Searching for the Good in Danny Phantom's “Worst Season”

I knew, I just knew that the new video essays on Danny Phantom that you were gonna make were going to be awesome. Honestly I can relate to so much of what you said, about Danny Phantom being such an integral part of your childhood and essentially being so prevalent in what you're accomplishing today. Revisiting the show and finding subtle nuances that makes you appreciate the show even more. And just finding comfort in the characters that are so great and lovable. Plus, among the hundreds of video essays on DP that I've seen over the years, the takes from the fandom on Tumblr and stuff, I was just so sad and disappointed because so many dunk on it yet say that they love it. Like that's not how it goes. The sheer amount of vitriol some characters get, and the hate for the third season, plus ridiculous headcanons that basically ruin so much of what makes the show special, really put me off of watching any more stuff from the phandom. But your videos...I love them. I revisit your video essay on the show a lot and it brought me so much joy to hear so many takes that I myself felt and haven't seen much of from the fans. This comment is gonna get a bit big, I hope you'll bear with me because I love your insight of the show and would love love love to just geek it out with you. You're absolutely right about how much there is to take from the third season and how there's so much character development on Danny's end. With Vlad's further deteriorating psychosis (I mean the entire cloning bit was him taking things too far and there really was no hope for him after that. In a separate timeline where he lost his powers prior to that as seen in TUE, sure. But not after the cloning. As we really saw him lose it further and further as he lost time and again against Danny to the point where Vlad really had gone nuts, as seen in Infinite Realms.) The season showed their rivalry come to a head with Vlad intent on ruining Danny for good, whatever it takes. Phantom Planet gets a lot of unnecessary hate. While I agree that the first half was a bit weak, the latter half really picked things up. We can't deny that the entire sequence wasn't great, of Danny coming back and taking on the full responsibility of the world, then revealing his identity, getting together with the girl he's crazy about, all of that. And while Danny's decision to reveal his identity to the world wasn't in accordance with what we'd been led to believe. Your take on Forever Phantom is something I've been saying for years now! That convo with Amorpho where Danny says how fame isn't all it's cracked up to be and that he's happy to blend in, was so good. Ending with that scene where he looks at the gigantic poster of his image as Amity Park's mascot or something, and him saying how he wants to be left alone, like speak of exemplary visual aid, amiright? So why would he want to be famous in the end? It would be an absolute nightmare for him, as seen in Reality Trip. It would've been interesting to see the negative repercussions of that. For all the flak Butch gets, deservedly so, he did have one good idea for future episodes. Where Danny, tired of the fame, decides to reside more often in the Ghost Zone, essentially hiding behind his ghostly persona the way he'd hid behind his human self for years before. It would've made for more conflict and I would've liked to see that. As for Danny and Sam, I truly believe that because of the events from Double Cross My Heart, when Danny was forced to admit his feelings for Sam to himself, he became more openly affectionate towards her afterwards. It almost seemed like he didn't even care that he was giving her preferential treatment or looking at her too often after Gregor-gate. We'd have scenes of him being too flirty with her even in episodes not centered around them. He's always been open about his crushes, Paulina and Valerie. So once he figures out his feelings for Sam, of course he'd be full hands on deck. All in all, so many more takes but this message is too long already. I love your videos and I can't wait for your new video essays. You are seriously so so awesome.

I am so delighted to read this and to be a source of joy about this show for you. I totally agree about the cloning taking things too far. It's truly a horrifying plot point and makes me want to make a whole video on Vlad as a character. I really think Reality Trip could have informed some amazing storytelling for the rest of the show had this series been serialized! It's my favorite special / double length episode. I think you're right about Double Cross My Heart. This show preferred to show rather than tell a lot of the time for the connection between Danny and Sam, and they did show how he felt in these little looks and moments throughout the season. They were more deeply connected than most people acknowledge before Phantom Planet, I always think of the way they look at each other in Frightmare before they go into Nocturne's dream. I had a soft spot for the Ice powers he got. I always took as a play on the “chills” one would get in the presence of a ghost, or even the cold breathe he’d get when there is a ghost near by

