This video shows how to diagnose why the wall control for your garage door opener isn’t working and what to do about it. Here’s an overview of the flow of the troubleshooting. If you find the problem at any of these steps, you can skip the rest.
1. Check for power.
2. Check the wiring between the wall control and the garage door opener motor.
3. Check the wiring in the wall. How you check it depends on the kind of wall control your garage door opener has.
Visit us at:
www.searspartsdirect.com/diy/...
Check for power
1. Check the LED light or electronic display on the wall control. If the wall control LED light is lit or the electronic display works, the wall control and garage door opener motor unit have power. Skip to the next section, “Check the wiring between the wall control and motor.”
2. If the light or display is off, check the garage door opener’s motor unit for power by pressing the Learn button on the motor unit.
If the light on the motor unit comes on, the unit has power. Skip to the next section, “Check the wiring between the wall control and motor.”
If the light on the motor unit doesn’t come, reset the house circuit breaker for the garage door opener electrical outlet.
3. If resetting the circuit breaker doesn’t solve the problem, test the outlet by plugging in a lamp or small appliance.
If the electrical outlet works, replace the garage door opener logic board. We have a video that shows how.
If the outlet doesn’t work, have an electrician repair it.
Check the wiring between the wall control and motor
If the wall control has power or pressing the Learn button in the previous section showed that the motor unit has power, the next step is to check the wiring between the wall control and the motor unit:
• Make sure the wall control wires securely connect to the motor unit. The all-white wire connects to the white terminal and the white wire with the red stripe connects to the red terminal.
• Check the wires connected to the wall control. Reconnect any loose wires.
• If you can see the path of wires between the motor unit and wall control, look for any visible damage and repair any damage you find.
Check the wiring in the wall
If the connections are secure, and the visible wiring is intact, the next step is to test the wiring you can’t see. How you test it depends on whether your wall control has an LED light or a digital display.
Test the wiring of an LED wall control
This test is for wall control with a single LED light. If your garage door opener has another type of wall control, skip to the next section.
To test this wall control, remove it from the wall and disconnect the wires on the back. Touch the bare ends of the wall control wire together to see if the garage door moves.
If the door moves, the wiring is okay, because the motor unit sensed the wiring connection. In that case, replace the wall control. We have a video that shows how.
• Replacing the Wall Con...
If the door didn't move when you touched the bare ends of the wall control wires, it’s likely there’s a wiring problem. Follow these steps to check the wiring:
1. Disconnect the wires from the motor unit.
2. Cut a 3-inch strand of insulated wire to use as a jumper wire and strip 1/2-inches of insulation off each end.
3. Insert the jumper wire into the wall control terminals on the motor unit to see if the garage door moves.
If the garage door works with the jumper wire, there’s a break somewhere in the wall control wiring. Replace the wires.
If the jumper wire didn’t work, you’ve ruled out everything but the logic board. Watch our video that shows how to replace the logic board.
• Replacing the Logic Bo...
Test other types of wall controls
This test is for wall controls with a digital display.
1. Pull the wall control off the wall and disconnect the wires from the back.
2. Disconnect the wall control wires from the motor unit.
3. Cut a section of insulated 2-strand wire about a foot long and then strip about 1/2-inch of insulation from each end.
4. Use the 2-strand wire to connect the red and white terminals on the wall control to the corresponding terminals on the motor unit, connecting the all-white wire to the white terminal and the white wire with the red stripe to the red terminal.
If the wall control lights up and works, the wall control is okay and the problem is the wiring. Replace the wiring between the motor unit and the wall control.
If the wall control doesn't light up and work properly, either the wall control or the logic board in the garage door opener is defective. Diagnosing this type of wall control is more complicated than the single LED type. To know for sure what the problem is, you may want to have a service technician check the garage door opener.

I tested my wall control using short wires going directly to the opener. That worked. When I put it back on the wall I noticed that I had not made a good connection previously. I had not fully stripped the insulation off of one of the wires. Thanks, your troubleshooting video was great.

I have a wall control, the fancy LCD display, that will stop responding about one out of three or four times I walk into the garage and want to open the door. I know it has power, but fails to sense motion, or respond to the switch at the top to actuate the door. I've sometimes taken the cover off and touched the switches with both hands and it sometimes will wake up. Once I use a remote to move the door, the wall switch 'wakes' up and will respond normally. So it is very intermittent. I now have removed it from the wall and have tightened the wires at the terminals. The wires appear fine, they were the existing wires for the previous system, and that system never failed to actuate. I loved the video, it really has been a help. Crossing my fingers that the tightened connection works well.

