Great first reaction and welcome to the BABYMETAL Galaxy. BABYMETAL are Su-metal (now 23) and Moametal (now 21) - the third original member, Yuimetal, sadly left the band in October 2018 having been absent from the stage for the previous 12 months. She had ongoing (and undisclosed) health issues and had not fully recovered so was still unable to perform, so she announced she would be leaving the band and hoped to follow her own long held dreams. Since the start of the 2019 tour Su and Moa have been supported by three dancers (the Avengers) who take turns to dance in the third spot (they do not have any vocals so far). They are Kano, Riho and Momoko. They started in 2010 as a sub-unit of a J-Pop Idol group when Su was 12, Yui and Moa were both 11 and they have recently celebrated their 10th anniversary. At the start they had no budget from their agency, this was the pet project of just one man (a lifelong metalhead with a great love and respect for metal) based entirely around the vocal talents of Su-metal the lead singer who thought her vocals too powerful for pop and that she could front a metal/pop fusion band. They were never expected to last more than a year or two until it would be time for Su to leave the Idol group, there was no audience for them, it was just an experiment their producer was allowed because there was no financial risk to the agency, so it came as a huge surprise to everybody when they started to gain an audience and became so popular that they outgrew the parent Idol group. Their backing band are the Kami Band. Kami means god or spirit, so they are the gods of guitar bass and drums sent to support BABYMETAL in all their live shows. In reality they are some of the very best session musicians to be found in Japan and they can play anything. They were phased in gradually as more money was made available and in anticipation of BABYMETAL separating from the Idol group in 2013, so the Kami Band first appeared in October 2012 and from then they played a couple of festivals and encores in some shows. They became the full time backing band early in 2014. If the musicians in a video are wearing skeleton suits they were miming the instruments to a backing track - they were called 'Babybones' and were there for show (no pretence was made otherwise, everybody knew what they were doing, but there was no budget for a live band in the early days). The Kami Band are the ones in traditional white burial robes and white corpse face paint (more recently in black robes and now wearing masks). For the 2019 and 2020 US and European tours the Kami Band of the west (American musicians from Galactic Empire on guitars and bass, Anthony Barone once of Shadow of Intent on drums) were introduced. 'Catch Me If You Can' is the perfect blend of brutal metal instrumentation with the sweet vocals and cute choreo. They are actually playing a game like hide & seek or tag with an Oni (a sort of Japanese ogre). The growling vocals (they are on a backing track along with any additional instruments like synth or piano etc) are the Oni asking things like "Are you ready?" and the correct response has to be "Maada da yo" (No, not yet) while doing a running away from an Oni dance. They have about 50 songs now and every one of them is different. Some are very metal, others lean more towards their pop roots and they do everything in between. They have songs in virtually every metal genre (thrash, djent, black, death, power, speed, folk, prog etc) but they will blend in other musical styles and genres with the metal (not just pop, you will find ska, reggae, Bollywood, Latin, rap, hip hop and so many more) often when you least expect it - and they make it work. Apologies for the wall of text. 'Megitsune' is the song I would normally recommend for a first watch - the official video is very good, but BABYMETAL are a live performance act - so for you I'd say take your pick, either the MV or a live performance (live at Budokan Black Night is a good version).

Here is a little bit of BABYMETAL info...In 2019, BABYMETAL became the first Asian artists to hit #1 on BILLBOARD's Top Rock Albums chart with their latest album, "Metal Galaxy" and a few months ago it was announced that the album won the MTV Japan VMA 2020 award for BEST ALBUM OF THE YEAR. BABYMETAL has been melting faces for TEN years. Su, the lead singer, is currently 23 years old, while Moa and Yui are 21. Yes, they were very young when BABYMETAL was formed! BABYMETAL have performed with, toured, or opened for Metallica, Korn, Dragonforce, Guns N' Roses, Lady Gaga, Rob Halford of Judas Priest (there's a great youtube video of their performance with Rob at a metal award show), and Red Hot Chili Peppers (there is a youtube video of them performing Gimme Chocolate with RHCP, as well as with Korn, and DragonForce), to name a few of many. They have performed at large metal events/concerts in front of 65,000+ skeptical metalheads in Europe (Glastonbury, Download, Sonisphere, etc), US, and Asia. Plus the 20+ awards they have been given. They have 50+ songs and each one is different from the other, so I hope you give the other songs a try. Welcome to the Babymetal Galaxy - or the foxhole. I was worried when you stopped half way through and thought about trying to understand things as that's not really possible at first listen. There's the language and crazy musical and cultural mash up barriers to overcome. You did the right thing by just feeling and enjoying the performances, that's what the lead singer Su-metal says you should do. FYI the song is about children being chased by a Japanese ogre and there are some nice cultural references in the lyrics, one being to "Red Shoes" that means one thing to a Western listener and another to someone from Japan. Babymetal is full of these double meanings. Even the name is a play on Heavymetal as in Japanese that sounds like and is written almost the same as Babymetal. Babymetal have been around for a decade and many fans have followed them since their first KZbin releases around 2013/14. They have a big back story that has been created by their producer and agency Amuse and also have had some real life troubles with one member of the backing band dying and one of the girls leaving due to ill health...