I always thought it was cause of his ice core. Since ghosts are generally said to be cold, it must be because of their cores. Or maybe this is just fanfic speak. But it was a great addition to his powers. It made sense that in the years he'd been a ghost, his core got stronger and stronger and the coldness built up inside him, which sensed other other entities with similar cold cores. The Ghost Sense. It kinda works canonically, although those powers did make Danny too much of a deux ex machina. Rendering his normal ectoplasm kinda inert.

In season 3, I've never had an issue with Danny using ice powers. It's definitely mythical as Butch wanted it to be, but it at least doesn't come off as lazy. And I always thought it made sense for Danny to have ice manipulation since he is a ghost. And ghosts/spirits are known by their presence to be cold and usually dropping the temperature down a lot making one see their own breath because of it. So, personally, Danny getting ice powers was never an issue for me to begin with. We also get to see how creative and visually stunning attacks Danny uses with these ice powers even combining them with his ectoplasm manipulation. Making Danny a very creatively powerful superhero in the Nicktoons roster.

Looking at it from that angle I actually like it more. I play a lot of the game Phasmophobia which has like 30 types of ghosts in it and a significant chunk of them command cold or are more powerful in cold environments.

Yeah if you'll notice, his evil future self has a ghost sense that comes upward and out of his nose, because heat rises and cold falls. But I'd have to agree that the elemental powers thing could have benefited from being fleshed out more as a concept if they had the time.

The complete series was one of my last DVD purchases. I think I’ve only had 3 or 4 since. No my issue with season 3 most of all isn’t what you said, it’s the full-on employ of Butch Hartman’s philosophy of what the ghosts were: Monsters from another dimension, despite Youngblood, Poindexter, Ember, Kitty, Desiree and Johnny being explicitly dead humans. Without Marmel he was completely unimpeded. That’s how we got that weather ghost, or those frost creatures that helped turn Danny’s ghost sense into ice powers. They’re good allies but they’d be better as straight up aliens than accessible through a GHOST world.

Season 1 is very bendy and the characters are very thin, scrawny and differently proportioned. They're quite rigid and geometric in season 3. I believe there was a shift in animation tools being used somewhere in there as well as budget cuts affecting things.

Girls night out should have been 'Kitty, Ember, and Dora' vs 'Jazz, Sam and Valerie'. For the heroes I think it would have been much more interesting to see those three have a reluctant team up to save the day with maybe Val and Sam becoming friends at the end, putting their rivalry to bed. For the villains it makes no sense why Ember, a ghost who hates adults and gains power from making people enthusiastically obsessed with her, wouldn't absolutely despise Spectra, an Adult who gains power by making people lethargically depressed.

I'm a bit older but I loooved Danny Phantom at the time and I would watch seasons 1 and 2 endlessly whenever episodes came on TV. I actually don't have nearly as many memories about season 3 because...Nickelodeon buried it after it was cancelled, and I didn't see a lot of those season 3 episodes nearly as many times. And it's not something like Invader ZIM where it later became a cult classic justifying reairings. Danny Phantom came and went and because I was NOT there at the dawn of virtual media thanks to having slow internet and no portable video devices, I really didn't get a chance to see most of season 3's episodes more than once or maybe twice. Even Phantom Planet, I only saw once!! It's also worth noting that the episodes were originally aired OUT OF ORDER. The "first" episode of season 3 for live TV audiences wasn't the one where Vlad runs for mayor...it was the one where Danny gets his ice powers. For a season that you note is more focused on continuity, this decision by Nickelodeon made the season difficult to watch as new episodes were airing as well. Just like with Invader ZIM, they didn't respect their audience.

