I've worked for huge multinational corporations and professional service firms. Discrimination against dreads is not accepted. I'm a melanin deficient guy in senior management and will protect anyone's right to expression. Not to say some individuals will not try to make an issue of it, but that should be brought to HR/management's attention. My experience with folks with dreads is they are generally having much more active mind / enthusiasm.

A lot of the videos I've seen talking about locs pretty much dismiss the idea that "only black people can have them"... both from a cultural perspective, historic, sometimes spiritual, but usually just because "if you have hair, you can grow locs, they happen naturally".

Thank you as I write in tears. I'm a Hispanic women light skinned with dreads. Since a child always wanted to have them on me. People LOOK at me and say what have she done to beautiful curly hair. Well that was my culture who still don't understand me. I'm very spiritual my hair feels good filled with great energy. I have suppressed to long. Being someone inside not matching my outside. I'm true to myself and my taino ancestors who had matte hair. It's spiritual not fashionable to me. My spirit is happy and my soul. Don't care if the looks anymore. I am love kind and don't judge. I've always loved locs so much and I've always saw them as a crown or a mane to me people with locs have always looked like beautiful warriors of nature and love they give off strong beautiful vibes and I've always wanted locs and I always worried about people being angry with me for doing it but I realized true spiritualists would be happy for me, I loc my hair because I wanted to stop fighting my hair, it wants to be matted, I want to be closer to nature, I want to pick up on vibrations better, I am a survivor, I am a warrior, i am patient and forgiving, I see that the world is so broken, I know that I am wise beyond my years but I still hold my innocence, im free and I refuse to conform to babylon, I am dedicated and I love everyone I meet, I love mother nature and I thank her everyday for what she does for us, since the very first time I saw someone with locs I've always felt in my heart that this is what locs symbolize and so much more.. I've noticed that the universe has been speaking to me all the time now since I started my locs.. I feel more beautiful with them than I ever did without them. I cry as I write this.

I normally do not comment on videos... Thank you Seala Media for this post! When I was about to graduate from grad school I began to let my hair freeform and lock how it wanted to. My mother (a Christian Jamaican btw) told me that I would not get a job or advance to a Ph.D program wearing my hair that way. So I combed my locks out and straightened my hair for a interview with a doctorate program. I didn't get a spot in the program and felt so lost because I conformed to what my mother thought I should look like in order to be accepted. Well now I have started my locks again but I was getting regular maintenance. Lately I've been thinking that I hate it but I thought that I needed to get them twisted regularly to look nice when I go to work. However, I do not feel the connection I once felt when my hair was just doing it's thing. I want to be able to do my job and let my hair be without the judgment. Maybe I should just stop caring about what others think and whatever happens will be how the most high/universe or my higher self wants it to be. Thank you again.

Locs are a natural, not *necessarily* a hairstyle. It’s not necessarily a tradition, or come from anyone, it’s just the default form of all hair if you let go of vanity. Well said, even the Hindu God Shiva had dread locks, in India they said that Shiva is the God of Ganja, there are many of his followers with very long dread locks in India, they smoke Ganja, are vegetarian, and do yoga. I back-combed mine. Had them for an amazing 5 year journey. 34.5” when the time came to let them go. Lots of good conversations and experiences with people of different color, religion, and/or origin. I also received plenty of nods of understanding and words of respect. I researched before I committed. Then went into it spiritually with watchfulness and curiosity and openness with respect to the traditions that are not my lineage. Mine was an awakening, positive journey in a region with plenty of racial tension and religious conservatism. I plan on doing it again.

