In this video, Sarai will show you how to sew a shell tucked hem using the Orlando shirt as an example (www.seamwork.com/catalog/orla....
The littlest detail can make the biggest difference in your sewing. Adding a decorative hem seems simple enough, but the impact really makes your garment stand out. A shell tuck hem is the kind of detail that transforms the neckline and hems of your sewing projects, and it’s effortless to sew. A classic vintage detail that doesn’t add a lot of extra work? Sounds perfect.
So what is a shell tuck hem? It’s a decorative hem with a bit of a vintage touch, also called a scallop or picot hem, because you’re creating little scallops by stitching on and off the edge of your fabric. This means you can create it with a simple sewing machine stitch.
This little detail works well on delicate, sheer fabrics, but it's also great on knits. You’ll often see it on childrenswear, but its vintage vibe makes it great for a bunch of different styles.

This was great, I just finished a pair of pjs for my granddaughter the other day. so I quickly followed your video….testing first on a scrap and then did it on the hem of the top and it turned out beautiful.

this is great Sarai! I have always thought that French designed clothing included these kinds of little "upgrades" in style - like yokes in the front or back of tops and dresses, lace collars and tucks and/or gathers in the front. All fairly easy to do and make such a difference. Yes, please present more of these kinds of tutorials.

I love this. In design your wardrobe I identified that I need some T-shirts (without sayings on them) and I just got done listening to your podcast on changing up your patterns. Made a couple of samples of this for reference. I will definitely do this on a t-shirt or two.

I had no idea how this was done! I'm doing Design Your Wardrobe right now since I just joined and missed the most recent and don't want to wait until the next one. My theme is all vintage so this is perfect for me!

Love this! Could you add this to binding before you sew onto your garment?

Since this stitch isn't stretchy, we'd recommend adding it after the neckline binding is attached!
