I hear you on the boots! Something about those steep hills that's really hard on them. I had some old boots that were in decent shape before 3 weeks around Fairburn and they're toast now. I wouldn't complain too much though. I'd rather be good at finding Fairburns than boots 😊 Thanks for taking us along!

Wow, those are a couple amazing finds! We like to use Keens but we don't put them through the same use as you do, not even close, so they work for us. I will say, however, that they definitely don't last as long as they did years ago. Seems like they make them cheaper so you have to buy them more often, that's with anything now days. Anywho, really enjoyed the video and congrats on the finds!

Might be late to the comments section but I would highly recommend Lowa boots. I have the Renegrades and have somewhere between 900 and 1000 miles hiking and backpacking on them in addition to wearing them daily for work. I had to repair one of the seams on each boot (same spot on each) with aquaseal this summer but other than that I have had them for 4 years with no issues other than replacing the laces and reapplying waterproofing. Can find them at REI or online.

I've had good luck with Keen boots WW. I wore a size 12 D at 50 and as I've aged my damn feet got bigger and flatter. Always could kill an ant with my instep. I'm 67 now and wear a 14 EE. I had to have safety shoes for work, but the Keen safety shoes were as comfortable as any other hiking boots I've ever worn and I didn't have to worry about smashing my toes. Something my clumsy ass always has to worry about. The nice thing about the Keens to me is that their sizing is consistent between models. Low tops, mid tops, high tops were all the same size advertised, comfortable, warm and needed almost no breaking in. Hell, I even bought sandals that lasted me 10 years before they finally came apart. Almost cried when they did. Like losing a good dog.😢
@waywardwoodward4 ай бұрын
@@RickSmith-kp3sy my last set of Keens only lasted about two months before I wore clean through the bottom of them. When I was looking at the new Keens a few weeks back, as I mentioned in this video, the tread on them is nothing I would prefer to have for a hiking boot. Sure if you’re in an office building or at work I get it, they’re comfy as heck but they’re not for the real world hiking situation that they imply that they’re for or that I need them for. It’s not my first rodeo with all these namebrands. I hike hundreds of miles a year across multiple states and wearing a few pairs clean through the bottoms in a year is just a starting point for a person like me. It just seems like they are all getting cheaper and cheaper made but charging more. Thanks for tuning in!
@RickSmith-kp3sy4 ай бұрын
@waywardwoodward I understand WW. Entirely different level user than you are. My apologies. I started my comment about Keen before I heard you talk about Keen and Merril. Talk about putting your boot in your mouth! I still miss my damn sandals though!

So do you find that most of the fairburns found on rocky slopes like that are found closer to the top or closer to the bottom of the slope?
@waywardwoodward4 ай бұрын
@@rockhoundingmidmo8873 I like to think I find em near the top more often, as that’s where they are eroding out from, but they all gotta roll down the slope at some point. One of my best ones last year was at the very bottom of a grassy hill that hardly moves, and it was just laying there all kinds of full face, like it had been there for ages.
