Seal Rescued from Heavy Hook

It is easy to imagine the seal's pain when the weighted fishing hook in its mouth swings from side to side, ripping into his lip more and more every time it bounces around. The hook was intended to catch snoek, but like so many others, it ended up in the ocean instead, ready to hurt animals.
The rescuers from Ocean Conservation Namibia have dealt with an unprecedented amount of hooks this year and they have been able to refine their rescue system. They restrain the animal and Naude cuts the tip of the hook with a bolt cutter. The hook can easily be pulled out now and the rescuers release the seal. They go straight for the next rescue, a big seal bull with a big cut around his neck. 🦭

@@peatmoss4415 What a crass comment. Every rescue the Team do is to remove man made stuff, you don't see seals tied up in sea weed or a prickly thorn bush rapped around their faces! @@ukbusman I have made this comment before here and the Ocean team agreed with me!! How about those cookies? And another point is I am certified SCUBA and have swum with seals! I bet you have NOT right? They swim to show off their agility and I have held up my arms in a circle and they swim through them. They do that in sea grass but when they encounter junk they don't realize it will get stuck around their necks. I suggest you pull your panties out of the bunch they are in and grow up.

Please don't blame yourselves when you find an entangled seal dead on the beach. You can't be there 24/7 to free all of them. Just take comfort in the fact that this year alone, 600 seals are alive that would not have been without your intervention. Thank you for caring so much and saving as many as you have. ❤🦭

You've gained so much experience, you can now do rescues in very short time and causing minimal stress to the seals. The hook and line removals went smoothly because of it (and your new tools!). I'm happy to hear the pup survival rate is much higher this year. As the poor dead seal at the end presumably died at sea, it one was out of your reach to help but of course it made you sad anyway. Always remember though, you do so much good, you save so many lives. Thank you all, dedicated OCN team members.

So glad to see the new Hook-In-The-Mouth paraphernalia! Sorry to see it in action. I'm a little squeamish with the hook ones, which is _terribly_ selfish of me to say. I mean, at least i'm human and would have a clue i was being helped. But i have noticed - and maybe it's my imagination - but some of them don't seem to be putting up the fights so much. Not that it's gotten easy! But a year or more into it, i wonder if they aren't learning that *_you_* aren't predators. Maybe they've started seeing you as The Cleaner Wrasses for Seals. But they'd need to confine that idea to just your team.

15,000 lost pups, how very sad. You guys do an amazing job. It's just terrible that this condition exists but so glad you are there to help these deserving seals.

So grateful for all you do. I’ve always picked up trash wherever I go. I notice string, fishing line at the local lake, pieces of rope. I’ve become more aware of the smaller,”less harmful “ pieces thanks to seeing your videos. You are heros for these seals!!

Thank you for showing us that not all the seals get rescued. It helps us all to remember how important this work is and how important it is not to further pollute the oceans.

Thank goodness for how much easier this one went than others with hooks in their mouths. These poor seals are so fortunate to have you guys looking out for them. No doubt God will bless you all abundantly for your kindness to His creatures. ♥

New tools, new techniques, you guys just keep getting better and better. So proud of all the team has acomplished this year. It's always heartbreaking to see ones that didn't make it, but it makes your efforts so much more profound to know just how many you all have saved from the same fate. Whenever the team comes across a desceaced one, I'm reminded of an old vid of of Naude and Dillon, where he asks if Naude will still cut off the entanglement. It wasn't shown this time, but my heart hopes that you still cut it off.

This video went from elation to sadness. The update on seal deaths at the end was welcomed and although extremely sad, some comfort must be taken that deaths are not as bad as previous years.

Death by 1,000 cuts... Those single fishing lines are soooo horrible!!! Good thing the Salt Water Pharmacy is open 24-7!!! Even though I'm watching these videos way after the fact, they still fill me with so much emotion!! I know the seals are going to be rescued, but watching them suffering before hand, really is a gut-punch!! That poor seal with the fish hook in its lip was making me shudder!!! Seeing that dead seal from the fishing line made my eyes well with tears. Wow....that was a very difficult day at the office!!! That job is certainly not for the faint of heart!! It's tough physically and mentally for sure! My deepest, heartfelt thanks to the Seal Whisperers and all those behind the scenes for making it happen. Kudos for the makers of the new tools!! A big thank you to them as well!!!

You guys do wonderful work in saving as many as you do , I would have to say the reckless fishers are to blame mostly for these incidents , the global temps have been rising since the last ice age naturally and thankfully.
