The concept behind The Mission is actually really interesting. It's begging to be converted into a speed running game with a set of single player and coop levels. I reckon it could win over a lot of the people who are into mini golf games by making the focus on executing a chain of targeted shots and using the movement mechanics to get over obstacles and progress through the levels. It's clearly hampered by needing to recreate the advert, but it has potential.

fyi the increased localisation difficulty for NA releases was typically because of the rental market, to stop players being able to beat a game and return it within the rental window.

Highly doubt because used game stores(FuncoLand) with return windows were a thing.

The only evidence I've found for the increased difficulty being directly because of rentals is an interview where they mentioned they added the monkeys puzzle in lion king because of it on orders from Disney but that was in 1994. While many people claim it as fact for games before this. Personally in the UK I only remember Blockbuster renting out games from about 1993 onwards, I remember because when they started I got a giant promo poster for the NES Pac-Man game that just came out.
@corintibbetts-harlow80212 ай бұрын
@@trailersic I think the main question you need to ask in the absence of definitive proof is why? Why make such a drastic change to the difficulty of a game for a localised release, or more pertinently, how would making such a change be worth doing so to the publisher in a real financial sense? Given this particular game sounds like it could be very short if you were able to breeze through it with no difficulty, it's a fair assumption that dissuading rentals was the motive for the change.
@trailersic2 ай бұрын

The Mission reminds me there is a licensed football game for Gameboy Advance called Go! Go! Beckham: Adventure on Soccer Island that is a 2D platformer where you, as David Beckham, have to shoot a football at point items and eventually shoot it into a ring at the end of each level. All the enemies in the game only ever try to take possession of the ball from you. It is impressively committed to the idea of what a Beckham mascot platformer would play like. Though unfortunately it is easy to the point of feeling like they didn't wring all the juice they could out of the idea, but still! very cool.

Rumble Racing is one of my favorite 'kart racers' ever. Cars feel good to drive, great power up balancing, and the tornadoes are HUGE. It does feel like a game with it's license stripped off. I never heard of Nascar Rumble as a kid, but this game felt like an unofficial sequel to Hot Wheels Turbo Racing with it's airborne trick system and car designs feeling like off brand fantasy Hot Wheels cars. Also the vibes are very American Choro Q HG2 box art.

Oh cool, new video with juuuuuuuust enough time to watch it before work. Perfect timing! Love your videos, always good to find new obscure games to try, and the PS1 is one of my favorite consoles of all time. Edit after watching part of the video: Thank you for highlighting the issues with the gameplay changes in Working Designs games. I can tolerate the localization style, although I don't particularly like it, but the gameplay changes are awful. Since most folks are likely to be emulating these games, though, I feel I should mention the "Un-Worked Designs" series of patches that revert the gameplay changes to about a dozen of WD's releases. Unfortunately, Elemental Gearbolt is not one of them, but the patches do cover a decent bit of their catalog.

10:40 That reminds me of the TWEWY games. Though that one revolves around reward drop-rate vs health, I think it's a similar principle of rewarded self-imposed difficulty. I'd like to pick a simple slider over the more conventional Easy/Medium/Hard or story/developer-intended/"hardcore". I do welcome recent games having a myriad of difficulty options too, but self-balancing can itself be a challenge. (some, like MISTOVER (RIP), even lets you be immune to each status of your choosing. Could you imagine playing Pokemon with the option of removing poison and/or freeze?).

YESSS SPACE DEBRIS MY GAME WAS PROVIDED BY THE WHEEL !!! Thank you for reviewing this game, it was very interesting to have your point of view! To give a little context I had bought this game for not much a long time ago, honestly I did not expect anything from this game, especially having never played Starfox. When I launched the game, at first I didn't like it, mainly because of its high difficulty, but also for the progression system which requires you to start all the levels from the beginning if you lose. However I understood that this is where all the genius of Space Debris lies, since by starting everything again, you gradually improve and you have less trouble finishing the levels previously played, which makes it easier to progress. The gameplay with its upgrade system on five levels and the use of secondary shots is awesome. Not to mention the production of the game is just superb! I found the game too hard at first, and then I ended up finding the gameplay absolutely addictive, with impeccable production and a very interesting challenge! Reaching and beating the final boss was an extremely rewarding experience ! Regarding your review, I agree with you on several points, but the use of the basic laser and secondary missiles never bothered me, and for the repeating environnements, frankly I hadn't even noticed because I was so into the game, now that you say it it's true. I totally agree about the bosses, they are awesome! And I had forgotten the credits with the developers included! Definitly a GAME FOR YOUR SYSTEM haha I liked it Also, I was maybe expecting this review to answer a mystery that I never understood: how to unlock hard mode?? Did you manage to do it? Now that my game has been chosen, I will choose Buggy as my new game, can you tell me if it has already been chosen by someone else ? Thank you again !
@SeanSeanson2 ай бұрын
Thanks for your suggestion and the info! Hope you enjoyed the review :) As far as the hard mode, I believe you need to get gold medals on all 10 levels on medium difficulty which is a VERY hard thing to do, especially since it needs to be done in a single run. Bit out of my skill/paintence range haha Oh Buggy! Nice choice, I was only looking into that recently, seems like a perfect game for the channel and one that nobody has chosen yet, so keep your eyes peeled in future :) Thanks again!

@@SeanSeanson Of course I ejoyed the video as all the others, even more so when it reviews a game that I choose ! :) Makes sense that the hard mode could be unlocked with full gold medals obtained, which is also something that my patience couldn't handle, even if I loved the game. I knew Elemental Gearbolt was a light gun shooter but I was not expecting it to be super anime! That opening was a lot, haha. Such a gorgeous aesthetic, though. And wow, the music! I'm one of those people who is not super fond of Working Designs just 'cause their style is way too goofy for me. But you're 100 percent right that without them we wouldn't have an easy way to play a bunch of neat and interesting games. The difficulty stuff is super annoying, though, even with the rental excuse. I had never heard of The Mission (or seen the ad) but, like, wow! I love how delightfully goofy the idea is. The execution? Ehhhh... At least the legally required good PAL music is there, haha. It's a shame the easier difficulties in Nascar Rumble are so wonky and unbalanced 'cause everything else looks like it'd be nice and chaotic. It's probably a little TOO chaotic for me (CTR is about my limit, haha) but yeah, seems like good fun. Space Debris looks pretty fun but more than anything is making me realise I should really get around to playing Star Fox 64, haha. The little robot friend in the intro is pretty cute though! Thanks a bunch for the video and I hope y'all have been doing well! Always appreciate these videos. Sorry for the long comment as well, just couldn't stop typing, haha.
