Also, I think a lot of the Middle Eastern influence on rock guitar came from Dick Dale, who was from Lebanon, and learned to play music on the oud - the lightning fast picking, the "exotic" scales, he took those to the guitar and voila, surf rock was born...

This scale is quiet common In metal music because it sounds dark and obscure, but the real middle eastern scale has a lot of quarter notes. Check out Dave Murray's power of stratocaster video, he does a mind blowing performance of this scale

The Phrygian minor second is super common in metal because it's like a topsy-turvy dominant function, pulling back down to the root hard *and* having a stank dissonance. For an awesome modern take on quarter-tones and maqams, check out Flying Microtonal Banana by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard.

Side note: "Frame By Frame" by King Crimson inspired Tool, and therefore Adam Jones, when making Forty Six & 2. Listen to it. They straight up ripped them off but in a good way. Danny Carey said it in an interview once. That whole Discipline album is something they listened to a lot.

Tool HAVE used Tablas & even sarangi in their songs before, so they CLEARLY have the eastern influence running through what they do! & while MANY bands use "Exotic" scales & time signatures ,Tool sneaks them in,but manages to do so in a way that seems so natural & really makes their sound what it is! Growing up listening to a lot of various stuff from India & the middle east ,alongside various rock,I am often drawn to bands like Tool, who know how to have a bit of the fusion thing going, without it coming across in a cheesy fake way which some bands have done with fusions.

Unfortunately I would say this is a case of hearing zebras not horses. Adam jones is using D phrygian which contains the minor second, solely relating that interval to the double harmonic major scale doesnt bring much weight to the claim that there is a connection between tool and aladdin. Not only is the minor second interval naturally occuring in western scales (phrygian & locrian) but it isnt even the defining feature of a double harmonic major scale, that would be the two 1 1/2 steps from the 2nd to the 3rd and the 6th to the 7th.

Awesome man!!!!! ........ ...... ... but I play keyboard so it’s a bit difficult for me to understand the notes, guess it’s the same with others players of a keyboard, so a suggestion......... how about a Video edit with the letters like E, G etc floating on the screen, that would make it easier to remember the valuable content. But really..... your doing great brother. 😊

@seandaniel23
@seandaniel23 5 жыл бұрын
Of course I do! But neither of them have a major third in there, which is an important concept for the lesson. (unless you get into modes of Phrygian dominant)
@Integralsouls
@Integralsouls 5 жыл бұрын
I mean it’s not only tool that uses Persian scale or rather Phrygian dominant..... the whole metal genre is tilted towards this mode nd it’s quite common thing....not something very special .all though I must admit it sounds awesome nd exotic
