UPDATE: Since uploading this video, I've learned more about bookbinding and realize this is NOT a kettle stitch. I'm self-taught and came up with this method years ago to make text blocks for case binding. It's actually a combination of stitches, but at the time, I didn't know what to call it. Apologies for the incorrect naming!
A traditional kettle stitch is typically used to link signatures together on the outside ends to form a text block for case binding. If you prefer this method, here's a great tutorial by ‪@KristiWarrenHandmadeBooks‬: • Bookbinding Kettle Stitch

5 years later, I never expected this to be one of my most viewed videos! I've since received feedback (mostly from professional bookbinders) that calling this a 'kettle stitch' is incorrect, so I'm here to clarify (see description). I am self-taught and a hobby bookbinder (not a professional). When I first started bookbinding, I made my own adaptation and didn't know this was 'incorrect'. To get technical-what you see here is more like a half-kettle or a link stitch. That said, I still find this method works well for my book projects. If you prefer the traditional kettle stitch, here's a great tutorial: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3W9d4eQedyHa5I

I don't care what it's called lol, the pros can call it the hiccup stitch for all I care. It works and you made it simpler. That's what i care about. I'm a slow learner at things like this, and i have to watch videos 100 times. This one not so much cause it's easy. And if you have adapted it and put your own on it, then you can call it whatever you want. You do great work keep it up.

Thank you Jennifer for these excellent instructions. Waxing helped as my thread was tangling badly. It’s a stitch I can do, so appreciate your amending the kettle stitch!

Here’s a few additional tips: - Use gridded paper to practice binding if you’re not ready to commit to your actual pages yet. - If you don’t have beeswax you can run your thread through a tea light candle which will have a similar result. - My grandmother taught me that in sewing you always tie three knots at the end of your thread to make sure it doesn’t slip through.

Thank you. Im binding my first book and this is very clear and straightforward. I think I may have been a tad ambitious for my first attempt though. Im making a leather bound travelers journal with blank pages. Most I see have lined paper, bound in brown leather, but I draw a lot, so I wanted blank pages. Plus, I prefer black leather and I had some at home from other projects, so.....yup. I decided to make my own. I'm finding it rather fun though, so I might make more.....thanks for the tutorial!!

Tried this and it turned out quite good. But I also made quite a few mistakes. Here are those: 1) Use a paper clip to keep in place the different signatures in place or they will move. 2) Please watch the whole video before starting. Being the rushy girl I am, I just watched the beginning and thought I could do the rest myself. As a result, while looping the new signatures, I kept looping them through the thread of the first signature rather than the stich below it, which resulted in a not so good looking book. So, watch it the whole way through and then begin😂 Edit: also don't pull too hard on the thread, it'll rip through your signature 🤦😂

for anyone who may read this, if you pull more to the side(along the spine) than out(away from the spine) you can put more tension on the string without ripping paper

Thank you so much for posting this excellent tutorial. I just finished binding my first journal, and to my utter shock and surprise, it worked -- mine's not as neat as yours -- and everything you did and suggested was relevant. I did not use a contrasting thread, and it made it a little difficult to see the previous signature, because I had different colors for the covers -- next time I'll know better, but i'm very appreciative of you posting this. Cheers -- Patricia

The QUARANTINE word on You Tube is getting really tiresome, I'd like it to be quoted in a Quentin Tarantino film & machine gunned out common usage. You use the 'Q' word but its not as if your incarcerated at Guantanamo Bay along with 40,000 others & at risk of COVID &/or HIV. It just constructive criticism, its nothing personal.

I made my first hard-bound book using this stitch. It's 480 pages. I spray painted the edges gold from your other video. My very first project and it came out fantastic! Thank you for your vids. I'm starting on a second book now and plan on making this one with a rounded spine.

I don't understand how you can stitch 480 pages, isn't that too time consuming?

It probably does take a lot of time, but think of the huge-ness! A massive chunky book would be amazing! Too good to actually use, of course, heh!

Thank you! This has been very informative. I'm going to be professionally publishing my book series soon, but I have my own version of the book series that I plan on hand binding. Your videos are easy to follow. I've subscribed a few and favorited them so I can go back and follow along when I start hand binding the books.

Love your tutorials as always. If you're keeping a wish list of other binding methods, I'd love to see your take on Secret Belgian Binding. Not many online tutorials out there for that one. It seems sort of coptic stitch-like, in nature, however.

This was my first time trying to bind a book, i made a few little mistakes but it still worked out. This was very clear on how to do everything, no confusion whatsoever. I was just practicing with a small amount but enough to do all the steps, and now im going to do it, learning from my mistakes with coffee-stained paper i made myself and add a cover to it. Im so exited to see if it works.

To reduce tangling thread, thread your needle before you cut your thread. Or at least make sure your thread is threaded in that direction. That way, it lays flat and you are not pulling against the stapling of the fibers.
