It was actually Scharnhorst and Gneisenau who could make 31kn, Bismarck could only make 30.1kn and Tirpitz managed an impressive 30.7kn, l know this is a bit nitpicky but its still an important difference in war.

@@act2wasstronger182 Scharnhorst is always called a battlecruiser, which is an insult. She was a fast battleship,designed to be able to carry 6 15" guns, they hadn't built these at the time so she had 9 improved 11"ers, but she had the same belt armour as the Bismarck, and she could make 31kn, so logically... The British called her a battlecruiser... I'm sorry, what!?

Well done Sea Lord. I commend you for telling the story that includes Bismarcks crew scuttling the ship. Not sure if you have seen it but Ch4 in the UK did a fantastic two part documentary called The Battle of Hood & Bismarck that follows the research team that dove to the wreck of Bismarck to conclusively prove the ships inner water tight hull was never penetrated by the British torpedoes and thus was impossible that the British sunk Bismarck. It also included new testimony from the last surviving crew detailing the order to plant the scuttling charges before they even left Hamburg as the Kriegsmarine were very concerned about the state-of-the-art technology Bismarck had on board (as well as an Enigma machine) and it possibly falling into enemy hands. Very well done SLM! I salute you o7
@xarglethegreat
@xarglethegreat Жыл бұрын
the Ch4 documentary didnt prove anything regarding the torpedoes, the impact site is under mud and has not been examined, Bismarck had no 'state of the art' technology onboard - radar was inferior, firecontrol computer likewise, gun layout was questionable and the armor inferior. as for scuttling, they 'scuttled' a sinking ship coincidently at the same time as dorestshires torpedoes hit.
@CommodoreRayne.IMP.C-1824
@CommodoreRayne.IMP.C-1824 4 ай бұрын
It wasn't just the scuttling charges that sank Bismarck. Whilst yes, they finished him off, the Royal Navy's battering rendered the Bismarck combat ineffective by knocking out basically everything and killing most of the higher ranking officers. The Bismarck would've floated around aimlessly as a ghost ship if she wasn't scuttled.

Minor point to add Rodney launched torps at the Bismarck as well -- "According to a report by an American observer, at one point, the commander of the Home Fleet, Sir John Tovey, ordered the Rodney to fire her torpedoes if possible. About 2.5 hours later, one of the Rodney's torpedoes scored a hit on the German battleship" This should be in WoWs IMO -- Thanks for the Video ..

Well done. I'm sure you've watched James Camron's doc on the bismark. I found it interesting that the evididence seems to suggest that while Bismark was "dead," with her fire control bridge destroyed by HMS Rodney and numerous penetrations from stem to stern, none of this seemed enough to sink her. It appeared that the torpedo bulges had done their job, and it fact, it was almost certainly the scuttling charges that had caused her to go down. In light of the damage she took, this is an amazing testimony to her design and construction.
@walterkronkitesleftshoe6684
@walterkronkitesleftshoe6684 Ай бұрын
IF any scuttling actually took place then all that was scuttled was a 51000 ton mountain of sinking, flaming scrap metal. All guns silenced, her superstructure devastated, her main armour belt broken and penetrated in several places, her command staff physically obliterated, internally aflame from end to end, her stern and port gunwales already underwater, a thousand of her crew dead, and further hundreds of her crew already in the water behind her.... All that any scuttling did was to sink her a few minutes earlier than was already happening. In the world of boxing the crew's scuttling efforts are what is known as "throwing in the towel", submission of a boxer AFTER he has been punched senseless by a more skillful & powerful opponent, and only a deluded child would say, "the victor didn't win because his opponent killed himself before he lost.", when the truth is the loser had his arse ripped off by the victor and handed back to him on a plate. Imagine the ignominy of being forced to commit suicide by your opponent?

A absolutely fantastic job, well done! I did see people (not here in comment section but elsewhere) poking fun at Holland for confusing Prinz Eugen with Bismarck. Well yes if you look at the two up close than you can spot some differences. But in Holland's defense, the binoculars on HMS Hood were old, the German ships were kilometers away, not to mention Prinz Eugen and Bismarck's silhouettes were as good as the same and also (I'm not sure if it still applies) back than it was usual naval tradition to let the flagship / heaviest ship go first in line. So I really don't blame Holland for mistaking the two, literally could happen to anyone

I like how this was never revealed but apparently the design of Bismarck's hole was made to be unsinkable by torpedo's because it's whole was made with a with a unique design or texture that when a topito hit its whole it would disperse not impact but dispersed like the explosion would it's bladder all over the hole and not Pierce through it like normal Apparently it was found written that some of the men that survived let's survive or telling reports that they're commanding officer or next in command were telling them to start flooding the ship for helping it helping it to sink to the bottom of the sea instead of letting it captured by the allies Which is not surprising because they used to do this tactic with the Tigers in war 2 they were given instructions to leave a grenade in the tank so the allies don't capture it

Great video. Bismarck was not the largest commissioned European battleship of the war... Tirpitz was (being both slightly longer and heavier than the Bismarck). Vanguard was shorter and lighter than Tirpitz, so she's not even worth mentioning. Bismarck in the first half of this video is presented in WG's fantastical B hull, the A hull, used in the later half, is more historically accurate.
