how big and fast he would be. Normally a small seal does not require our custom build seal catching net, but the OCN team misjudged his size. When Naude FINALLY managed to catch him, he asked Tony to quickly fetch the net and together they cut him lose from his entanglement. This blue piece of plastic was likely used as a wrapping for water bottles, it ended up as plastic pollution and ocean rubbish. 🦭

Thank you so much, it must have been very interesting and heart breaking at the same time. We once had a seal stuck in a toilet seat. There is really no limit to what you can find in the ocean. People are careless and either unaware of or numb to the consequences of their actions.

namib_naude it’s so sad to see these precious seals suffering & dying because of us. Also, the many different sea life like sea turtles being classified as threatened or endangered species. I will definitely encourage ppl/friends to learn about it and hopefully schools will assign students to write a paper, their research will open their eyes and hearts. I know plastics are a huge problem. I also realize they are used for everything and probably aren't going away. I lack understanding as to why they are dumped in the ocean and aren't made to break down. I have some learning to do.

What made this capture difficult was that the seal whipped his head around, readying for a striking bite, every time you came near enough to grab the seal. He was a clever bugger!! "Grab me? I bite you!"

Yes! He was feisty! Also - we totally underestimated his size. We spotted him from far away, we thought he is a little baby seal. We were very wrong!

He hops ! As you are about to grab him his instinct kicks in and he jumps with his hind flippers giving him that additional burst of energy. 😂Never noticed that move before.
