Activists Naude and Antoine from Ocean Conservation Namibia take you behind the scenes on a typical morning out on patrol at Pelican Point Namibia. On this morning they caught and disentangled 4 Cape Fur Seals, and missed 1. They also show you what else a typical day searching for entangled animals entails. 🦭

These videos are such a testament to the hard work you guys put in simply for the reward of helping another living being. Scanning, reporting, cataloging, running, driving, focusing, spending time, money, energy and all the care that goes into saving lives of animals that mostly don't understand you are helping them. I wish we could somehow identify the boats and ships dumping their trash and fine them. Like those packing straps if that had to be stamped with place of origin it would help find out some of it. I know the fishing boats just consider the seals as competition for the fish and they want them dead. You scare the pee out of them, pretty funny!

Well, I can't believe your video footage is such high quality- through running, dodging seal teeth, hanging off of a moving vehicle, holding your go pro with your mouth, weather, seal hugs and getting wee'd on by terrified seal pups! Is there anything you don't do? I have seen mylar balloons floating out in the open ocean- sea turtles were trying to eat them- we pulled them out of course. Sea turtles are notorious for eating plastic and unusual items that attract their attention. Do young seals eat trash sometimes like sea turtles? 🧡

No one ever says, “To celebrate this occasion, we are going to choke some seals with ribbons.”, but that is what sometimes happens. We need to replace balloon releases with something more eco-friendly.

Awesome job as always! So, I've been thinking and doing a bit o' research, according to Wikipedia tourism makes up 14.5% of Namibia's GDP, and the country is famous for its wildlife and ecotourism. So, one must assume that is something the administration would want to protect. Now, if say 178K people wrote the government in the country a mail, asking them to fund your project, would it have the desired effect? I mean, if your fairly small team has saved some 360 seals this year alone, and we're only in August, imagine what you could do if you had more people, more cars and more nets. With a bit of luck, no seal would elude you for long enough to sustain any painful injuries.

More people on the beach does not necessarily mean more seals rescued. It can be counterproductive.

@@OceanConservationNamibia I worry people get enamored with these rescues not realizing the stress to the animal and the danger to the rescuer. One chomp with those sharp teeth and potential for infection could change one's enthusiasm.
