Met a few guys from THE REGIMENT on my first tour of Bosnia in 2004 . Did a few OPs with them as cordon troops doing soft knock operations around Pale and Sarajevo . They are very down to earth and will come and chat to you in the canteen .We Fijians in my regiment became very close to Mike as he was one of the survivors of the battle of Mirbat ,Oman 1979 where a very famous Fijian SAS laid his life for his comrades , Queen and country . I remembered when we were in a van doing an OP overlooking a train station near the KOSOVO border .Intel came through that they were smuggling young girls to come and work as prostitutues in EUROPE . The guy who was running the circus was wanted for war crimes .we sat in the van for 3 weeks tops only coming out to wee and have a shitter . Mike was telling us some of his stuff and his first trip to Fiji to meet Labalaba"s family. Best 3 weeks of my military career in that van with Mike . Before we left Bosnia , he came to Banja Luka metal factory to say his goodbye and thank us for our service to his country . Fijians have served the British crown since world war 2 and every calendar year the MOD goes to FIJI and recruit young men and women to enlist in his majesty"s armed forces.

Are you aware that there is a bronze statue of "Laba" inside the Regiments Hereford HQ with a copy of the statue in (I believe) Suva. He is a legend who, in another Unit, would have been awarded the VC for his actions in Mirbat, but so secret was the war in Oman ("helping out" the Sultan) that nothing could be done to draw excessive attention to what was going on there, but he was "Mentioned in Dispatches". Laba's glory was not to be a medal, but the esteem his colleagues will hold him in for evermore, relating his story at Mirbat to future youngsters, like the Australian Aboriginial's oral history tradition around the campfire at night. Fiji is a Commonwealth Nation whose citizens have (as their birthright) the entitlement to apply to join the British Armed Forces, and many continue to do so.

The Removal of a Soviet Attach Chopper MI-8 from enemy territory not in The Soviet Union.. a Chinook was flown in and airlifted the Chopper out.. I had coworkers from Bosnia at my first job. They were some of the most beautiful women I'd ever seen. Interested in their accents, i asked them once why they left home. They said "there was a terrible war..." I asked if it was really quite bad. They gave me a long and penetrating look before saying "It was bad.." God. It was bad.

Actually, truth b told, the correct original term was UDT (under water demolitions) A seal was like there mascot/ symbol whatever. It was just a coincidence that seal works out to SEa Air Land, SEAL... and so UDT became more of an internal naval dept administrative term, and publicly they became known as the Navy SEALs. .... Ed Muller, (RIP , ty for your service ) from Kingston NY and then Dallas Texas was one of the original first Navy spec ops UDT guys immediately following WW2. He was enlisted through the transition from UDT to SEALs as well. He was my father's best friends dad, I had privilege to know him. Amazing man, knew a little bit about literally everything! Many many great stories. ... I'm a better man for knowing him, and his son Gavin i credit directly with a good part of what i know. Learned more from them than all my years in school combined.....
