Though fandoms start with "people who love the thing" they tend to continually raise the barrier of entry so that it's "people who love the thing and have read every book twice" then "people who love the thing, have read every book three times and can finish every quote from memory." We see it in adult fantasy book fans (if you haven't read LotR you aren't a real fantasy reader), in tv show fandoms (if you haven't watched classic who you aren't a whovian), and so on. In actuality, the only requirement should be "I like the thing" and with the exception of having specific forums for spoilers and non spoilers, new fans should be welcome no matter how much they know.

@@derinwithaq5811 Seriously -- I wrote parts of my bachelor thesis on LotR (discussing themes of good and evil in fantasy literature) and even though Tolkien has established a wonderful world with all of its lore and has basically inspired so many other fantasy tropes/stories -- the books are not very well paced or written engagingly enough (at least imho). I easily prefer The Hobbit to LotR, because it doesn't come across as pretentious.

I think the main reason there have never been theories about Percy Jackson is because you'll need some form of video footage to keep the video interesting.(The movies don't exist) Even if the theory is great you won't be able to hold the audience's attention with just the camera focusing on your face. Also all the other universes that have theories made about them have an extra bit of fanbase because of their Movies or TV Series. Hopefully this will change soon as the PJO tv series is coming and I have already seen quite a few people in the fanbase starting to get ready to make videos on it. (A lot of them are completely new youtubers so this might just start a new generation of youtubers.)

I will always love the Percy Jackson books more than the Harry Potter books, but I do think it should be said that although the portrayal of diverse characters are way more prevalent. There are still quite a few things where Rick still stereotyped or has gone down different storyline that are still hurtful for many minorities and that shouldn't be something that is gonna be overshadowed. @@taylorboney1089 and it's well established. But with the adaptation on disney plus it will hopefully multiply. I'm really anxious. It could either be a huge success giving it potential to become a huge franchise (because of the massive amount of already existing content) or it could flop and really disappoint fans. This has to be good. I'm really REALLY rooting for it as I LOVE Percy Jackson with all my heart. It's so dear to me. As well as Rick's other series (especially Magnus Chase.) So yeah... well just have to see how this turns out. But think about how big the franchise will be if its successful. Think about the new generation of fans it will attract. It could quite literally become a gold mine for Disney. So it better not be screwed up or underwhelming.

I feel like people tend to compare the two, which in my opinion is unfair because they are VERY different stories that share minor similarities. I think I can name all of them right here: - A sassy young boy with black hair and green eyes discovers he's tied to a different world amongst ours through his parentage after growing up with at least one crappy person in their life. -Because of a certain incident they end up going to a place with more people like them, whom because of their parentage are a part of this other world unknown to regular people. They are also separated into different places which is not random and has reasoning behind it that is not age or gender. There are also classes at this place. -The main character's squad is composed of his female best friend who is a really smart girl, and his male best friend who has a distinct feature about himself. There is also the mentor who is very old. And a pair of brothers who are pranksters. -There is a big prophecy that is looming throughout the entire series that is connected to the protagonist. There is a big baddie who's plan is to build themselves up because they were previously weakened, and use people as their pawns to accomplish their plan. And they want to do this so they can do this big thing that would be really bad for everyone else. -The entire series takes place over the course of years. That's it. Or at least all I recall. Also those are pretty generic and vague. They are ultimately VERY different overall and comparing them with bias is unfair. They are entirely different stories with different elements. (Also FYI Percy Jackson WAS NOT inspired by Harry Potter. First of all, PJO is inspired off of greek mythology. And the main villan is from greek mythology. Also there is a great prophecy because prophecies were a huge thing back in ancient Greece. Second the reason Rick came up with Percy Jackson was because of his son. He told his son the stories in greek mythology until he ran out, so his son told him to make one up. Thus, Percy Jackson was born. Third in the context of Percy Jackson, a lot of the stuff I mentioned earlier make sense in this world. They are directly tied to the mythology and how it works in today's world. For example the mentor is from an actual myth and is a well known mythical being. Another example is the prankster brothers are pranksters because of their parentage. It works as a vessel to display some characteristics of the actual god himself. Same goes for the smart female main character. Also a camp for demigods makes complete sense. Also how people are placed into each cabin is perfect. It makes complete sense. Also the fact that unclaimed children are put in the Hermes cabin sets up several important plot points. (I wont go into detail as this comment is already super long.) Fourth they are both great series respectively, so it's okay to prefer on over the other. But there is no reason to disrespect one because you prefer the other. (I'm not claiming that you are doing that btw, its just something I wanted to say)

