Sealed Vs Ported Subwoofers (SVS PB-2000 vs SB-2000)

I own a SVS PB12-NSD in a 13x16 home theater room. Would I benefit from upgrading to a SB 2000 or PB 2000?

a sealed box drops off at 12DB per octave below F3 while a ported box drops off at 24DB per octave below F3 OR its tuning frequency. a sealed box with an F3 of 40HZ will have much more low end than a ported box with an F# of 40HZ.

Interesting point about the aspergers and how it affects your listening experience. I also find sealed is overall brilliant but there is something about it that makes me feel tense. A well designed ported box just feels immersive in a more relaxed way

Turns out that I also have Post Concussion Syndrome from falling out of my Semi truck in 2001. That also has a LOT to do with hearing sensitivity. A great ported subwoofer only seems to offend my hearing if there is too much *relative* infrasonics. Sealed subs can generate a lot of infrasonics, but ported subwoofers have a different way that room gain affects the output. I agree about ported subwoofers feeling like a warm bath.

@@Subwoofer101 Sorry to hear about the fall. I guess it highlights the individuality and hence subjectivity of the audio listening experience. For me perhaps I hark back to first hearing a subwoofer in the early 90s at a friends house and it was a ported setup and the woofing of bas out of the ports had me mesmerised. Thirty years on and having listened to systems perhaps a hundred times the price, that system still seems to be the holy grail for me!

Thanks for another great video. Just a little experience from my side: Recently I recalibrated my 3 subtwoofers (2 ported, 1 sealed) with a Anti-mode EQ. And to be honest, I'm completely blown away by the performance of my sealed sub. Since then I only use sealed sub for casual listening and I only switch on my ported subs for movies and games.

+Subwoofer 101 Sure, no problem at all. I recently bought a 15 inch ported sub: the Klipsch R-115SW. Then I have an older sub from SVS: the PB12/2 ported sub, an absolute beast with ridiculous output. Lastly I have another old sub namely the B&W ASW CDM, which is a sealed 1000watt RMS subwoofer with a sub-20hz in-room frequency response. They are all hooked up on a Anti-Mode 8033 that uses a proprietary microphone and flattens output in roughly 20-150hz. What you explained about sealed subs being more punch, was exactly what I was looking for. By doing the subwoofer crawl and a lot calibrating I finally have the low-end experience I was looking for. I suspect that we all hear differently. Most people that I know prefer ported subs, because they are perceived as being louder. For me, nearly every ported design that I have ever auditioned sounds OK in some demanding music and movie scenes, but I can always hear some chuffing and distortion in ported subs, regardless of price. I suspect it's due to the fact that my hearing is very sensitive; high frequencies hurt my ears, and ported subs just sound flabby to me. I finally overcame my hesitance to buy sealed subs, and when they were hooked up, placed and tuned, it was like hearing deep bass for the first time; deep, room shaking and not a trace of chuffing. I was literally amazed at how much better sealed subs sounded on both music and movies, I will never own another ported sub. That being said, I think it's in the way I hear; somebody else might audition the same system, and come away with the polar opposite conclusion. To each their own, I suppose.

I think your experience is pretty typical. Most ported subs are a hot mess, with all of the problems you mentioned. That's why "The List" is so short. Very few subwoofers behave the way they should, but the ones who do give you even more depth down low. The list was very enlightening, since I am now the proud owner of the PB 2000's little brother, the SB 2000. I absolutely love the way they sound. I thought about the PB 2000, but space is a consideration, and fear of ported design sent me to the sealed SVS. Anyway, I'm very happy with them!

I guess it all comes down to preference, but one thing is certain; as you said, I am very impressed with SVS products so far, and in a few days will be hooking up a THX certified receiver which will be a 5.2 Dolby Atmos/ DTS X system. As I said, space is a consideration, so I went with SVS prime elevation speakers to do it all. Really looking forward to getting everything up and running.

You might already know of the settings, but I missed it myself when I first went Atmos. I dig the Elevations, I use them for all surround duties, especially in the RV project.

I have a 4th order band-pass (a sealed dual speaker chamber built into a ported box, with the speakers pointing into the ported chamber, dual 12" at 750rms both) in my house, it's the best sub-bass I've ever heard, extremely pleasant both to the ear and the body... and addictive. Good frequency response, emphasized deepness down to 22hz and really clean sub-bass (best from 60Hz down to 22Hz, exactly what i love), all in one box that was meant to be in a car. It's so good that it's hard to find out where the subwoofer is located in the room when it's working. I had doubts before putting it in-house while it was dying in the garage, but when I tested it I've never used the home cinema or another sub again, the 4th order is on another level. But in the end of course, it's all about individual preferences.

I got an SB 3000 instead of a pb2000. The cost on the SB was only 50$ more than the pb2000 (outlet). I only watch movies, it’s in a small bedroom. Do you think i made a good choice? Larger sealed vs smaller ported? i really like to feel/breathe my bass I do not have space for dual right now until about a year. I was told with room gain the sealed would sound like or better than a ported.

The SB-3000 does sound more like a ported sub than the SB-2000. I would consider getting another down the road to run duals, but make sure you are comfortable with the sealed. If I didn't have an issue with sealed, the SB-3000's sound awesome.

