Rukiya Anpo had until recently been playing with bigger players than Strickland. Anpo has the guts to go up against anyone without worrying about size or weight difference.
@GustavoHeinlein
@GustavoHeinlein 2 ай бұрын
Well, let's not get carried away. Anpo had protective head gear on, plus Strickland had heavy padded gloves - so yes Anpo looked spirited, but without the head gear, some of those blows from Strickland (who was not giving 100%) would have annihilated him! I find it astonishing and some what comical that everybody kind of didn't see Anpo was wearing protective head gear to soften the blows, so yeah - he fought well with EXTRA body protection and Strickland fought naked.

I can't believe this wasn't mentioned very early on. That is a straight up phonebooth cage. The two amateur MMA fights I had in 2006/2007 were in bigger cages than that. That cage looks like it's about 12 feet from one side to the other. The smaller cage that the UFC uses for Apex cards and that they used back when they would go to smaller venues is 25 feet. I wish that one was the permanent cage used everywhere there's more finishes. Strikeforce used a 26' cage. Primary UFC cage is 30'

@@josephdover198 you know what? From just a viewing perspective your telling me a 25 ft cage = more finishes? Then i agree with you. I hate 25 min games of tag or struggle snuggling for the same amount of time so, yeah, 25 sounds like a good number if it means more finishes.

People should check out the full video at Anpo's channel. It's really neat to see. Lots of respect and the subtitles are pretty good, Anpo was very grateful and this gave him a lot of confidence that he was lacking. It was supposed to be kickboxing I think but he injured his shin. He's a good 180lbs here at 6', so like a Nate Diaz. Anpo said his face never looked that bad after a fight before. haha, Sean got a little sloppy at the end but he was just trying to smack the gloves away from Anpo's face. Sean was throwing heavy at times but you could see him back off. Anpo was in survival mode and digging deep with with hardest shots basically every round. Props to him. His movement looked great but Sean just has fighting dialed in so well. All the fat is trimmed in Sean's fighting..the way he pressures and keeps his back from the cage and conserves his stamina, nothing is wasted. Fighting to Sean is like mowing the lawn and sparring to him is like..vacuuming the carpet. Just a prediction, when Sean retires he'll have a TV show where he travels the world and spars fighters of different cultures.
@HiddenStr3ngth

Nah, man, if you listen to the kids - Anpo was 150lbs and Strickland 200lbs. At least, if not more. "Sean was throwing heavy at times but you could see him back off" - Yeah, he backed off many times and gave Anpo space to work. Would have been cool to see the kickboxing spar though.
@josephdover198
@josephdover198 2 ай бұрын
@@HiddenStr3ngth Strickland is in fact heavier than 200 pounds. Pretty much anyone fighting in the 185 division is over 200. You have 170 pounders that walk around that heavy. Strickland is drastically heavier now than when he was a kid fighting down at 170. He looks every bit of 210-215 which makes sense why he looks so miserable during his morning weigh ins. However Anpo HAS to be at least 175 to 180 here. He's not you average Japanese midget that dominates the absurdly light weight division like 122 lbs.

It's his endurance, not his power. Acting like he's aggressive is the biggest con ever mentioned about him. He doesn't knock out people. He is all arm and jabs. @josephdover198
@josephdover198 2 ай бұрын
Yeah there's definitely a weight difference but you aren't even close to what each of them weigh. The Japanese guy cuts a lot of weight to compete in these 145-155 pound fights and that was when he was younger and naturally smaller. Strickland cuts a lot of weight for 185 that's why he looks like he wants to die during those morning weigh ins. The weight difference probably is around 40 pounds but it's about 175 vs 210 or so. This Japanese cat isn't some midget and he's a professional fighter.

If you look at Floyd Mayweather’s exhibition bouts with Nasukawa Tenshin and Asakura Mikuru and compare them with his other exhibition bouts, the Japanese fighters take it seriously due to their honor being at stake, even looking a little bad makes them feel embarrassed. Shows you how important it is to manage your energy expenditure, Sean wasn't even breathing much at the end but Rukiya was panting like he just run a 400 meter sprint. Lots of lessons to learn from this, I love it.

you nailed it. Strickland's opponents defeat themselves. His style is like nothing we've ever seen & it's 1 of 1. I remember him saying he used to get punched by one of his good friends until he learned how to eventually counter it & this style developed out of it. Incredibly effective & I love it. There's not a single person who can out box him in MMA right now. You have to threaten him with wrestling like Kamaru did for you to land anything

Would be very intrigued to hear your perspective on this: I think Volk in his last fight against Holloway really demonstrated how to play against pressure fighters, whenever Max came forward with pressure, Volk would stand his ground and throw clean and powerful combinations, and he would use that defensive to then step forward and put some counter pressure on Max. I love watching pressure fighters work and also thinking about the way to combat that kind of style.

Do you guys think Anpo going hard is bad sparring etiquette? I think when some “random” guy comes into a gym and asks to sparr one of the fighter, he can’t really expect to get a light sparr. I believe it’s not totally uncalled for, that Anpo put some power in his punches. But I’m interested in what you think.

That's what fighting is, who can out last the other person, that's why stamina is so very important in a FIGHT, who can endure the struggle, and Strickland understands this. In a boxing match or MMA it's pretty much equal in the beginning, until whoever gets tired first, they will lose because they can no longer perform the technique correctly, their body can no longer "fight"

I understand why Anpo went hard.. Stricklands call out could easily have been perceived as disrespect. Maybe he'll think twice before calling out Japanese fighters again. PS The reason for Anpos poor cage awareness is probably because kickboxers usually fight in a ring.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the UFC, and I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that this footage lead to his signing. He’s a good fighter, he’s very talented, he has great skills and a great build for MMA, he has a build that could fight him at 145, 155, 170. I’d try to fight at 145 in the ufc if I were him, that division is wack, they need talent.