I just feel so disappointed in JK Rowling... She was in inspiration for me. I hated reading books before HP and later learning about her made me want to study literature in college. She was a big figure in my life, but so are some people that have passed in my life that I saw suffer because of transphobia and I just can't stand by JK anymore. I'm actually going through a crisis right now seeing a person I admired so much and defend so much fall so low in my eyes. I feel desolate, but Harry Potter is something I'll never stop loving. I totally feel this. The irony is that HP was my safe place whilst I was coming to terms with my gender identity. I would always say, okay so everything in my life is changing, but at least I have HP as my one constant. I'm thankful for the way fans have reacted and united over this, it's caused so much grief. But we will always have the books and people to talk to about them who are more open-minded than the actual author. We have each other and that's what matters.

quite honestly i would recommend getting into the percy jackson fandom now for a number of reasons 1. the new series on disney+ is going to be incredible as the author is coming up with the majority of the big decisions 2. this fandom is one of the most welcoming to newcomers, and the majority actually respect the opinions of others even if they don't agree with them which is more than i can say for some other fandoms 3. the author is still actively writing continuations to this series as well as other series that still connect to the original (percy jackson and the olympians started it all but after that directly came the heroes of olympus and trials of apollo, with side series such as the kane chronicles and magnus chase which have the same good feeling but with different characters and mythology that still somehow correlates to the og characters) 4. it would be best to do it now and not before the series comes out, because despite the second reason, it may be similar to what happened with Avatar the Last Airbender where some people hate on people who come to the series just because it is know mainstream or something 5. the movies are garbage and the fandom as a whole collectively agrees on this

DragonFang 409 It is and it isn’t urban fantasy if that makes sense, it takes place in the current world but it connects the world of the ancient Greek gods and heroes so in dome instances they are fighting monsters in an urban setting, other times they are fighting them in an Ancient Greek setting or in a setting where the Ancient Greek setting from a story is modernized in a way (like Chiron now trains heroes at a summer camp instead of at a cave) the series is really good and one of my favorites and I think you’ll enjoy it especially if you like Greek Mythology

I was really scared for a few minutes since I'm trans and i was scared one of my favorite creators was going to turn out transphobic but I'm so happy and relieved on what he said Thank you Seamus Edit: people are entittled to their own opinions, but when they are reinforcing an idea that ends up getting people killed, they shouldn't share it, especially if you have a platform as big as JK's. I can't help what she believes but at least keep it in the down low, like Seamus said, she has a lot of impresionable fans who might end up doing something they might regret, example, a few months ago a trans woman was killed for laughs in my country. What I'm getting at, her comment isn't violent and what she is saying isnt all that uncommon to hear, but the thing it conveys can end up leaving someone dead.

I dont agree with with your lifestyle as the Bible says God made man and women and he made you perfectly from birth and you changing it is against my religion BUT I'm not aggresive against you guys like some Christians are because the bible also says to love all neighbors and be kind no matter what religion sex or race so we can find a middle ground and respect each other as people and every one has an opinion and that's jk Rowlings we are entitled to them and she has a right to believe them as you have a right to disagree should she have attached trans women no but she is trying to go with what the bible says as she is a Christian but made a few mistakes because we are all imperfect and all people can agree with that no matter what religion sex or race we are broken people
