Tiny Baby Seal Stuck Between Big Rocks

Not one of our classic entanglements, but definitely a seal rescue: a tiny seal pup slipped between the rocks at Cape Cross, unable to get himself out of there. We have different theories how he got into that situation, but we know with absolute certainty that he was not able to free himself. Luckily the OCN team was around, and they could wiggle him out of the whole. The ordeal took a few minutes, but in the end the pup was rescued and he immediately went looking for his mom. 🦭

The fact that they even got near his mouth with his hands and he didn’t bite says a lot. He basically gave up on everything. He knew that, even if they were predators, he couldn’t do anything and just accepted it.

The relief after being rescued frim this slow agonising death are beyond words. Imagine trapped, unable to move, hungry and punished by elements plus biting insects. Bless you all for finding and rescuing this little baby seal. Great work guys.

Great job! The problem with animals getting trapped is that they often swell up when struggling to get free, which is why you wonder how they got into that position in the first place when it's so hard to get them out again.

Oh if you ever get a finger or an arm or something, stuck in a ring/hole/pipe/tube/etc. make sure to hold the item úp and the fingers/arm too, Many people point their hand *down* and hope that it helps with the item falling off, but it just makes the blood stream towards the fingertip. Put the finger/arm up in the air, the item too and either put olive-oil on there (careful, it can make the ring slippery too and that makes things more difficult) or use the technique with the rope (twisting it around the finger and making the finger thinner this way, it's online.) And keep calm, if it's your finger (or tell the person to keep calm.) That way, the ring or tube or item will fall off the quickest.

Another issue is many animals have a strong instinct to try to run forwards if they're scared, so backing out sometimes doesn't even occur to them. And with seals I'm not sure how good they physically are at moving backwards - everything in their body seems designed to go forwards.

That poor baby and he must be terrified! I hope he wasn’t stuck there for a long time and hope he can find his Mom…he’s adorable and I just wanna cuddle him so he’ll know he’s safe. I know people don’t carry cooking oil around in their back pockets but pouring oil all over the pup’s neck area would make him slide out much easier. *_Fascinating bit of Baby Seal info: that they can go for DAYS, alone and unfed, while their mother is foraging offshore._* Remarkable; something that I would never have thought possible. With OTHERS here, I hope for the best regarding its REUNION with its mother; at which time the little one will have an amazing story to tell, about which his mother may justifiably be just a bit skeptical. Animals are generally good at avoiding bad experiences. There are actually certain moths that have evolved to taste bad so that after eating them bats will avoid them in the future because of the bad memory - it doesnt save the first moth but it does save many more!

I’m traumatized after seeing this. The poor puppy, lying there so calm just waiting, maybe hopping for help. It seemed dazed after, going back towards the rocks. Can you imagine? That was an extremely happy ending for that little pup, actually it is with your kind hearts that thousands of seals live to swim and fish another day.. I used to watch the occasional video of your rescue work in between videos of my passion or hobby, antique woodworking tools. Now I watch videos of seal rescues most evenings. I would like to hear you all have incomes to match some of the sportswomen and men, but alas life doesn’t reward true heroes. Thank you for all the rescues that you do. I admire your dedication to saving these seals. If you can get Dawn dish soap, I think you should add it to your toolkit in the truck. We use it in the USA on creatures who have been in oil disasters to clean them. It’s touted as safe for the animals & environment. We also use it at home as a lubricant when trying to snake wires through tricky plastic/rubber tubing. Using Dawn around the baby’s neck would have also help it slide against the rocks. Cheers to the whole team on this glorious rescue.

Dawn soap is also toxic to wildlife, especially the aquatic community, because it poisons the water.

​@@webdev217The environment is resilient. No way a half bottle or even a full bottle of dish soap to help that baby seal would destroy that area of beach in any way. You would need an entire oil tanker of dish oil to do any damage to a place that big. Use the dishwasher and make job easier for you and animal that is stuck. That's all.