Something I adore about DP is that it's about a kid who was handed a lot in life that can occasionally be amazing but most of the time is dangerous and stressful. (A bit like Percy Jackson) Danny is always just "Getting through", like the universe is conspiring to drop as much shit on him as it can to see how far he can bend. No wonder Danny jumps at any chance to make his life a little better/easier. Even when everyone knows it's a bad idea, you still completely understand why he's doing it. Ignoring his problems won't make them go away, he just has to get through and cope with the stress. It's not fair for him especially as a kid but that's what makes you want to root for him to land on his feet.

There actually is a ghost power Danny has that existed before the Ice powers and was connected to it... his Ghost sense (which ironically didn't appear in that episode). As the "cold breath" visual of it was caused by his body releasing a bit of his "cold energy.... thingy" when he senses a Ghost nearby. So it wasn't completely out of nowhere.

Forever Phantom was one of my favorite episodes growing up, especially because of that scene when Amorpho transformed into Danny’s ghost form out of jealousy for all the attention Danny was getting. It went unnecessarily hard. Glad it’s being highlighted in this video!

I remember the frist time i watched this show. I'm from the UK so when my dad my sister and i visited America florida for the summer holidays, was maybe around 16/17 at the time. We stayed at a resort and yes American shows air in the UK and still do but normally at least a year gap, anyway i was wating tv then this show popped up on nickelodeon i loved it but sadly i couldn't continue watching for about a year also not many people had kable at the time only BBC and ITV channels at the time unless you have SKY you could watch nickelodeon/cartoon network and other channels such as the POP channels or NTL at the time but shut down

The thing about Phantom Planet to me, I didn't know that it was the end of the show and was just like, "Alright, that was a cool special, not sure where it fits, but i wont worry about it too much. In my personal opinion I think that Danny double timing it to prove to the town that Danny Phantom is needed wasn’t the best choice. I could say that Danny could have lived a normal life while the masters blasters do his job until there was a ghost they couldn’t handle. Danny Phantom ran from 2004 to 2007; at the time it had its finale I was still in the middle-school or early high-school where I was being relentlessly bullied by my classmates for being top-of-the-class and pressured by my parents to be even smarter even as I came home with a GPA that exceeded the possibility of existence. The school uses a 5.0 max for its GPA scale? I'm sorry that a 6.52 GPA across every class, 1000+ hours a year volunteering, 200+ hours of work-study, and taking care of all the pets and most of the chores isn't enough to let me get away with officially staying up until midnight on the weekend. I empathized with every time that Danny gave up his powers, the responsibility thrust upon him by everyone else... because I would have done so if it meant I could just have a week of normalcy and complacency.

@@offbeatkiki Yes, I was thinking it had to be KZbin itself. It didn't happen here, but it's happened so many other times that l quickly realised that no KZbin creator would place them like that. Videos that never had midrolls before now have them, and channel which say they are ad-free have ads pushed on them by KZbin. It destroys suspense and disrupts learning.

I spent the entirety of August watching this show and I had an absolute blast. Danny Phantom is fantastic and I’d say it’s definitely in my Top 5 Nickelodeon shows list lol. Also, while watching the show on Paramount +, I realized that ‘The Ultimate Enemy’ came out the same day I was born, which is honestly really surprising. That episode gets some bonus points from me just for coming out the same day I came into this world lol

As someone who just finished rewatching the whole series not too long ago and read the graphic novel, it made me remember how much I loved the series as a kid. Now as an adult I appreciate so much more than I did back then. Also, I gotta say, season three was a fun deviation and I enjoyed it for what it was. I honestly didn’t notice the forced ship as a kid but looking back Valerie should have ended with Danny instead of Sam. Valerie liked Danny for Danny, Sam only liked him for his ghost half because the moment he wanted a normal life she wanted nothing to do with him anymore.

