This is crazy. I went to New World with Sean. He was my best friend in 11th grade and I wasn’t the type to have friends I was close to. He turned me onto Joe Satriani when the Surfing With The Alien album Came out. We both saw Joe when he came to Ft. Lauderdale in 1989. I video taped Sean when he first started Cynic. The show was at the Cameo theater on Miami Beach in 1988. I’ve got the VHS tape. Maybe I should upload it to KZbin. I don’t know if he would want that. Not that it wasn’t great but I just don’t know how he’s fee about that. I was on Gearslutz today and accidentally found myself on the RIP page when I saw Sean’s name. I guess I was thinking about Lyle Mays at the time; another great musician gone way, way too soon. I can tell you Sean was a heck of a person; funny, smart and a dedicated musician who had a wide palette in musical taste. I respected him as a person and as a musician. I’m just really blown away by his passing. I’ll never forget him. RIP my friend.

@@snail415 Thanks man. Back in those days, we were in school with some bad ass cats. Dudes that went on to win grammys and more. Despite being in a genre that wasn’t respected by the conservatory paradigm, Sean knew what he was after was so technically difficult that they would one day understand. In the face of the “Jazzers” clique, which can be intimidating, he applied himself and showed he wanted to compete. He was driven and man what a sound he created. I’m so glad people revere him. I think he was a maverick and deserves to be heralded past his living years if not for just his prowess but the fact he had the courage and drive to manifest the dream.

Grateful I got to meet him & see him live. I was 18 in 1990-91 and a mutual friend took me to their rehersals...warehouse in Miami. Saw them at the Thrash Can in Miami around that time. Anyway, I remember seeing Sean playing drums for the first time and it blew my mind. I was thinking he was the most talented, amazing drummer I'd ever seen or heard. To me, it's like he becomes one with the drums. He was probably 18 or 19 then, I think. He was so humble and genuine. RIP, bro. Looking foward to seeing you play again. ✌️😇🥁🎶🌌😊

Possible the most under-rated drummer who ever lived. When I see list of best drummers, he's not there, he is one of the greatest ever, listen to him, he understands how the instrument should be played, he can play very complex odd time signature grooves yet has that propensity to just pull you in to just jam to a song. Sean was a genius of the instrument.

I can clearly remember, back in 2009 when I first heard Traced in Air album and was immediately blown away by you, Sean. Tomas Haake of Meshuggah once said in an early interview, how he thought that Cynic is an awesome band and worth checking out so I did and thanks to Tomas I discovered Sean's playing for myself and haven't looked back ever since. Sean - you are absolutely incredible on your instrument and I have transcribed many songs from Cynic discography. I love your approach that builds an inspiring bridge between jazz fusion and prog metal drumming. Never heard anything like your playing/music and can not thank you enough for that. It is sad that the new Cynic line-up will have a different drummer, but I wish you the best of luck for your future musical endeavours. Tight playing in this video and hope you continue playing/writing awesome music like you have always done Cheers man

Rauno Pella when i first heard materials from a violent sleep of reason, i thought the compositions has striking similarity to cynic stuffs. For me, meshuggah is tool+cynic+steroids

I first heard him on the human album but when I discovered "how could I?" And then noticed it was from 1993, I realized how ahead of their time these guys were and that I had possibly just discovered where it all began. I couldn't believe that was over 20 years ago. I didn't know who Sean was until today but I will share my knowledge of him for the rest of my life because he really is amazing. What he does with that snare and the cymbals and the way he makes everything so catchy just blows me away. Not to mention what his feet are doing the whole time. So sad that I had no idea who Cynic was until like 2018-2019 but I'm glad I discovered them.

As a drummer, I have a list of drummers that inspire me immensely and many that push me in evolving into, not only, a better drummer but a better musician as well, but you are among one of the most remarkable of them all. Every single time I hear what you have recorded on an album or a video on KZbin, I am always drawn to your position in the composition. Granted everything else within each song is pretty cool as well, but your drumming always has some feeling and, better yet, soul to it. Unlike many drummers, I notice that you are so loose in your playing, a perk in which I wish I could master. I can never get enough of it, especially those live drum cams filming you playing with Death (awe-inspiring footage). You know I could go on and on explaining about how awesome you are as a drummer and as a person (according to your interviews), but I can always say that you will always have a major impact in my playing as a drummer. Above all, thank you for your contributions to music.
