Sean Casey's Cummins-Powered Tornado Intercept Vehicle (TIV2) Prepped for Storm Season

Filmmaker and professional storm chaser Sean Casey was set to start work on the sequel to his IMAX film "Tornado Alley" when a chance meeting with a Cummins representative led to a partnership to prepare the Tornado Intercept Vehicle known as TIV2 for the adventure. Cummins took TIV 2 in for repairs during the month of April 2012. This video provides an overview of TIV 2, "The Dog House," and Sean's work on his movie and a National Science Foundation project to probe the inner workings of tornadoes.

TV shows paint people in the light they need to paint them in, in order to get the mosat viewers. IE< create drama from nothing and remind them they signed contracts with DIscovery

Even in one season, they try to paint Dr Wurman as if he didn't care about TIV, and even try to compromise their mission when he lead Vortex 2. To the point he even got hate messages online. In reality, no one is against each other. Unfortunately Discovery seems to push drama when it came to their shows.

This makes me love my 08 2500 that much more...I've got the 6.7 though I wonder if the tiv or the 5.9 have the jake brake like the 08? Would be a really good benefit for these heavy load situations...only downside is the dpf b.s. (its a must to delete) and you need a adj track bar to prevent deathwobble above 55... major issues once corrected = great truck I see that in comments tiv has 6.7 have you had any of the above issues?

Yes. It was placed in the outflow of a commercial jet engine for a Mythbusters episode; It survived currents of 250 MPH+ although it did result in the anchor spikes being bent slightly. The team that designed it did a very good job. Reed Timmer's 'Dominator' also withstood it well.

They went through a likely EF5-equivalent tornado on May 27th, 2013 without much issue. The anemometer atop the TIV measured 180 mph winds before being ripped off. It's safe to say winds probably got higher afterwards.

check out the footage they got yesterday! Never seen anything like it, at one point some animal or something hits the tiv and then towards the end something nails the window in front and sparks.look up tiv2 wedge tornado and you should find it.

they dont necessarily plan to take it inside the tornado around debris cause clearly if another vehicle landed on it there'd be damage. that being said it's basically a tank so im sure a few hits of large debris doesnt do much to it

It needs that angled low profile design with little airflow underneath it. That's what gets things up in the air, the flow. The anchors also help.

It's a unit of a vehicle the only thing saving it is the hydraulic spike system and in my opinion it should dig deeper. If it couldn't anchor it would be just another death trap getting lobbed into the air and everyone inside would be dead.

Why not build it off of an 18 wheeler chassis instead of a truck or SUV. That's probably why most episodes of storm chasers show the TIV in it's natural habitat stuck in a ditch because the engine died. Bigger chassis thicker armor and more space for radar equipment. You can add an engine and more armor in the back.

weight alone is not the issue. i can make something 1lb that will not be picked up by a tornado (a flat cone made out of steel for example). Its really aerodynamics but in a nutshell, the more area you have perpendicular to the wind the worse it will be. A tractor trailer is pretty much the worst case scenario. its large, flat and edgy

The only way that I know of to see that is through the IMAX locations.... tornadoalleymovie dot com is his legit site. Then click on Theaters and find your state. I doubt that there is a physical tape or disc that you can buy like the other IMAX films...
