The thing is it's not uncommon for theater to cast people of different races in roles that clearly weren't meant to be that race. I'm not talking about something like "Hamilton" where it's a conscious choice. I'm talking about Norm Lewis playing Javert in Les Miserables. Javert is a 19th century French policeman. I can't say for sure, but I doubt there were any of African descent at the time. His singing and acting were more important for the role. For lack of a better term, he was playing a white man.

A huge part of why I as a reader felt bad for Dumbledore was because I thought his love was unrequited and abusive on Grindlewald’s part and his ability to break free from him post Ariana made developmental sense. The fact it was mutual and fulfilled I think harmed Dumbedlore’s characterization. It felt more appropriate for Grindlewald to use Dumbledore’s feelings to get what he wanted. The fact that it was a functional relationship doesn’t work and seems so forced.

Agreed. I believed as Seamus did when I heard that he was gay in 2007 - I thought Dumbledore had a crush on Grindlewald and the evil wizard used that attraction to manipulate Albus. Once Albus realized what he was doing, the duel was on. They still might do that. What's weird is that while young Albus in the movie seemed to have that heartsick look when he remembered Grindlewald, the dark wizard himself did not seem to love anything or anyone but himself.
