Seal Rescued From Giant Hook

Seal patrol from our kayaks have worked very well lately, today is no difference. It is a very successful rescue run with three saved seals in one go. Most of them are quick and easy rescues, but the little pup with a treble hook in his mouth needed the help of all three dedicated and experienced OCN rescuers to be freed. We do not see treble hooks often. They have three points instead of only one, and each of them is painfully embedded in the seal's lip. The seal is a very good patient and allows the rescuers to do their work in spite of the pain the rescue must have caused him. Hook entanglements are terrible and painful, but the animals recover very quickly once the foreign object is removed. 🦭

There was one other time (that I remember) when they got a hook out of the mouth from a female adult seal & the guys commented "what a good patient" she was & she seemed to understand what they were doing. It's kinda cool/hopeful to think maybe some of the seals do understand OCN are the good guys just coming to help. That little man was a total champ and the guys were compassionate & efficient as always.

Yeah I'm wondering if some of these seals have witnessed the OCN crew doing rescues before, and they at some level know that they're only there to help. It seems like there's an internal dialogue they're having, torn between "hmmm it would seem they are helping me" and the natural impulse to run away when restrained for fear of becoming the bigger creature's (Naude looks hungry sometimes) meal.

Puppie with the hook was only a tiny little bit nervous and really seemed to know what was up! Maybe he'd seen rescues before and knew he was in the right spot to get help. I kept watching his eyes follow each person, like a kid who suddenly has multiple doctors who are speaking another language but still knows they mean no harm...

Adults talking to children and animals in a higher pitch can supposedly be interpreted as nurturing, non-threatening. Obviously, many seals clearly don't respond to Antoine like the little one with the hook but, perhaps this time it was effective (in addition to the calm demeanor of Naude and Wally). Unlike almost all of the OCN videos I've watched (too many to count), wherein the eyes of the rescued seal are black and clearly angry, it's fascinating to witness the change here. Wariness, confusion....but acceptance and trust. So sweet. :::sniff::: OCN is beyond awesome! :)

Yea I am convinced because these guys are so regular out there the seals will learn when they got something attached to them they will just start staying around for the humans to show up. This guy just seemed to turn to them and say Help me! Because if they would have had to use the net that would have been really painful for the seal.

Healing a sprain & passing the time with animal videos (as one does) when I discovered this. I’m obsessed. What a wonderful way to teach so many important lessons on how our species impacts others. It’s shocking and difficult to watch but also heartwarming how this team cares and reverses some of the harm. And what an inspiring “every-day-hero” job, filled with constant challenge, teamwork, serious cardio, sunshine and ocean air [btw…walking on sand is a workout but to run at top speed carrying equipment; holy “real seal team” Batman!]. I got the feeling that that little seal has encountered the OCN team before and knew you were only there to help. That is the only explanation for its' calm demeanor, especially working so closely to its' only means of defense and there not being a single attempt at trying to bite any of you. Probably not. They sometimes stop fighting the rescuers out of shock. They do seem to feel relief once a tight entanglement has been cut, they can breathe again, and that feeling might distract them. Rescues are stressful for an already stressed out animal, but unfortunately there is no better way. Our pleasure 😊 Thank you very much for the support 🙏