What do you think causes the fatigue? Is it air pressure? Id like tight sound for music but the fatigue doesnt sound fun. I get ear fatigue from my closed back headphones so I suspect it might be similar

Some people can and do get used to the sound. It was better after a month, but I still couldn't get used to it to the point of enjoyment. Really sucks for my channel. My theory is that the sealed enclosure changes the pressure in the room slightly as the driver goes in and out. Almost like going up and down in altitude quickly. I'm talking about very small pressure changes, but apparently enough to feel it. With a ported box, you have a pressure relief. As the sub goes out, air flows in and vise versa. That's the best way I can think to describe it.

The sealed sub issue seems similar, but maybe to a lesser extent. I'll have to read more on this and hopefully demo ported vs sealed somewhere. I'm 90% music, 10% movies, besides the sealed has the tight sound and so much higher wife acceptance factor - I like beautiful things as well, so it doesn't seem like an easy choice!

@Subwoofer 101, was wondering if you could help me out. I'm in the market for a new subwoofer, I'm currently using a very old Klipsch KSW-12. I'm really liking SVS but I'm not sure which sub I want to get, SB 2000 Pro or PB 2000 Pro. Here's the thing, the sub would go under my projector screen. From the floor to the screen is 18". The SB 2000 Pro would fit with no problem but the PB 2000 Pro would be too tall, unless I laid it on it's side. What's your thoughts on that?

I agree with you mostly on this video as Im pretty sure your talking about the ported vs sealed SVS subs you have in your room. My 2 cents on the sealed vs ported subs is that it greatly depends on the size of the sealed sub that will determine the output and in some cases outgun a same size ported (depending on the manufacturer, not counting homemade subs that's a whole nother ballgame). Velodyne is one of the first makers of marketed subs and there sealed subs blend in very good with systems (I'm mainly talking about there mid to high end subs) with output that is dizzying). My point is I have owned both ported and sealed subs from SVS (which was ported) Velodyne (sealed) and currently a Paradigm Servo 15 which in my room works best for movies and music, so I think it really boils down to obviously your room, the size of the sub (if it's sealed) the manufacturer you choose and your budget that will give you what your looking for. And like +Subwoofer 101 was saying SVS has the in home trial and free shipping and you can't go wrong with that.

+Lance Simmons Yeah the comparisons are pretty specific to these 2 subs. For sure, the SB-2000's will make most non DSP ported subs look silly at depth. That Servo 15 has gobs of power, that certainly helps!

Also, people hear differently. Have different ear canals and response in their ear drums. Also, also, there's no real reason to say that the sealed will hit 11 hertz if it's not loud enough to truly feel it. The ported will definitely get down to 10-11 hertz also, but it's not loud enough in my opinion to say that it's a true 10 hertz sub lol. Just my two cents.

I have been torn between the SB2000 Pro & the PB2000 Pro. I want a sub more for music than for a home theater setup yet I listen to a lot of bass heavy electronic music that reaches down to the lowest of frequencies (not mid ranged electronic music that's more main stream). It seems like the consensus online is that the SB is better for music and the PB is better for home theater due to its larger output and lower frequency range. How ever the response on the PB seems to be almost as flat as the SB. I would be doing most of my listening in a small bedroom that's about 10x10ft and a living room that's 20x20ft. I also produce music a little bit and want an accurate sub.

I'm 45. Still prefer ported, even for music. Especially for music. Love the sound of a good double bass or cello on good ported subwoofers. Like a warm bath of sound. Quality, *deep bass* ported subwoofers, in a matched dual configuration, sound a LOT more clean and cohesive than typical ported subwoofers. Any single ported subwoofer will sound less than optimal, in my experience. Sealed subs are less efficient, can produce infrasonics that are uncomfortable for some people (like me, due to a medical condition), and can "sound" shallower to the same model's ported counterpart, despite deeper extension. It's not as simple as saying sealed sounds better/cleaner than ported. There are many caveats. Sealed subs have amazing qualities too. But to categorize ported as busy, unrefined, or strictly for "the younger crowd" is an unfair characterization, at least in respect to the subwoofers I enjoy. $200 Amazon ported subwoofer? 100%, it's not going to do well. Your opinion is not uncommon. I've tried both, I have some fairly decent experience with subwoofers, and still I chose ported. Must be some compelling reasons. It's all a matter of preference, but usually I find dismissiveness to be unfounded. It's usually the quality of the subwoofers and their end use implementation that lead to underwhelming experiences, rather than just being ported. I appreciate your feedback. I enjoy the topic, because I feel the prevailing opinion is fraught with caveats. Ported subwoofers can sound amazingly clean and refined. It's just that 90%+ of them don't.

Glad you found me! A few key points: Dual subwoofers are where it's at. It's not for more loudness, it's to hear the bass you don't even realize you're missing. With a single, you WILL have missing bass, it's a physics thing, and not the fault of any subwoofer. Check out my Bass Hack series. Little tips to improve your sound. The PB-2000 will have a similar depth of presentation (both have a really deep sound), the PB-3000 will just hit harder during heavy scenes. Of course it will go louder too, but if you're running duals, you'll likely hurt your ears before dual PB-2000's run out of steam. It's stronger, cleaner bass, even within the same loudness. I think you'll dig your PB-2000. Turn up the gain to about 3 O'clock, or about 75%, and turn down the AVR Subwoofer Level to compensate, -11.5 is ok. With a flat response sub, you can run more gain without sounding overdone. A lot of this is in the Bass Hack series, like how to adjust subs by ear. Hope that helps!