Finally someone not starting with GImme Chocolate (although given your reaction to this, maybe you'd have liked it? Future reaction?)! Catch Me If You Can, CMIYC, is for me THE song that best encompasses what BABYMETAL'S unique and original genre, Kawaii Metal, is all about! Kawaii = Cute, so it's Cute Metal. Fitting, isn't it?! BABYMETAL are the pioneers of this, and while others have taken up the concept, no one does it like BABYMETAL! They so perfectly blend their cute and poppy side with their heavy metal side, and do it everytime while still blending in multiple other musical genres! It's actually amazing what they are capable of! Grington 300 300 (one of my personal BABYMETAL gurus), has left an literal wall of text on BABYMETAL 101, wonderful stuff as always(!!), so I'll skip all that and just say a few more things... You'll probably be wondering why we all are calling it the fox hole (instead of the rabbit hole) and you'll eventually notice that BABYMETAL have their own unique hand gesture, so I'll explain that here. While very similar to the traditional "devil horns" used for rock in general, the maloik sign, BABYMETAL actually use a variation where the pads of the middle and ring finger are pressed against the pad of the thumb. This creates the hand gesture of a fox (kitsune) in Japanese culture shadow play. When the producer showed the girls the horns, they mistook it for the fox sign. Some people say that this is where their lore of being chosen by the Fox God to spread metal back into the world started. Either way, since the Fox God is a big part of their lore, they ran with it! Lol! You'll see foxes in just about all of their shows and merch. For a suggestion, I'll back up either Megitsune or Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!... Usually, I'd send you right to the lives (live BABYMETAL is best BABYMETAL), but for Megitsune, I'll suggest the official MV as some of the live can spoil a certain part of the song that's a total WTF moment when listening to the studio version! Though I totally am down for you checking out the live version afterwards, maybe Budokan Black Night show (although I feel the Legend 1997 show best shows off the crowd)! For Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!! you can go straight to the live (Legend 1997 show is best), but the MV for it is worth a watch as well! Looking forward to more BABYMETAL! Kitsune dao! \m/

Sort of. :) It's a Japanese game and it's about not being eating by Oni which is a unique Japanese mythological creature that eats people especially children. It's the same game that is featured in 'The Promised Neverland' anime. That show is almost like a long version of this song but of course they're both based on the game. Running and hiding are both allowed.

@@autohmae I don't know what that means. I didn't know what Namahage is. I did a quick Google and it said it was a festival where they wear Oni masks. It seems to me that both the song and the festival are about Oni. Not that the song is referencing the festival. But there could easily be something I don't know about Namahage that makes it so. Like perhaps the game originated at the festival? Dunno. I'm certainly no expert on japan.

Babymetal has 3 full albums plus a small handful of covers, and just about every song is different from the others. So you have a lot to choose from. There are no bad songs and no bad performances. You might find some bad compilation videos however. As you have seen with Catch Me if you Can, it is wise to always choose live performance videos. You do not want to miss their live performances.

Great reaction! The part coming up at 4:11 made me laugh out loud. :-D Your smile and your comments prove that you totally get this band, which is not to be taken for granted. Their unique fusion of Metal and poppy, melodic tunes is a real delight. It takes some of the sometimes exaggerated seriousness, aggression and darkness out of Metal and replaces it with smiles, positivity and fun. And as you said, it can be a doorway to Metal for some people, which is one of their explicit goals. They cover a pretty broad spectrum, some of their songs lean more to the heavy side, some more to the playful side, but they are all great and entertaining. And Pop music is not the only genre they fuse with Metal, they also throw in some Waltz, EDM, Hip Hop, Dubstep, Reggae or Ska... The growls are on a backing track. EDIT: All Babymetal's songs are amazing. You literally can't go wrong with any of their songs, but make sure you go for the live versions, because even as great as their studio versions are, it's live that they really shine.

This started with the Kamiband and the 3 you ladies are Babymetal. They are the most famous and popular Japanese band in the world. They have sold-out the LA Forum, first Japanese band to play London's Wembley Arena breaking all records for band merchandise sold. The arena with all the people was Tokyo Dome capacity 55,000 that they sold-out 2 night running, different concert each night. 2020 was the 10 Year Anniversary, the ladies today are 23 and 21. They were 11 and 13 when they performed the 1st time as Babymetal. A more current MV is Pa Pa Ya, a popular early one is Megitsune and a live video Headbanger. This song was not even a single. But it's one of their best and i'm willing to die on that mountain. That is how good the average Babymetal song is. There were 5 singles/music videos off their first album and this wasn't one of them. Next up 'BxMxC' official. Even Japanese people think Babymetal is weird. They're very popular of course in Japan but there are bigger Japanese groups that are not popular outside Japan. They are the most international Japanese band. They have plenty of fans but they're not super famous in Japan.

babymetal is amazing!!! 50+ songs and counting, all great. i would recommend headbanger live @ legend 1997 or road of resistance. there's just soooo many....they just did a guest appearance on bring me the horizon's new album, the song is called kingslayer and there is good contrast between olie's vocals and su's.. its only a lyric video though.

