Seal Wounded By Entanglement

Although it must have been unbelievably sore and painful, we commend the seal for being calm during the whole procedure. It feels totally out of proportion that a few grams of seemingly insignificant plastic can have such a devastating impact. Seals are generally strong and healthy, once the entanglement is removed, the healing starts immediately.

Nice spotting Tony, nice netting Denzil and nice removal Naude. It's bad enough that the poor seal was entangled and to already have a wound, but to have to extract it from the net's zipper is like another horrible rescue. Thanks, OCN heroes, for being there 💙

Hi all! Great team work as always. No matter what is underfoot - sand, mud, stones, sharp shells or old boards, rescuers will still catch the seal and very quickly and carefully remove the deadly debris from its body. We hope that the seal rescued in this video becomes big, wild, and successful in his herd! Thanks guys! Today is April 15, 2024. This amazing channel has 1.91 million subscribers (the number has not changed for 5 days. We are waiting for another 90,000!). Subscribe if you haven't already. By subscribing, liking, commenting, donating and reposting, you help save seals.

Our efforts are just a drop in the bucket compared to the millions of tonnes of trash entering the world's oceans every year. We are unfortunately not solving the problem, but only treating the symptoms of the plastic crisis with our rescues. These videos aim to show the consequences of this pollution and create a change to tackle its roots - namely our addiction to single-use plastics, the lack of law enforcement at sea, and the shortcomings of the recycling industry.

Although I’m sure that it isn’t always possible, Denzil seems to always hold the line before using the hook. Just a little thing, but it prevents the line from digging into the open wound when the line is cut. It’s those little things that show the care that he and the others have towards their patients. Well done gentlemen 🦭😅💙

do the animals ever require medical care -more than the removal of the various entanglements?
@wardygrub

I think OCN have given this a lot of thought. The seals appear to heal up very well, after the entanglement has been removed and the salty water has done it’s job. Xxx
@OceanConservationNamibia
@OceanConservationNamibia 19 күн бұрын
Cape fur seals thrive in their natural habitat, away from humans, and seawater acts as a very efficient wound cleaner. Thus far, we have never encountered a dead fur seal with the scar of a previous entanglement. It might unfortunately happen, but we believe our success rate is very high.