Thank you for your words! I do have two subs. I will be pairing the PB 200 with the BIC F12. I knew that are not quite in the same league but I thought it would be better than nothing. At least until I get purchase another pb 2000. I realize I will have to compensate the subs differently. It's times like this I wish my AVR had independent sub outputs so I could adjust them differently. I will be getting the Marantz Sr 7012. I ran a single Re XXX 15 inch sub {cost $1000} running off a 2400 watt Zapco c2k 9.0xd {$2000} it was boomy n loud as hell and shook my car to pieces but only rap sounded good. It did not compare to my old skool pair of 15s HX2 Power series {paid $400} and powered them with a cheapo amp. The sealed beat it in every way and every kind of music sounded awesome.

The lower the number in hertz, the deeper it is. So 20 is lower than 30. You probably knew that, I just wanted to make sure for the sake of others reading this. I think what you're asking about is the depth of presentation. A subwoofer can be rated accurately to 20 hertz and still start getting relatively quieter as it goes deeper, and some begin getting quieter as soon as 40 hertz or higher. It's a shallow sound. Subs that are on my list actually get a little louder as they go deeper. So even though they might have the same factory rating, the subs on The List SOUND a lot deeper. This allows you to get gobs of bass, without it sounding overdone. You can usually run a lot more gain with deep bass subs.

Sure, just a few things I would do personally. Ideally, you want to run two subs, and if you are going to put one on its side, I would put both on their side for continuity. I would also protect the finish. Otherwise, no real issues.

Do you get the ear pressure from cars too? I get it from SUVs and hatchbacks, probably due to the open rear of the vehicle. I have had persistent ear pressure in my left ear for the past 7 months and have had a terrible time tracking down a solution. It's torture!

Yeah that's wind buffeting in the car or SUV. Ear problems suck. There are all kinds of things, and sometimes it's not something you would expect. Blood pressure medication can make a difference, as in the medication causing it. Slight infection. I wish you luck in figuring it out, and it's definitely worth doing so.

Great video, i have enjoyed the reviews and advice. I have decided to try dual subs as my single 8in velodyne sub can't plumb the depths so to speak. My main concern is output, having a rather small room 11x18 the sheer size of the PB2000's all but eliminates them from the mix. Having said that my main speakers and surrounds are rather large stand mount B&W 602S2's mixed with a Yamaha 5 channel 100 watt amp. I'm afraid the SB1000 would just flat disappear , your thoughts on the PB 1000 vs the SB2000 in terms of output ? SVS recommends either the SB2000 or PB2000 for my setup , but size is an issue .

+Speed Weasel Tough one. If you haven't already, check out the decision chart on the article, and decide whether ported or sealed best handles what you want. If sealed works for you, the SB-2000's will get you done and together should deliver plenty of output unless you hate your ears, just turn the gain up to 50% and use the AVR/pre to adjust the levels. If you prefer the ported characteristics, try the PB-1000's, they will surprise you, they handle the business. You can upgrade very easily with SVS, and within the first 45 days there are no shipping charges to do so if you need to move to the PB-2000's. That said, I would try to shoehorn in the PB-2000's, I like them that much.

Your poor experience with sealed subs is curious. In my experience, ported subs introduce a few spurious sounds, like ringing, chuffing, and loss of phase coherence. Especially phase change, or time delay. To me these things are hard for a manufacturer to overcome - few do. I wonder if the more linear output of the SB2000 isn't exciting things in your listening environment, like rattling your fireplace or silverware and causing the discomfort that is annoying to you. Have you tried addressing room vibrations with a good slow tone sweep? Does your discomfort vary with different source material?

The rattles had been sorted out long before the SB-2000's, it wasn't that. I'm not the only one to experience some discomfort with sealed boxes, some people just have that sensitivity. I agree that few ported subs sound great. Ported SVS subs are known for sounding great with excellent manners. It's pretty much their thing. Everybody has their preferences. I like ported subs, other guys will only have sealed subs. Neither are wrong.

This might be a weird question but how deep would you say is ”too deep”. Currently, my sibwoofers have around 10 db peak in that 20-30 Hz range compared to the main listening area (40-80 Hz). You mentioned that you can overdo that deep sound. Where would you set the limit there. I currently feel all the bass like a punch in the gut, but am wondering if it can hurt my ears from that 10 db boost in that 20-30 Hz range. Again, this is a very weird question. Just want to know how much deeper it should be in those lower frequencys in your oppinion?

Not sure if you're still replying, but I gotta try. I am in a dilemma. I just got the SB1000 like 4 months back and the only great reviews I see every where starts with the 2000 series. Did I just made a mistake? Would an upgrade to SB2000 make a night and day difference? I chat with the SVS chatline and they told me only upgrade to the 2000 if I am not happy with the volume of the 1000. What do you think?

Agree with you. Sealed is the way to go with music with duals. Just ordered four Dayton ho 18 inch subwoofer to go sealed. Want to get a mini dsp but the learning curve looks kinda hard. Great video as usual.

I dunno... There's the other side of the spectrum where people have misophonia and sealed subs just sound more clear and tonal at a lower volume. Are you just blasting the sealed sub louder than you need to maybe? Ported subs are generally just louder so sealed boxes tend to sound louder at the same gain levels so to compensate you tend to play them lower just like if you were to get two subs you'd play them lower than if you had 2. Not just because two subs are louder either but two subs are clearer.