You are in for the ride of your life, my friend! It would be very easy to list ten, or even twenty, songs by Babymetal that are at least as good as the one you just heard. The quality of their music is just outstanding, and extremely varied as well. In fact, it's hard to overstate just how diverse they are. Maybe it could be generalized as very heavy music with cheerful vocals, but even that vague description probably doesn't match more than half their songs. Normally I would suggest you give "Road of Resistance" a try next, but with you being a rapper, the obvious recommendation would be "BxMxC" (BabyMetal Cypher).

Their activities have been worldwide since 2014. In the latest world tours from June 2019 through March 2020 (until the pandemic started), they performed on stage 20 times in USA, 19 in EU/UK/Russia and 1 in Taiwan in addition to 15 in Japan. If you do search with keywords "babymetal 2019 forum" you will find a number of videos showing 17,000 American audiences going nuts at the Forum LA on Oct.11 2019. Next song? You are a rapper. What a way to land in Babymetal universe, with KAMI BAND solo on CATCH ME IF YOU CAN ^^. From the intro solo, girl's entrance, brutal verse, and happy chorus, what a trip indeed! They are visualizing playing hide and seek because that's the lyric was about. So it's playing hide and seek on death metal hahaha... This was one of the earliest Babymetal song to come out, circa 2012 on their first album. In it, you'll find prime examples of KAWAII METAL (their genre). Their second put more hold on metal music, and their third looked to expand metal. They do almost every sub-genre of metal, fused with almost every genre of music, which makes almost every song they do almost experimental. They put homage to their metal predecessor greats like METALLICA and X-JAPAN in their songs, and collaborate with some of them like DRAGONFORCE and BRING ME THE HORIZON. Samples of their work may include: - GIMME CHOCOLATE, a punkish thrashish track from their first album, a KZbin viral in 2014. - HEADBANGER, also a Babymetal classic from the first album which is still constantly performed on shows to the present. A good one in KZbin is the one performed during the LEGEND 1997 concert (2013). - And 40+ other ^^

Well your brain is working hard to try and make connections anyway :-) "popping over there" they are the highest album charting Japanese artist in the western world. Also known as the most world famous Japanese teenagers. :-) (well, not anymore, they are adults now). Also one of the most touring Japanese bands outside of Asia. The growls are on a backing/studio track, pretty certain it was recorded and manipulated. For the third album they have collaborations for adding that contrast. "it actually works." Yeah, chaos but their is real song writing going on. The first part however was just solos by the Kami band for the live show (to give the girls a rest !), it's not really part of the studio song. The happy vibe is a huge part of why people like Babymetal

Most of their newer live videos (performed after Budokan shows on March, 2014) are available on KZbin only as compilation videos (much better than this one though) because of the copyright issues. The growls are always on backtrack during shows. None of the girls would be able to pull those off and the Kami band (the session musicians) are focused on shredding on their instruments :). BABYMETAL has lots of small bits of backtracks here and there for sounds they can't pull off live. People are hoping though that one day they might add a keyboardist to cover most of the sounds like that live. They use a lot of synth here and there in various songs aswell so that'd be justified. Not to mention they also use piano notes for certain songs aswell.

Love Babymetal!! Saw them twice in 2019 including their first ever USA arena show at The Forum, but the only band I'll give a subscription for is another band from Japan, BAND-MAID!! The best "hard rock" band I've heard in 30yrs. The just released three new MV's for their new album Unseen World, but this band is at their best live, so I'd suggest Domination live,, recorded on 14 Feb 2020 @ Line Cube Shibuya.

Bwahahaha beware of what you ask for... In this case you are in for a wonderful ride with a fan base that is very welcoming and appreciates that even though you may not like all the Babymetal songs (highly unlikely) they will be courteous and still accepting. You were recommended a very good de-virginating song with the Kami band intro and extremely Babymetalish after. However, with their other songs do not expect the same concept musically, lyrically (though almost all have positive messages/themes), or especially musical genre. No spoilers here. Have fun. Try some early Babymetal - most online is from concerts, including official concert MVs. Try their official video for Megitsune, or something newer like PaPa Ya. 2 comments... firstly "What's going on here"? What is going on is a Japanese version of hide & go seek sung by teenaged girls heavy metal style with a disembodied demon growling in the background (in a nutshell) secondly as far as the audience size, when you mentioned it in the video, the clip was from their Tokyo Dome Black Night show, 50,000 in attendance, first night of a 2 night gig 110,000 total for both nights... BTW That is their best song overall IMO....
