Always learn sentences or word combinations. Never single words. This is VERY important because not only do words almost never live in isolation, but we can begin understanding grammar intuitively through how words relate to each other.

Love what you are doing - it is so vital we keep the language alive for future generations. One thing I would wish, however: a caption in English as each person is speaking.

I have always wanted to be connected to our canadian indiginous peoples ever since I was a young girl . I can't quite remember what the book I was asked to read but it had a great impactful sense of what those people lived by and I have always loved and admired their own life. As a white girl in canada and who knows why I was brought here but I keep feeling some kind of connection and a desired longing to learn more from the peoples of canada. You and only you can give me a real feeling of how I should be thankful for this life I have .

Native Haida speakers aren’t from canada

@@star4326 I mean, yes but no. In a technical sense, they're spoken in a part of Alaska, which is part of the US, but also Haida Gwaii, which is part of Canada. But if you referring to the land taken from the Haida and a ton of others, yeah I understand that :v

They know how close they are to losing the language. To impress upon the young will be the hardest part of learning the language.

keeping a language alive by "impressing young people" isnt how its done. They'd need to change their place's official language to the Haida language. Bilingualism is somewhat of a myth, cause there are people who can achieve it, but not an entire folk. You can see it in Belgium, where people try to learn both languages, but they are only native to either one of the two main official languages of Belgium. The other one is simply what they learn in School, but not even close to being a "second native tongue" if so to speak. Perhaps I'm cynical, and I really like the sound of the Haida language, but I think the damage the English-speaking people have done by forcing the Haida people to forgot about their culture and language is nearly irreparable.
