But I have noticed the place I usually buy this from interstate is out of stock of Kamar 😒 might need to shop around when I finally finish something worthwhile keeping lol !

Hello Laurie, you mentioned Golden varnish for UK users, but has it actually been tested on alcohol inks? I ask because its such an expensive purchase, almost double the price of Kamar; if it doesnt work that's a lot of money down the drain. I tried Golden's Polymer Varnish and that was a complete fail. Smeared the inks everywhere. So I'm really reluctant to fork out on the one you've recommended unless its been tried and tested already. I even emailed Golden to ask if they'd tested it, but I didnt get a response. Please let me know if someone in the Alcohol Ink Art Community has given it the seal of approval based on their experience rather than hearsay. Thank you.

I used the triple thick directly on my alcohol ink tile and it made the ink run and pretty much ruined it. When you use the triple thick do you do that after you did the varnish sealer and the UV sealer?
@SezCreate
@SezCreate Жыл бұрын
You probably figured this out already but my guess is that you definitely need to use a non-reactive spray like Kamar first before the triple thick. The ink is so sensitive. I messed up a painting because I sprayed to close the first go.

I use Krylon UV archival Varnish because then I don't have to buy BOTH Krylon UV and Krylon Kamar. UV archival is more expensive but it'a two in one so it ends up being less. The UV archival IS a varnish just like Krylon Kamar so it doesn't allow the ink to move. I def seal off with Krylon Triple thick glaze at the end to get that high gloss look. I just think it makes the colors pop that much more, IMO.

I agree, I have a bad experience with Kamar making the inks blotchy. I also use the UV archival, three light coats. I am not a huge fan of the high gloss finish (it may depend on the piece), so I use satin finish. But I have recently bought the Triple-Thick, just have not tried it yet.

I have the UV resistant spray at home and I put it on a piece I had that was mostly black/grey before I knew the correct way to finish an alcohol painting and it changed color to green. Do you know if this would happen if I started with the Kamar Varnish first? I haven't seen anyone talk about a color change happening with any of these, so I suspect it might just have to do with the color black or the fact that the inks are very lightened by how much alcohol I used. Also, if I wanted to put resin on a piece, would doing this step first affect that? Do you know if it would have any protective qualities from the "smudging" effect that happens with some varnishes?
@krissyu

I talked to an artist that works at Michaels and she uses resin art for all of her alcohol inks she does not use any sprays. So it sounds like that's the sure-fire way to go I'm just afraid to use resin cuz I've never tried it before but this artist I talked to she swears by art resin.

@@jutetwine4482 Hi, since I had posted that three months ago I've done a test piece of alcohol inks on a 4 x 4 white tile and the colors I have on an are very vibrant and bright. Bright turquoise, bright pink, yellow,purple and there was absolutely no change to the colors whatsoever. I sprayed Krylon Kamar in a very light spray back and forth from top to bottom. Then I did a second coat after at least an hour or so then I did the UV archival spray two coats on top of that. And I did not have any effect on the Alcohol ink whatsoever. You might want to take a picture beforehand and see if it changes after you put on the Krylon Kamar and the UV archival spray. I also got the Krylon triple thick clear glaze and I'm going to try putting that on afterwards. I have not tried resin yet at this point. I bought Stone coat countertop resin epoxy but have not use that yet. Hope this helps.

Hi i have just managed to source Kamar varnish in the UK, but there seems to be an issue with getting a consistent spray without it clogging up/going stringy. I have given it a good shake for two minutes, and the supplier suggested warming the can which may have improved things temporarily but the unpredictability is not practical and risks ruining my pieces. Does anyone have any similar experience or tips? Thanks.

Hi I bought the kamar varnish online from a company that shipped it across for the first time, but they now think that the extreme cold on the ship has affected the varnish hence the issues I've had getting it to work. I wouldn't recommend the company as they will not refund me unless I return the varnish, and due to the combustible nature of the varnish it can only be sent by courier which is expensive and I would have to pay for it. I have had most success with Rust-oleum crystal clear protective coat which comes in matt and gloss finish. If you use thin coats and don't spray too close it seems to work with alcohol inks on both tiles and yupo. Hope that helps it is frustrating.

Great demo. Question on inks on tile. You said you go through the same process as you have demo'd here. Is additional finishing required to make the tiles heat proof for at minimum a good hot cup of coffee? Also, there is a spray form of Triple Thick. Can the spray be used instead of the fluid? Thank you again. Oh I just thought of something else. We get customers with alcohol ink art wanting to frame it. Should glass be used like in a regular frame job?

@AlcoholInkArtCommunity
@AlcoholInkArtCommunity 6 жыл бұрын
Eileen, Yes. You would want to use a more durable coating to make a tile heat-proof. My first response would be to use a resin, but many of the manufacturers say that they are only durable up to a specific temperature. I've heard others say that they have used engine enamel, but I've personally not tested that! In this video, the third layer being used is a spray called "triple thick" clear glaze from Krylon. I'm aware that there are at least two other products called "triple thick" that are spray glazes. I haven't tested them all, but they should work. I always recommend testing yourself as results vary based on a number of factors such as humidity, temperature, etc.

I've used the triple-thick crystal glaze spray on tiles. you have to be careful about keeping them flat and very steady spraying. if you pick it up too fast, the spray will run. i put a fairly heavy coat on and have good luck avoiding runs and ripples when i'm careful about keeping the tile flat afterwards.

I have experience with alcohol ink on tiles fading tremendously and with the sun fading it without using any varnish or sealant that's before I knew about sealing them. So I'm trying to find a varnish that will work but looking at some of these other comments they've used a couple these sprays that are posted on this video and it caused their alcohol inks to run or change color!!!
