Second that motion for Cookshill. Davey I’m in Canada and the service is impeccable.

Halo Davie. Thanks for that. I contacted Veniards lately from Ireland - with a view to purchasing materials and was informed (like you say) by Phil Varney that they only Sell to Trade or Professional Tyers.

Brilliant idea for a video! I enjoyed that very much.

Thanks Davie, it certainly is a world of difference when it comes to searching for materials, I often get carried away when it comes to shopping online, my other half would also agree lol, thanks Davie all the best.

Great advice Davie sir we are also having too look for alternatives to certain materials now aswell I think because of rare and endangered animals I read a while ago that they are replacing peacock herl with a synthetic man made material Ive seen this material and it looks like something you would wrap around a christmas tree but in miniature,, for me you can't beat traditional materials

Here in the States I have to look around for my own sources. I did sign up for Fulling Mills mailing list, 'though. Thanks, Davie!

The price of materials has gone through the roof in recent times. I saw a tying video for a nice looking nymph using a thread with flash built in. It was £3.50 for a 25 metre spool. £14 for 100 metres! This has filtered down to preowned kits on eBay. Very few bargains any more. More so in the USA.

Great video. I wish Fulling Mill hook Numbering made someone to me. I’m sure their alpha-numeric scheme is based on some sort of sensible pattern but I can’t quite grasp it. 😂. Thanks Davie

Thanks. I've been wondering where to find Vineyard dyes here in the US. Now I know how to track them down. As much as I love the tying videos, these little talks between friends are fun and useful. Don't forget, a little trip through your library and historical books.😁

Hi Davie, thanks for all that you do, learned so much from you over the years. Was just looking around the Veniard website and wanted to know what varnishes you always use? We have a store in Calgary, Alberta that can order this in now. Thank you.
@DavieMcPhail Жыл бұрын
Hi Simon, I use the clear cellire varnish and their thinners as this will make it last far longer. I also buy their bottle with the brush as I prefer to apply the varnishing using the brush though I do trim it down to a tapered point....I have attached links for you to see... I really enjoy your videos and especially the ones involving tips and tricks. Can I ask you to consider a video on alternate materials for those of us who dabble in tying fully dressed flies and struggle to get suitable substitutes for feathers from birds which are now protected. I.E. What would you use? Keep up the good work.

If people are ordering from the states or possibly other places abroad you sometimes have to pay import tax costs as much as the materials
@DavieMcPhail Жыл бұрын
Hi Neil, If I order from the USA I need to spend more that £135 before I need to pay duty as far as I believe and if I buy from the EU it's only up to £39 before they charge you VAT which is 20%..I'm not sure how much you pay the other way round... All the very best Davie

When considering hook size do you also consider diameter size of the leader material you plan to use? I read an old rule that recommended the hook wire diameter should not exceed the tippet diameter. I hunt for bargain tying materials in craft shops and in cloth and sewing material shops. Hunters are good friends to have. Much of my materials are ones I save from waterfowl, game birds and game animals. Sadly, most of the feathers and hair is tossed away in the trash by hunters. It is easy to dry and preserve feathers and patches of hide with the hair on it.👍🤔🙂 It is common knowledge that many tying materials are sourced from China you buy as well as the pre-tied flies sold in fly-fishing shops.

Whiting & other quality hackles went insane for a while due hair dressers buying them up to include them in hairstyles. Thankfully, that trend ended & prices have dropped somewhat. Some items we see used by European tyers still are uncommon here in the US, but that is slowly changing. Veniards wax & other of their products are still a bit hard to find, but Fulling Mill products are becoming more available.

What tip would you give someone starting in "commercial tyer" when approaching compagnies for materials?
@DavieMcPhail Жыл бұрын
Hi Dominique, I was working for a small trout fishery so I got my trade account through them as I tyed the flies for the guests that came to fish the water though when I went self employed I sent the companies a letter with my letter head and card to show them I was tying for a living...They normally put you on a pro former so you have to pay upfront until they see how you get on..I hope this is of some help to you.. All the very best Davie

Hi Davie, in your experience how long would a wing or full skin stay in good condition. I don’t buy skins but have a number of wings. As I don’t tie volume, I’d hate to think they perish over time. I keep them in a draw in their packets. Any guidance gratefully received. Cheers
@DavieMcPhail Жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, I have skins and wings that I bought many years ago and they are still perfect, all I do is store them so that they keep dry and clean by just keeping them in a sealed bag and in large tubs..I also keep those small bags you get in electronic equipment to help this as well so never throw them away... All the very best Davie
