Seal's Head Stuck In Fishing Line Spool

Fishing line spools are tricky. They are very easy to spot because they are often bright and colourful, but they are difficult to remove. The seal likely got himself entangled while playing with this piece of ocean rubbish. It must have either fallen into the ocean by accident, or somebody confused our ocean for rubbish bin, as so often. Once it has slipped over a seal's neck, it will get stuck in the animal's fur, and it cannot come off again without outside help from organisations like OCN.
If an animal dies from this kind of entanglement, the plastic piece will stay in the ocean for decades if not centuries to come and we can only speculate how many more animals it kills before it breaks down into micro and eventually nano plastics. 🦭

I really like to see how you always work together on every rescue. There is no bravado, arguments or one person trying to tell everyone else how it’s going to be done. Every voice is heard and options weighed equally for the best outcome for each seal. So wonderful to see and hear how you decide what to do, on the the spot each time. ✌🏼💜🇨🇦

I'm SO glad you caught her when you did, before there was any damage. That plastic spool was very deceiving ... around her neck it looked like a toy, but when you removed it and held it up, it was horrible and thick ... definitely an ominous death trap. Thank you for going back for her, and thank you for doing what you do SO well! Team OCN is the BEST!

I'm thinking it's not so crazy that you've seen two of these so recently. If I had to guess it was one particular fisherman or one crew with the habit of tossing trash into the water, instead of doing the right thing. Thank you for being there to rescue both of them.
@OceanConservationNamibia

Is the real issue a local group of fishermen, or the endless appetite humans have towards seafood? Most of these entanglements are a direct consequence of fishing, period. Blaming a group of people is just another way to reassure oneself and keep consuming seafood.

@@OceanConservationNamibia I think. Coldtoes was just referring to those couple of seals in particular, while I think your comment was referring to the entire problem. It would be nice though if the fishing industry would agree to not throw trash overboard but also account for all of their fishing lines and netting. There is realistically no way to enforce that but it would be a huge help if it was done voluntarily with 100% participation. Thank you for all of the much needed hard work that you all do!
@myreallife6386

@Sharon that’s a good idea, but would be time consuming and hard to keep records of all the fishing supplies. I wonder who is making the gill nets, can they be stopped? But in the end each person has to wrestle (or not care!) with their own conscience. It’s scary how easy it is to “not see” when the facts are all obvious if we stop to care.

In this case, a "wire saw" is the solution. Thread the line between the seal's neck and the spool and then, with alternating motions, saw through the rigid plastic from the inside out. Inexpensive and lightweight tool that can be kept inside a pocket. As usual, great job (even the seal appreciated)!