Some very good info...and to add to it...the great thing about ported subs is you always have the option to go ported or sealed...I'm assuming SVS provided the foam insert for the ported sub...idk if they did or not,but it's very easy to make one...sealed subs don't give you that option...if you get sealed,you're pretty much stuck with it...unless you enjoy voiding warranties...lol

Not all subs are designed to run both. The PB-1000, PB12-NSD, and PB-2000 are NOT designed to run as sealed. Plugging the port will cause damage. That said, you're right about the subs that are designed for different configurations. You just have to be sure to set the EQ to the right port tuning. Definitely gives you more options.

I never thought of the sealed vs ported about being hard to listen to. I have never had sealed sub in my house but i have in my car. I thought it was just the sealed sub being slightly cheaper then ported sub. I consider my ears very sensitive as to hearing clarity.

When I plugged in the PB-2000's directly after the SB-2000's, it was clear my mind was not playing tricks on me. Hey man it's me again. So I had mentioned early how I was getting a lot of dead spots with my sub, and how it just wasn't performing as well as I wished. So anyway today I was playing around with settings on my AVR, and I decided to switch the phase on the sub. For some reason, it was like a whole new sub. It was literally night and die. The bass is full and low now, and sounds like a sub should. It's set to reverse. Not sure why this happened but I'm very pleased. Anyway have a good one!

I got a few questions for you. I have a BIG MANCAVE almost 9,000 cu ft. My single Velodyne DEQ-10r subwoofer which has 195 watts RMS and 390 watts dynamic which is placed in one corner does actually pretty good. However, I do not get the heart rumbling, wall shaking like I should for movies, I am mostly into movie watching a little music but not so much, so bass in music I don't really care it its there or not. But movies is a different animal. I am looking into replacing the subwoofer though. I don't like the footprint of the SVS PB 4000 (to DAMN big) and the PB 3000 is a little more tolerable but not to much. Here is the question. Question about the SVS PC 4000. Do you think that one PC 4000 should take care of the problem, I am thinking this has 1200 watts RMS and 4000 watts peak, at the Minimum power out it still is putting out 6 times the punch of the Velodyne. The PB 4000 is just to damn wide and deep for my liking. But the PC 4000 has a great footing to it. I understand that its like a used glove you get use to it and don't want to change gloves. I have talked to individuals at SVS doing my homework and research and they are telling me that I should run duels but I don't think its necessary I am thinking its a sells pitch to spend more $$$ lol. I am thinking since the Velodyne does what is does with the minimal watts it does put out ONE bigger sub will do great. I am also in the process of resetting my Home movie system. First off, thank you for your service. Hearing damage is all too common. I can't address everything in this response, but I think I can address the biggest issue. Dual subwoofers are not a sales pitch thing. I would take SVS's smallest ported subs in a dual configuration, so 2 PB-1000's over a **single** PB-16 Ultra. That's how important it is. It's called the standing wave effect, and a single subwoofer causes cancellations within any room. There is no such thing as a "sweet spot" with a single subwoofer. No matter where you are, bass is missing due to standing wave cancellations. Dual subwoofers create constructive interference and alter the overall wave pattern, reducing cancellations substantially, while increasing output and a sense of "tightness" and explosiveness. See my video on Swiss Cheese Bass, or the importance of dual subwoofers, or top mistakes. It's all there. In your shoes, the answer to me seems simple. Dual PC-2000 Pro's. All day long. Not much difference in price, but night and day in performance vs a single PC-4000. I literally cannot hear what a subwoofer truly sounds like without a matching pair. Neither can you, or anyone else. It's a matter of physics, and the cancellations can't be beaten into submission with brute force. 😄 Think bicycle vs unicycle. Both are rideable, but two wheels are a LOT easier and more enjoyable.

Not only music, but great low clean output on movies too. For a dedicated home theater one should go with dual PC or PB series, but for thee next best thing this will do it without any compromise. Have you ever been to an IMAX(not LIEMAX) theater? That was the first time I had heard bass so low, but so loud. They say they reach 23hz comfortably and the sound to me was awesome. I wonder if the sound characteristics of the pb-2000 are similar to that of the IMAX subs. I wanted more punch in my chest though. Not sure if it's because of the volume or frequency ranch of their subs.

+acelakid94 I wonder what the Imax graphs look like? The PB-2000's are comfortable down to 14 hertz in my room, so I'll let you draw your own conclusions. For all reasonable purposes, since my hearing ability falls off around 17 hertz, both the PB-2000's and the SB-2000's are essentially bottomless to me, a great quality in a sub. Being "comfortable" down to 23 hertz leaves some room for interpretation, but I expect that it's on the up and up. When I say comfortable, I mean the point at which the subs start to roll off, where others might consider comfortable to be at -3db or even worse -6db. For sure, the difference between real Imax and standard theaters is undeniable. It's been a long time since I went to an Imax theater, I saw Avatar when it came out at the real Tempe, AZ Imax. I've also been to a the Imax at the Grand Canyon, also a real Imax. I was impressed with the sound, although that was long before hearing the kind of equipment I enjoy now. I should go see an Imax for a more up to date comparison. I wasn't aware of the Lie Max problem, I'm just fortunate that the theaters I have visited are real. Subwoofer 101 I see. I don't hear anything after 17hz either. For me the IMAX subs weren't tactile enough. I'm going to see the Batman vs Superman movie in an IMAX theater with Buttkickers (tactile transducers) under the seats soon, so hopefully that fixes my super low bass need or at least help it out a bit. On another note, accurate punchy bass in music is important to me in music, so I think I'll be looking at getting a pair of sb-2000s thanks to your review :)

