Hey Robert and Other Robert...Great to see you, sir. My husband had a cousin who died earlier this month and was buried in our family section in the Cemetery that was on what was his 4th grandfather's plantation. His 4th grandfather died in 1824 and was the 1st buried there. The Cemetery was put into a trust that still exists and is still in perpetual care. Descendents of the 10 men who were given land grants for Revolutionary war service are still being buried here, even if they died elsewhere. What you are doing in saving the names of the lost souls you finds a true blessing and God bless you for doing this important work.

My grandma was born in 1888. I used to love to hear her talk of her childhood. One story stands out... her school teacher would let all the children gather to look out the window when a vehicle would come down the road. Cars were not common, only the very wealthy had them. They thought that it was really something special to see.

It's SO awesome to see ya'll together again!! We miss all that fun you two have together!! That cemetery reminds me of how it was in Augusta at Ft Gordon, now Ft Eisenhower, at signal school in the summer of '77. We had to build a communication line and it involved digging the telephone pole holes, installing the poles, and climbing them to install the hardware and wiring. I was from the Ozark hills of northwest Arkansas where everything is rocks and even digging a single fence post hole can be a daunting challenge. The telephone poles needed to be in the ground about 5 feet and I was so dreading that!! We started digging with shovels, and I was amazed! It was all sand and so very easy to hand dig a 5 foot pole hole! Seeing all that sand in the cemetery brought back lots of good old memories.😊

About David Leroy Helms - He and his wife, Rebecca "Rebecker" Ann (Sanders) moved to Alabama before 1860 and are shown in the Pike Co. census. He was conscripted into the Confederate army March 23, 1862 from Leon, AL and served with Co. C, 37th AL Infantry. The 37th AL regiment fought at the battle of Iuka, MS on September 18-19, 1862 and the battle of Corinth on October 3-4,1862 and the battle of Hatchie (Davis) bridge on October 5, 1862. The 37th AL also fought at Chickasaw Bayou (Dec. 26-29, 1862), the battle of Port Gibson (May 1, 1863), and the battle of Champion Hill (May 16, 1863). David Leroy was hospitalized at the General Hospital in Lauderdale Springs, MS on April 8, 1863 and Loring's Division Hospital, Lauderdale, MS on August 9, 1863 before returning to Marion Co. on Oct. 2, 1863. David Leroy does not appear on the rolls from the Vicksburg siege (which began May, 1863). He died of measles followed by chronic diarrhea on Nov. 2, 1863. Rebecker Ann married Robert B. Goodroe on April 29, 1897 and is buried next to him in Marion Co., (Providence Cemetery). He died in 1907. The 1870 Marion Co. census shows Rebecker Ann living with her daughter Sophronia, age 9 and her son Lee A. David Leroy's original gravestone was inscribed "A friend to his country and a believer in Christ". The headstone was found broken in half and was replaced with a ground-level stone in 2005 by great-great-grandnephew, David John Helms.