I had no idea fans were commonly vocal about what season was the best. Maybe there were episodes I liked less, but never did I seen an episode I thought sucked. Huge fan of your Danny Phantom analysis videos. Like you I really enjoyed the show's worldbuilding (worldbuilding in general is something I enjoy with anything). This video was a great watch especially that you got Kuro the artist on! His Ben 10 Danny Phantom crossover is an inspiration for my own fanfiction writing 😁 Anyway consider me subscribed 😄

I fully agree with everything said here, except for the assumption that Danny’s ice powers had no connection to his previous power set. If I remember right, Frostbite explained that all along, Danny’s ghost sense was his ice powers coming out in small amounts. It’s not a great explanation by any means, but they did at least throw it in there. And idk. I’ve honestly seen worse reasons for random plot points cobbled up in Spider-Man and Invincible. I can let this one slide.

Here are my good thing of season 3 1. Danny gets new ghost powers like ice powers, power absorption, 2. New ghost Characters like Frostbite and Amorpho are introduce 3. Characters from season 1-2 like Dani, Wulf, Walker, Kitty, Ember and Specter come back for at least one episode 4. A few new villains like Nocturn, Vortex and Undergrowth despite going against original material

It really made me angry some of the ghosts didn't completely turn good and allies for Danny. I could see Pointdexter, Ember, Desiree, Kitty and Johnny 13 as his allies, I even shipped Ember with Chip Skylark from Fairly Oddparents

Makes sense. Plus, those are some of the more neutral ghosts in the roster (Ember’s plots were surprisingly non-lethal, if dangerous (apart from the obvious non-consent) at all, and I can buy Desiree’s spite and occasionally passive-aggressive wish interpretations (was that used in the right context?) being fueled by her own unpleasant life. And Poindexter, Kitty, and Johnny were only enemies by circumstance.

In my opinion season 3 was the best, since we got to see the Danny's development of and his evolution as a character. In season 1, Danny was an immature boy who only cared about his status and popularity. In season 2, Danny had changed a bit but he still has a bit of that, finally in season 3 we see Danny as a more complete character.

Okay I’ll say as a long time Danny Phantom fan your video essays on the show are so good. Even I always felt season 3 was overhated. Yea it’s not the absolute best but honestly for me Danny and Sam’s relationship that was building and of course the best episode of season 3 urban jungle being released made it highly memorable for me. But, I always saw Danny Phantom as that show that might have its flaws but the episodes that are really good really stand out. It left a strong impact on me. Which I read a glitch in time and loved it. Though I’ll have to admit I have a weird history with season 3. Nickelodeon did not treat Danny Phantom very highly especially after Avatar the last air bender was released and SpongeBob was the big show that nick cared more about than anything else. Nickelodeon didn’t show this season in order when it was released on the channel. That certainly didn’t help. I actually managed to somehow find the episodes online on Vimeo before the season was shown on Nickelodeon. From what I was told, Nickelodeon in other countries had more diverse programming so they released season 3 first and it got leaked online. 😂. So I’ll confess I saw phantom planet months before it was released in the US 😂 I still watched it on the main channel but it is a pretty funny memory. Plus watching the big Danny Phantom week they did for season 3 was pretty cool.

I enjoyed the while series, I even enjoyed the comic that came out of decade later, a glitch in time. Season 1 & 2 were peak Season 3 definitely was underwhelming, but I still enjoyed it It's unfortunate we never able to get a season 4, I know they would've cooked, Season 3 would have been better too if nickelodeon wasn't constantly fumbling all the time back then

I've still never heard anything bad about season 3 to be honest, well, besides it just kind of, ending (though I still just see one long season because I'm simplistic like that). 'Reality Trip' was the bees knees when it came out, was so excited for it. Really looking forward to the new book once I'm not too broke to afford it. Still unfortunately remember "performing" the theme song in....5th grade? Stood up on the lunch table and busted out the whole intro after like, only two epsiodes had aired, lol, please let me die to everyone who was there for that @.@ . Also, there was an art change? I probably heard about this before, but im still going to say this is news to me. Also, the Frightmare episode is probably one of my favourites.