can you quantify the amount of "tightness" the SB has over the PB? I'm seriously super torn. I'm wondering if the extra output might be more worth it. I'm choosing a sub mainly for music, however I really enjoy electronic music. I also have sensitive ears. So the PB is enticing, however I really wonder if I'm missing out on musicality. The SB-2000 seems to have more "awards" and "accolades".

The ear sensitivity makes me lean towards recommending the ported. I love the way the ported subs sound for music, about 70% of my listening. If I had to quantify it for my own experience, using experiences I've never experienced before (lol), I'd say sealed are more like formula one cars, they'll turn on a dime if you're going fast enough, but the ride isn't exactly plush. Ported are more like a Nissan GTR, fast enough in corners to cause neck damage (just ask Jeremy Clarkson) but a lot more comfortable as a daily driver. Both (I imagine) are a blast to drive, but you could put a lot more time in a GTR. At least for me, the response of sealed was so tight it was almost too tight. Some people really like that. For sure, ported SVS are not loose in any way. Going dual is really important too, standing waves (present with both sealed and ported) can give the impression of overhang in a round about way. If you're in a spot where the frequency is peaking (it moves through the room as the frequency changes) the bass could sound "bloated", but it's the standing wave effect. Duals essentially wipe that out. The sealed are more accurate, ideal for those mixing music, but for enjoying music, I like ported myself.

I probably should have just for kicks. I'm of the opinion that completely matched subs are ideal, but I did not try 2 sealed and 2 ported. Missed opportunity. People do run 4 subs, so that's always an idea. Do you have the SVS feet yet? They decouple the subs from the floor and I measured a little more output at the same volumes. Won't have as much impact as adding more subs, but would give a little extra oomph. And you can always run the subs a little hotter from the AVR. As for avr I run a rather unusual setup, JBL lsr308's linked to the pb2000's, then linked to a red scarlet audio interface then to PC, my setup is much more for music than movies but they are enjoyed from time to time! if by gain you mean power they both sit a little under half!

+ferdis7 Yeah the PB-2000's have 4 feet on the bottom, so that's the option you would need. The PB 13 ultra has 6 feet on the bottom instead of 4 because it's a bit bigger and heavier. The isolation system basically replaces the existing feet on the bottom of the subwoofer. It looks stock, imo. You can try running the gain a little higher too (up to 50%) and if it doesn't sound overdone, stick with it, but you have probably already tried that. But yes, that set-up is a bit different, but not wrong. Just not typical.

That is the typical ported subwoofer experience. Stick with subs from the list, and for sure split your budget to run duals. Running duals really tightens up the sound in my opinion. It helps even with garbage subs, but with good subs it really comes together nicely. Without a doubt though, sealed subs are "quicker", and some people really prefer them. Sloppy, loose subs are common when ported, but one of the reasons my list is so small is because I won't tolerate that kind of thing. If they are sloppy or unrefined, I have no interest. The subs on the list are tight with a flat response, which also reduces the boominess. Boominess also occurs with the standing wave effect, creating loud spots and dead spots, which is why running duals is so important. Music is my favorite part of deep ported subs. I've had no experience with the Epik, and sadly they are out of business. I would just be venturing a guess trying to compare them without any practical experience with the Epik. It was a capable sealed sub as I understand it, plagued with some reliability problems (per Wikipedia), but I can't really offer much more than that. The closest comparison, I would have to assume, would be dual SB-2000's with a combined 1000 watts RMS, 2200 peak. Dual PB-2000's would win the output game, and come across as sounding deeper since they have more output under 40 hertz. Even though the SB-2000 goes deeper in room, the PB-2000 has more emphasis at depth.

Thank you. The reason I was asking is because I have two Epik Empire. Thankfully, I didn't have a problem with any defects the way other people did. But, one problem I am concerned about is something that happens on only a small number of movies such as Everest, Jurassic World, and X-Men: Apocalypse. I used my Radio Shack SPL meter to determine that at the volume of 102db in scenes that display very low frequencies, there will be severe distortion that I understand is called "Clipping." It does this on both Empire subwoofers at the exact same volume, so it doesn't appear to be a defect. That is apparently just the limit of the product. This is a bit frustrating, because 102db is reached relatively easily at times at that lower frequency. The Empire can apparently output much higher decibel levels as long as it isn't a lower frequency. But, I use the subwoofers mostly for movies, so that is what I care about. For example, in the movie X-Men: Apocalypse, the deepest sounds in the entire movie come when Apocalypse is fighting Charles Xavier in a psychic way at the end of the movie. When Apocalypse grows in size and punches the floor, that is when this "distortion" that is apparently called "clipping" occurs at 102db. Is that what "Clipping" is? ... Do you know of a way to stop clipping like that? ... I have tried everything from adjusting the Gain on the A/V Receiver to the Volume on the Empire subwoofer. I even decided to use dual LFE inputs, which did in fact make the volume about 3db or 4db louder without changing the power or gain. But in all scenarios when 102db is reached, this distortion apparently called "Clipping" occurs in those spots. Do the SVS subwoofers experience "clipping" like that? If so, at what volume?

