Also, I think a lot of the Middle Eastern influence on rock guitar came from Dick Dale, who was from Lebanon, and learned to play music on the oud - the lightning fast picking, the "exotic" scales, he took those to the guitar and voila, surf rock was born...

Tool HAVE used Tablas & even sarangi in their songs before, so they CLEARLY have the eastern influence running through what they do! & while MANY bands use "Exotic" scales & time signatures ,Tool sneaks them in,but manages to do so in a way that seems so natural & really makes their sound what it is! Growing up listening to a lot of various stuff from India & the middle east ,alongside various rock,I am often drawn to bands like Tool, who know how to have a bit of the fusion thing going, without it coming across in a cheesy fake way which some bands have done with fusions.

Unfortunately I would say this is a case of hearing zebras not horses. Adam jones is using D phrygian which contains the minor second, solely relating that interval to the double harmonic major scale doesnt bring much weight to the claim that there is a connection between tool and aladdin. Not only is the minor second interval naturally occuring in western scales (phrygian & locrian) but it isnt even the defining feature of a double harmonic major scale, that would be the two 1 1/2 steps from the 2nd to the 3rd and the 6th to the 7th.