My brother, nuff respect. Hear me now. I'm Jamaican, born and bred. Though my upbringing did not take place in JA (migrated to U.S. at an early age), my Jamaican roots reach deep, deep, down into the African, the Arawak and finally God's eternal soul which was made accessible to us through YESHUA, Lord and Savior. Many of your words and experiences resonate quite squarely with mine but there are some that don't which I believe are important enough to address because of my perceived mission here in this realm. I believe I couldn't pass up the opportunity to speak these words with you without shirking my responsibility. First I'd like to say this about the Arawaks whom I believe God uses to communicate with me: Jamaica is located on the Equator in the heart of the Earth which was just one, solid, land mass at its birth (in your mind, push all the land masses of the Earth together and see where Jamaica falls). For this reason, the indigenous people there will be dark skinned. The texture of their hair, their height and weight will also be affected by this relentless sun and continuous rainfall. Ever wonder why Arawaks named it Xaymaca, "Land of wood and water"? Could it be because it was where the vital elements of life (wood represents the material and water represents the spiritual) originated and proliferated? These words had to be said here as I've read much of what many have spoken about the Arawaks/Tainos and never hear these facts mentioned. As for our disagreement: About 22years ago, I, like you,came to Christ. Appx. 3months after I was baptized, I locked up my hair. Why? God spoke clearly to me telling me that I was to be as natural as I was made to be. Since I was a professional at the time, I did my hair neatly non-freeform, what I like to call "cultured locks". Oh, how God spoke to me through my natural hair!!! He took me so many places during that time, one of which was to Samson, in the Bible, to teach me about the power of my locks/cultured locks. I was sold! To this day, I wear my hair the same way and have no intention of wearing it any other way including the way you do. Don't judge me, brother! What God has for you is for you. What He has for me, is for me. Twisting the natural hair to lock it is still natural hair and, I'm a witness, cultured locks does NOT hurt the hair follicles AT ALL and it allows you to still remain your natural self as God made you to be.

I arrived there and listened to the appx. three hour discussion you had with the Yenkunkun Pickibo (This does not sound like a Jamaican derived name) tribe reps and was very highly amused. Second, as it will presently become clear to you that we are not in complete agreement with respect to your thesis/platform, I implore you, in your responding to my challenges to your reasoning, to please try and refrain from personal derogative name-calling and I will respectfully do the same for you. By “personal” I mean, it’s ok to call an argument idiotic, but it’s not ok to call each other an idiot. Now then, in my humble opinion, the so-called American “Aborigine” is a misconstruction and a farce. And the reason for my perception is that these people seek to deny the majority African and European blood running through their veins and identify only with their possibly 2% , if any, Amerindian blood. I find that to be absurd. Y'see, I was born on the island of Jamaica and for many different spiritual reasons, I sincerely believe that I have a real connection to the Arawak people native to that island. I do not know if I have any Amerindian blood in me, in fact, but with all my heart I believe that I do. Nevertheless, I will never take a DNA test to find out because I think it’s irrelevant and furthermore, whether the Synagogue of Satan says I have Amerindian blood or not, I am still Xaymacan and I know I have an Arawak spirit residing inside of me. Despite my connection to my Arawakan spirit, I will never deny the majority African and European blood in me and claim to be Aborigine Xaymacan. I believe the U.S. Lumbee tribe probably got it right as that tribe is comprised of the product of various mix of peoples found only on the American Continent (Amerindian, Africans and Europeans) with the argument that because all these different peoples came together here in the American Continent and reproduced, their offspring, a new and wholly unique tribe, is native to America and is therefore Native American. I feel really sad for the people of the so-called Yenkunkun Pickibo (can’t help but think of the Jamaican vulgar terms “pum pum” and “picki picki head” when I hear this name) tribe for they are in complete denial of the truth about themselves. I hope they wake up soon to realize that they are all Children of the One True and Living God and are therefore entitled to "ownership" (by this I mean one owns whatever one possesses and not the fiction Satan's Synagogue has defined ownership to mean) of any land or living space in all of Creation and not just on the island of what is now called Jamaica.

This is what I needed to hear. I have epilepsy, because of it I developed a severe case of anxiety... it was so bad I would get anxiety when I had something as simple as a doctors appointment or sunday mass (its embarrassing to me when someone sees me haveing a seizure or finds out about my condition, which makes even writing this very hard). I grew my dreadlocks 4 years ago when I first found out about my condition, it helped me cope with my own insecurities. I shaved my head about two months ago because I was tired of being pre-judged and in some cases even looked down upon simply for being white and having locks, most hair salons would refuse to serve me when I wanted to get them tightened. I feel like im missing a limb or a loved one... my hair was not only a social security blanket for me but also a part of me. I immediately regret my decision... now my journey must start from the beginning, I look forward to having my protection and peace of mind back.