The SVS ported will have a more of a pronounced depth, while the sealed will have a more linear depth. You get more headroom, deeper extension, and more convincing presence with the PB-2000's. I think it's worth the price difference. Right now I am going back and forth about the SVS PB-2000 and the Rhythmik FVX15 for the last piece of the puzzle in my HT but i'm trying to get as many people's personal experiences before taking the plunge. I'm going dual and that's a lot of money. Z Reviews has had both and he said while both are amazing subwoofers, he believes that the FVX15 wins in output, extension, and accuracy. Not by a ton, but noticeably in each category. the accuracy surprised me considering its a 15 vs a 12, but then again it is a servo sub. It's 300 more than the SVS in a dual config, which isn't the end of the world but 300 is 300. Just wanted your experienced input if you had any. Thanks for the knowledge!

+Rich Miller I have not had the chance to hear Rhythmik yet. I could see it possibly winning in output (but I'm not certain, and max output can be misleading), but I too wonder about the accuracy thing. I just don't know, plain and simple. In terms of extension, the PB-2000's dip below my hearing limits (17hertz) in room down to 15-16 hertz, which is absolutely complete in my opinion. Dual PB-2000's are barely moving at my higher listening levels, they have tons of headroom left, so the benefit of more output is not a big deal since I'm nowhere near max output now. Lots of gas left in the tank. Looks like the amp is a little bigger on the PB-2000's and a longer warranty on the amp (5 year vs 3 year) which is the part that will fail more often than anything else will. The PB-2000's are also a bit smaller, though not by much. Of course, the Rhythmik is on "The List" of best subwoofers, so it won't be a bad choice. I definitely couldn't trash talk them and feel good about it, I put them on the list for good reason. It's a tough choice, both are solid units. I do like the ability to upgrade within a year with SVS. I would be interested to see my in room response with the Rhythmiks. Hope that helps, let me know which way you go. Either option should be quite impressive.

There is a difference in tightness between pb1000 and pb2000? I'm asking because pb1000 should be tighter because of the smaller driver, physics should always work. Any difference in sound quality on music ? Dual pb2000 is a lot more powerful than dual pb1000 or a slight margin?

+GraveNoX The PB-2000's have more gas in the tank, they don't have to work as hard. I don't know if I subscribe to the "smaller driver, tighter response" theory. Not that it's wrong, I'm just not certain. The larger driver does not need to travel as far for the same volume levels, theoretically making the return excursion a little quicker. That's me guessing, I'm not an engineer and I don't know for certain. I would prefer the PB-2000's over the PB-1000's, but I would be really happy with the PB-1000's if that's all my budget allowed, they are outstanding. I see what the extra money delivers, and I think it's worthwhile to go PB-2000 if you have the funds and the space.

After 5:30 in you've tried to differentiate between a ported and sealed sub in two inherently flawed ways. Both are "air pressure devices". The ported box creates the pressure waves (sound waves) using both the port and the driver, thanks to helmholtz resonance effect. Neither the air in the box or in the port is escaping. The two air masses should be seen as two interacting springs. And about room gain. Both box types are affected the same way, it's just physics. The in room response will vary primarily as a function of the subwoofer model and design, not the box type. A ported subwoofer can be designed to have the same response as a sealed design, except below the tuning frequency of the ported sub. where the "natural" response of a sealed design falls off at 12 dB/oct. Usually HP-filters are used as a precaution to limit the driver(s) from reaching their excursion limit at high sound levels, both in sealed and ported subs. What you're rambling on is not about sealed vs ported, it's your (mostly) subjective assessment of the SB-2000 and the PB-2000.

Thank God someone else noticed this. This would explain the "excess noise" issue he pupports for the sealed box? It's exactly the opposite, for the reasons you state above. There is both group delay and energy storage at tuning, which is far worse sq wise if you are listening for "excess noise". He needs to catch up on the technical aspects of speaker-room interaction and modal infuences before posting content like this that does nothing to clarify what and why people should be choosing as their next subwoofer. 2c.

I see the point of confusion. The sealed subs did not produce any "excess noise" at any point. I was trying to explain that noise in general fatigues my ears easily when other people might not be bothered. I annotated the video accordingly. As for needing to catch up on modal influences, I'm quite familiar, that is why I run multiple subwoofers, which reduces the standing wave problem substantially, reducing the need for room treatments to combat those influences. Neither subwoofer produced ANY unwanted noise in the slightest, and the performance of the SB-2000 and the PB-2000 is generally recognized as world class, and I agree 100%. As far as ported subwoofers go, it's hard to audibly pick up on any group delay and energy storage issues with the PB-2000's, especially in a multiple subwoofer configuration. The common problems with ported subwoofers are much less common in the subs I discuss, which makes them unique, which is why I discuss them in the first place. New viewer on an "old" video here! Im on a budget and just saw that the discontinued svs sb12-nsd is on the svs outlet for just $400. Its 400w rms and a sealed 12" sub. I currently have older dual 10" ported Klipsch 200w rms. U think i should go for dual sb12-nsd? Twice the power is what is attacking me! Im a movie type of guy and i dont think wife or kids have any discomforts with loud sound, as we usually watch movies together. Thanks!

