So I jokingly decided to google this question....and it came up with this: So you know how there is a war going on in stardew valley? And penny seems to be the only one who likes poppy’s?poppys can signify fallen soldiers. I saw a theory that her father sadly passed away when he went off to war. It got dark real quick.

Gunther is obviously the father. You see back in the 80s Gunther had a mullet and some hair got into his eyes. Pam then seduced him, and since he had hair in his eyes he could not see. That was how Penny was born.

Thoery Time Pam started out as a promising young lady and fell for a man she fancied, but this man was in fact an arsehole who ruined her life and trapped her in a loveless marriage. They then had a daughter called Penny who would end up living a horrible life in her early years and would retreat to the local library to get away from her abusive father, Pam obviously got a job driving the bus to get some alone time. Some time later Pam divoriced her husband but the years of abuse made her turn to drinking and the divorice left her almost penniless, hence why there is a an abandoned house in the forest that the mouse takes over. Pam then deciedes to buy a trailer so she and Penny can have somewhere to live, the result of this life made Penny shy and nervous making it hard for her to interact with people. This could explain her love for books and why she decieded to become the local teacher because school was another place where she could escape her father, this would go on to shape her into who she is today. Now then Pams habit of going to the Saloon might have stemed from her needing a place to go where she could feel safe and Gus being a good friend would obviously make sure that she can stay safe at the Saloon. Maybe he barred Pams husband from the Saloon and help her to file out the divorice papers needed to set her free.

So it always seemed weird to me that literally everyone in town either dislikes or downright hates poppies, yet it's one of Penny's favorite things. Why? Poppies are a symbol of fallen soldiers (At least in the UK and the US? Maybe elsewhere?), so maybe Penny lost someone in the war. Penny's father isn't in the story, only her alcoholic mother Pam. I mean wouldn't the loss of a husband be the kind of thing to drive a woman to alcoholism? And we know that there's a war going on, since Kent just got back. (My alternate theory is that Penny loves Poppies since she's a secret heroin addict, since addiction runs in the family.

Pierre's the father. His hair color is the one that looks the most like Penny's. When he learnt Caroline was cheating on him with the Wizard, he drowned his sorrows at Gus' saloon. Pam was (obviously) there, one thing led to another and Penny was conceived! Then he admitted to Caroline he had also cheated on her (without disclosing with whom) and they both agreed to pretend nothing ever happened and to never speak of both affairs ever again.

There is actually dialogue you can get that I got recently at around 6 hearts in Fall after having seen the heart event where Penny says "my dad left because he said he felt trapped" which means he isn't one of the townsfolk and thus the theory that Penny's dad is indeed the talking bear is very solid.

too sad you missed some dialog DF in the library at 7 hearts i got Penny to say "My father left us Years ago and we have never seen him since" (not a direct quote im writing this of off memory) and i read a comment here that actually sounds kinda possible, the war that happned in stardew valley years ago and the meaning of the poppy in the victorian flower language hinting to a fallen solider. Still the poppy could just be associalted with penny becoming successfull by getting married to you :D

I have a long theory. I think her father is a demon. Since we know that Stardew Valley has religion and a god, it would make sense that there is knowledge of them. It would explain how Penny isn't a beast like Pam, because demons can shapeshift. Penny's eyes also go red in her angry portrait, and as far as I know, the only other character with red eyes when they're angry is Abigail, who is the daughter of the wizard. Penny was also born in fall, which is the month when the veil in thinnest. Her demon father came from the demon world on the first day of fall, mounted The Pam, and Penny, being demon spawn, was born the day after. Pam was too drunk to notice, naturally. Penny, strangely, has red hair, despite her mother being a brunette, probably. You could even say her hair's... fiery red. Pam probably drew the demon to herself by being the unholiest thing in town, and because she was jealous of the non alcoholics, which makes Penny a creature born of envy, thus explaining why her eyes are green. Penny also has a dialogue about finding interesting things in the dirt if you dig. You know what else in under the ground? THE UNDERWORLD. Or potatoes. She could also just be Irish or smth

I Think its Gunther and I got some Proff 1.Penny is a nerd Just like Gunther :D 2.penny know there some cool stuff on the ground , maybe Gunther once told penny that there cool stuff on the ground 3.penny is somewhat a shy persona and if u dont know u cant socialor talk with him , everyone u can see in the relationship bar / menu but u cnat find Gunther , that mean u never meet him (also im using Game Logic ) 4.Gunther is not that rich and i think that one of the reason that Pam leave Gunther or pam is some what stealing Gunther Money, maybe pam just sold the gold artfiact or all of the artifact to buy beer , and the second reason might be pam driking problem but the second reason is not that strong cause maybe pam is depresed when Gunther left and then pam start to drink. 5.penny dont know who is her dad or penny just forget,cause all of penny dialog never said anything about her dad , so penny probly was a baby when Gunther left , cause there is no way that penny was still in pam belly cause if she did , she probbly have died cause of the beer that pam drinking. 6.if someone said hey gunther dont have red hair , well there is a chace that gunther relativ or pam relatic have red hair cause Red hair can skip a genaration. example , a person have red hair but there parent dont , but the granparent use to have red hair , that mean the red ahir Dna or something skip the parent generation . ( also im just assuming that penny have a red hair cause the wiki didnt tell penny hair color) 7.gunther probably teaching penny , becuse we all know pam didnt teach penny cause you know its pam Well that my theory , if u think u have nore proff comment below :D

Wheels was the one who first villager in stardew along with his wife, they lived a full life until they found the key to immortality. and since everyone is a snoop in this game, each person followed them to learn about this immortal life as it was suspicious they hadn't died yet. around that same time, the community center was no longer important and got forgotten over the many years. When your grandfather had learned about this secret, he refused to do it and wanted to die a natural life (or did he?). Since they are forever frozen in their age, their health can't get worse, but it can't get better, thus wheels and his wife started to look into getting electronic organs to live more comfortably, which would explain why they don't need sleep.

well, you do take note of the possibility of Gus due to the related dialogue, but penny does mention the mountain, which could hint to someone from the adventurer's guild. they deal with monsters daily; if anyone can deal with pam it would be them.

Penny definitely says at some point that her father left when she was still a child because he didn't want to be tied down to his family anymore. It's one of the reasons she wants to help Jas and Vincent and is so family-oriented herself, and it's why she gets upset if, during her 8-heart event in the forest, you tell her you don't want a big family tying you down either. Of course, now that I go looking for it, I can't find where or under what circumstances exactly she says this. So there's that.

Emily being the daughter of a dwarf would explain SO much! (Particularly as the 'dwarfs' are actually supposed to be survivors of an advanced alien race that crashed down to earth, had to live underground because they can't tolerate the brighter sunlight on this planet and gradually lost much of their culture over the following centuries. Emily definitely seems like she's from outer space... And for that matter even Haley is kinda spacey...) Maybe the parents who left them to go see the world when Haley was still in highschool are actually dwarfs then or one of them is and the other has a weird fetish. It would explain why Emily is clearly not expecting them back any time soon. They are not exactly the most reliable species in the game.

Ok, so, merging all of the comments below, here is my theory: Pam had a child with a man, and they were married. He had to go off to war, and he died- possibly working on a ship, as Pam hates squid for some reason. However, Penny says this line that directly states what happened: "When I was a little girl, my father abandoned us because he said he felt 'trapped'. We haven't seen him since. I'm sorry to make things uncomfortable for you... It's just that this time of year makes me think of it for some reason. Anyway... How's the farming life going?"