I'm white with dreads and for me it's just about not combing my hair and accepting myself and nature for what they are not what we are constantly trying to make it. They formed on their own with a little help from the plants in my garden and they have a deep meaning to me in regards to modern society and where I think people should be and if people don't like that then I don't really want them to be around me anyway. Luckily people who judge others based on appearance tend to stay away from me because of them.

I came across your video as by luck! I let my hair lock on its own since last September and I’m very proud as I feel more rooted. I’m puertorican by the way and I have some ropes for dread lol. Everyone told me to go get it pro done....but I said one day no more brushing, no more styling!! I have always grown my hair since day one (all my toddle pics have me with long hair) and have been growing my beard since my first born son and he’s reaching 22 years old in 1 week! My beard causes ridicule in a secular world! My reasons? Law of the Nazarene! Not to mention I’m an Israelite as well. All I tell people is “if mans beard was supposed to be kept short, then it would stop growing by design just like arm hair, eyebrows and eyelashes stop at a certAin length....by spiritual design!” They NEVER have an answer! My boys from the islands started referring to me as Rasta, but I couldn’t understand the co-relation with that and locks....until now! I’d like to say that I’m a natural man and wish to remain that way! Shit I don’t even take aspirin lol My beard I cut every 3-6 months and my hair I cut bald every 7 years!

Love the video. People compliment my hair all the time, asking how I make it look this way 😂. Crazy thing is I hardly wash it, maybe 5 times a year 😂 don’t judge me, but my hair lets me know when it needs washing. And sometimes I put oils in it but I don’t have a routine for my hair. And no it don’t stink either !

Exact reason i grew mine were because i got tired of braids,hair cuts,flat irons,combing thru my hair daily. For me it's really more of a spiritual and comfort of me being comfortable being myself. I've come to embrace my hair more & more because i'm happy with it in it's natural state even i get it retwisted and sometimes put into two or four braids. I never got the hype of doing it for fashion. I use to be one that clowned people for having them if they didn't look well kept and boom now i have them and i explain to people(the ones who i ise to be like) how clean and healthy they can be if you take good care of your hair.

My partner has locks for 6 years now and I take care of them for him, it is a bonding, loving time for us, every 2 months or so I interlock the base and massage his scalp with essential oils. I have also noticed that my hair changes texture and curl pattern based on the frequency I'm on.

Hello! Very Very good video, I'm from México and i had a bad experience with my school and my dreadlocks, i had dreadlocks for a year, i felt like a real human being and so good with my self, but in my school they told me to cut them or i won't be able to enter to my classes, so i had cut them off, and now im with no hair. I want to share this experience to tell to the people to fight (in the good sense) for your dreadlocks if you are like in my situation, do not give you up, belive me im very sorry for not doing something else to keep them, but i know that they will come back!

I've seen a Yorkshire terrier with matted fur. If a dog that doesn't have type 4a, 4b or 4c hair can have dreads because it's fur is never brushed, then couldn't anyone that doesn't maintain tangle free hair form them?

I am a Caucasian man with naturally occurring dreadlocks. I have had curly hair all my life, my main style was the Afro not by choice but by nature. I left my hair over a period of time while working in the bush and it started to naught up. That was 20 years ago since then I wear my dreadlocks with pride as it represents me naturally. Unfortunately some do not believe I should wear this hairstyle and I have stories told to me by my children how they have been discriminated against because their father wears dreadlocks and he not the right colour to do so. This hurts me and I believe as long as you are representing your true self stand strong. I wear my locks with pride as I am true to myself and I will for as long as I live. I had no idea who Rastafarians were yet until a few years later....I said to myself...this must be how most spiritual people must wear their hair. I had a deep connection to this in this life, because of past life association. My locks touch to the ground now, as I have taken to the Spiritual path at a young age...all the points you have said are right on.