Dual matching, ported subwoofers, either the PB-1000 Pro's, or the PB-2000 Pro's. Keeping them identical is more important for sensitive ears in my opinion. I would locate them on the front stage, equidistant to your listening position, much like you see in my videos. Run room correction within a 4 foot circle, never going beyond 2 feet from the first sample location. I would consider it vital to do the distance hack, adding 4 feet to the room correction value. This will reduce cancellations, and be more comfortable. Dynamic EQ set to "Flat", Reference can be harsh. From there, do my crossover hack, adjusting subs by ear hack, gain hack, and make sure you're getting full lossless audio. Those should be the most comfortable subwoofers for you, as I find them comfortable for me, and my hearing is quite fragile and, and easily offended. Brain injury makes it too sensitive. From there, if the deep bass is causing irritation, you can use the PEQ's in the SVS app to find a more comfortable response. Just make sure that both subs are adjusted the exact same way in the PEQ's. You can get an idea of that with my SVS app hack video. I don't know that you'll be able to have an irritation-free experience with your hearing condition, but I think minimizing it would go a long way. I would imagine that the higher frequencies will be more problematic for you, but too much pressure will likely cause issues too. For that reason I would suggest avoiding sealed subwoofers. By having your system a little bass heavy, your loudness will be less offensive. Hard to explain, but with all of my Bass Hacks employed, when the guys from SVS came out to the motorhome and heard it, Larry was very surprised at the amount of punch and powerful bass, at much lower volumes than they run in their demos. So using all of the tricks in my bass hacks, you're able to get the same kick without needing to listen nearly as loud. It's just the way I have things balanced. Hopefully that helps, I definitely understand sensitive hearing. It's not fun. I would also reduce the number of hard surfaces, in favor of textiles to reduce echo and ringing. Basically, the stuff on my channel is pretty much exactly what you need. Comfort is vital to me. I'm the first SVS affiliate, and for a long time I was their only affiliate. So when you follow my links before your purchase, I can earn a commission. Their sealed subwoofers outsell ported 2 to 1, but I can't recommend them because I can't tolerate them nearly as well as ported subwoofers. The most I can do is about 30 to 45 minutes with sealed subwoofers from any brand, while I can listen to ported SVS subwoofers all day long with no issues. If I were to be disingenuous, and promoted sealed subwoofers, theoretically it could easily double my commissions. That's not my style, and not being straight with your KZbin viewers is a pretty foolish thing to do. Wow, long response. Sorry for rambling, but I identify with those who have fragile hearing of any kind. Hopefully it will help you get what you're looking for!

Room size is not really a big deal for equipment, it's all relative. Super large rooms could be an issue with needing more power. You will have small room issues, even with small subs, and I made a video about that. Avoid being too close to the walls, if possible, to avoid boundary gain. Dual subwoofers are STILL important in a small room, probably more important, honestly. I ran a single in the motorhome and it was not pleasant. Duals? Spot on. It's the only way to fly, regardless of room size. And yes, adding 4 feet to the subwoofer room correction value is still 100% recommended. You are shifting the timing, and that applies to any size room. XT32 is better than basic Audyssey, especially if you can't get away from the wall. That requires more precise mic placement for room correction. Seems counterintuitive and doesn't make sense on the surface, but dual matching ported deep bass subwoofers will be more comfortable than a single. Constructive interference from dual subs is cleaner sounding, and combined with the distance hack, it's the most comfortable solution I've experienced, in a 24x24 room, a 10x10 room, and in the motorhome. Dual PB-2000 Pro's are what I use in the motorhome, and it sounds better than anything else, because of the abundance of fabric, and no rattles at all. Talk about counterintuitive, but the motorhome is on a super solid diesel bus chassis and welded steel cage, rather than wood. More solid than the houses I've had home theaters in. Crazy stuff.

Sorry if this don't belong here but I'm struggling to decide on with receiver I should get.... first I'm getting a 65 inch curved Samsung TV with hdr and 4k plus getting a true 4k Samsung player. The 1st receiver is a denon avr-s920w with all the features I want and the 2nd is also a denon avr-x2200w also has all the features I want but almost $100 bucks between them . Do you see where the extra money comes in at and why?

The X line is the higher end, with a nicer room correction. This may further complicate things, but you may consider the X3200 amzn.to/2j4UScC (affiliate link) to future proof a little in case you wanted to add external amps in the future. I had the X2000 (older version of X2200) and my biggest complaint was no Pre amp outputs. So, of course, now I have an X6200.

Based on some reviews I've found it does not go as deep as I would like. I like my subs to hit 20 hertz flat with authority, and the RSL Speedwoofer seems to trail off around 30 hertz. Not that I'm picking on RSL, most subwoofers do this. I'd say spend the extra $100 and get an SVS bit.ly/PB-1000 (affiliate link). Flat in my room to 21 hertz, audible to 19 hertz. It's the least expensive sub I know of with that kind of performance.

Thanks for the review. You mentioned very interesting point, which is they sound good/loud even at Low volumes. That's the exact requirement I have. I am not into playing movies too loud, but would love to hear good amount of base even at -10 or -15 or -20 volume levels! Which one of these 2 subs(or any other) would do that? Thanks!

