My guy Russel Paul made the Sebastian KZbin channel lol 😂 - I love it. Russel indeed is a humble guy and is always challenging himself to become better. He doesn’t even consider himself to be all of that BUT HE IS. I’m humbled that I’ve witnessed him play a few times in person. He’s a beast on the pipe organ as well.

Yeah, the original vid was dope because he definitely used some out of the box voicings for a gospel song we all know. I work from home, but had to take a break and jump on the organ for this one 🤣

6:25 "What about that G minor chord? Doc, I think it could be the circle of 5ths. Russell uses the G minor as a 2-5 to get to F dominant (so it takes him to "Your peace..." which is Bb minor), but he doesn't play the C dominant chord to indicate he is going back to the F dominant. So normally it would be: G min 7(b5 if you want)->C7->F7->Bbmin7 (and the song continues normally). Instead, he goes: B->A->G min 7 - (C7 implied but not played, but the motive is to get to F) -> F7 -> Bbmin7. You're very right about the ear, and Russell uses his ear to shape his chord voicing so the G minor chord doesn't come out of nowhere (we have all done that before lol). Interestingly, that G minor chord happens just a bit after the melody has finished, so he doesn't clash. Simple yet effective, well very effective. I was waiting on you to do this video, learnt a few more things I didn't know!

I think the g minor chord can be seen as a variant of the 5th on key D#. Also the g is a 3rd on D#. So in the song. That particular point can be played as the 5th on C#. So I think he moved a full tone and substituted the 5th on D# for the fifth on C#. That's the same way Cory Henry usually changes key to create music. The g minor chord in tonic solfa is m on the left hand and r fe s t r on the right hand if you look at it on key D#.