Pretty much any SVS sub will give you what you're looking for because of the way they tune their subs. I'm partial to the bit.ly/SVSPB2000 (affiliate link), and since they have the deeper sounding signature than the SB-2000, they will probably give you what you want, but the SB-2000 will still do a great job. I'll highlight the importance of getting 2 subs, if you weren't already planning for that. If it meant going with dual bit.ly/PB-1000 subwoofers, you'd get a better overall experience than a single PB-2000. The PB-1000 will also sound great at low volumes. Of course, dual PB-2000's are excellent. I listen to some music @ -35 to -40 and it still sounds full, deep, and appropriate, and that's been true of every SVS sub I've heard. Of course Audyssey dynamic EQ does help too, but it's the bass response curve of SVS subs that lends very well to low volume listening.

How would the experience be different with 2 PB-1000s v/s 1 PB-2000? Is it, louder base? More base at low volume? or what else? A single sub creates a standing wave, which creates loud spots and dead spots that shift within the room as the frequency changes. Normally, 12" subs are the smallest drivers I would recommend, but the PB-1000's are the only exception at this time. But if I Downgrade for getting couple subs (from PB-2000 to PB-1000) how much do gain, do I not lose something? Also it adds to my cost & space. So really need find out the ROI, is it really worth doing all that ? Also one more question. I visited Magnolia (Best buy) last night, they had Martin Logans Dynamo 800W and SB-2000 on display. We played both one by one. I was very sure that at LOW volumes SB will outperform Dynamo. But very surprised, Dynamo 800W (in spite of being less wattage etc) was much more louder at low volumes(which is my requirement), it was about -15 volume. He said if I get Dynamo 1000W, it will sound even better. When we increased volume to reference volume, then both were sounding equally powerful. Both subs had their volume of those set to medium. He said all other settings are same. When I increased SB-2000 volume (in the back(, then they started sounding similar at Low volume. But then I will have to always keep it high. Any idea on this? Is Dynamo going to give more base at Low volumes? It got me confused. :) Thank you so much!

The SB-2000 sounded best to me at about 55-60% gain in my room, so I'm not shocked. It's no problem to run the gain like that. Some of that comes down to relativity too, and if the music being listened to isn't very deep, the M&L will sound louder. Without writing a novel about why, this all makes sense to me, and doesn't change my opinion. As far as going Dual PB-1000's over a single PB-2000, it's a subject I've beaten to death. It will sound more balanced, fewer dead spots, increased headroom, etc... To sum it up, consider the channel that I run, and then consider the fact that I would always run dual subs if I could. oh you read comments! cool. So....I have a question if you have time. I'm using Pioneer esf-73 speakers with a yamaha as-801 for my 2.0 stereo right now. For me, acoustic sounds amazing on my system, for the price i paid. So in choosing a sub, well... my speakers are ported and the bass seems "tight" for me.(@ 40hz) What I WANT in a sub is just deeper bass, not louder. I dont know if i find SB irritating. but i do plan on having the sub turned LOW on the gain. SB or PB, and.... 2x 1000's or 1x 2000? :) thank you thank you

I'm actually uploading a video right now about subwoofer gain, which should be live tomorrow. If you're not wanting to have a lot of bass, dual PB-1000's should make you a very happy camper. Plenty of depth, and what sounds like more output than you require. I enjoyed them a lot, and I could easily live with them indefinitely. Great subs. I always suggest splitting your budget over ANY single sub. That's something I learned a while back, and I will never go back to a single subwoofer willingly. Parts of the content is missing, and you get what I call "Swiss Cheese Bass". With duals, you get much better overall response, and I also find it easier on the ears. Dual PB-2000's, being $550 more, will go deeper than you can hear (14 hertz in room) with PLENTY of headroom. Whether the added depth is worth it to you is the question, but I absolutely advise dual PB-1000's over a single PB-2000. All day, every day. From looking around, it appears to be a typical sub, nothing impressive under 30 hertz despite the factory 20 hertz rating. For glancing at reviews from others, it gets much quieter by the time it hits 30 hertz, which is all too common and a particular pet peeve of mine, pretty much the reason for the entire channel. Something like a bit.ly/PB-1000 (affiliate link) would be a much better performer, especially in dual configuration. www.subwoofer101.com/pb-1000-vs-pb-2000/ On this page you'll find a graph, and the sub you're looking at would likely be similar to the Brown line. The PB-1000 is the Green line, and it's just clearing it's throat at 30 hertz. To me the difference is night and day.

As I understand the dual sub effect to work, you want the signal and the sound to be as identical as possible. You're not the first to ask this, so don't feel bad, but I would say keep the subs as closely matched as you can. Probably wouldn't be a dumpster fire, but it wouldn't be nearly as good as identical subs. I'll have to try it at some point, but even 2 ported subs unmatched seemed off to me.

I really like the way ported SVS Subs sound for music, and I buck the trend in that I prefer ported subs for music. That's not typical, but I'm 70% music, so music is more important to me than movies. I would go 2.2, as duals allow you to hear ALL of the bass. With a single, no matter how good your room correction is, and what the measurements suggest, you're still missing response that would normally be there with duals. I call that Swiss Cheese Bass. I'd easily split my budget for dual PB-1000's over a single PB-2000. The PB-2000 is one of my favorite subwoofers, but duals make that much of a difference. I would say especially for music, go dual.