Great tutorial. The jumper option i believe doesn’t work due to that the LiftMaster Model 882LM Multi-Function Control Panel is Security+2.0. There’s a paragraph about it in the installation instructions under “Wiring Research”. Connecting directly to the opener doesn’t work because the the openers enabled with Security+ 2.0 (MyQ and AssureLink models from LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Sears) can’t be triggered with a toggle. They must use the encrypted serial protocol supported by remotes like the 882LM.

Ive been looking for a wire diagram or trouble shooting FLOW CHART for a couple of days, pissed off beyond all measures because GOOGLE cant locate one, like either the industry is full of "specialists" that throws parts at problems to eliminate them one by one or the industry is afraid people will fix things on their own when given the correct information. Well, I tend to think there is equal measure of both. I have used this guys diagnostics in the past fix two different washing machines, you are a great trouble shooter and worth your wages all day long. My problem was after replacing a tension springs and the limiter switch the "WALL MOUNT" (really, wall mount? Isnt it a "Touch Pad") was flashing non stop rapidly. I had added a LED light to the flood light circuit and wasnt sure if I had damaged the Circuit Board but couldnt verify. The hand held remotes all worked, but the WALL MOUNT didnt move the garage door up or down. Taking the wall mount down and looking at crossing the wires together made the door open and close. Good so far, but while moving the mount in my hand the door would all of a sudden start to operate, WTF? SO, I banged on the back of of the WALL MOUNT and it would start to function again. I took the backing plate off of the WALL MOUNT and looked at the circuit board and sure enough there was a burned contact on the WHITE wire. I disconnected power, and then I was able to drop a small amount of solder on the contact and firmed it up and reconnected the mount to the wall and plugged in the Garage Opener. and all is well 30 minutes later. I am going to post this video to my FB as the BEST GARAGE DOOR OPENER DIAGNOSTIC VIDEO EVER!

Question, I have a Sears craftsman 3/4 hp motor that came with a smart wall button which has an LCD screen along with a motion detector among other things and it sends all the commands using an 18/2 conductor. The lLCD wall box got damaged so I wanted to use a basic doorbell button ( off course without the light). Would it work for basic open/ close operation or does it have to be the same type? I don’t want to replace wall box as I will be buying new unit latter on. Thank you.

Would connecting the wires cause the motor to work in reverse. Closing instead of opening. The reason I ask it’s because the sensors should stop the door from closing and opening up again when it senses an obstruction. In my case it does the opposite, the sensor stops the door from opening and closes when it detects and obstruction.

Let us know the model number of your garage door opener so we can see the type of control it has. Also, give us more details about how the problem started. A miss-wired wall control won't cause the garage door opener to run in the opposite direction as intended in many garage door opener models. Connecting wires to the logic board or motor incorrectly could cause the motor to run in the reverse direction in some models.

A wiring failure between the garage door opener motor unit and the wall control could prevent the wall control from working. Check the wiring as described at 1:04 in the video. Both sensors green and yellow are lit up near the floor solid. A technician came out and wanted to charge me $195 to adjust and replace the sensors. Said the sensors cost $150. That's not what my research shows they cost. I declined. Is this standard sensor replacement?
@searspartsdirect
@searspartsdirect 5 жыл бұрын
The sensors may be defective but that code could also be caused by sensor wiring problems. We recommend that you follow the troubleshooting steps shown in this video/article to check sensor wiring: www.searspartsdirect.com/diy/article/garage-door-wont-close-safety-sensor-troubleshooting-video-lights-blink-10-times If the wiring is okay and the sensors don't work when connected with short wire directly at the motor unit as shown in that video, then you'll likely need to replace the sensors. If you replace the sensors and the garage door opener behaves the same, then you'll likely need to replace the logic board in the motor unit. We hope this information helps. If you need more assistance, let us know.

If your garage door opener had a backup battery, the motor won’t run with a drained battery and lack of power from the electrical outlet. Check the electrical outlet for the garage door opener to make sure it’s working. If your garage door opener doesn’t have a backup battery, then a failed logic board may be causing the problem.

To troubleshoot the doorbell switch, check the wiring as shown at :58 in the video. If the wiring is okay, disconnect the wires from the doorbell switch and briefly touch the bare ends of the wires together to simulate the doorbell button being pressed. If the garage door opener works when you briefly press the bare ends of the doorbell switch wires together, then the doorbell switch is broken. Replace the doorbell switch. Here’s a link for the replacement doorbell switch: www.searspartsdirect.com/part-number/41A4166/0009/139.html If the garage door opener doesn’t start when you briefly touch the doorbell switch wire ends together, connect short strands of wire to the motor unit wall control connections and touch the bare ends of the short wire strands together. If the garage door opener doesn’t work then you’ll likely need to replace the logic board because the logic board isn’t detecting the wall control signal. If the garage door opener works when touching the short wire strand ends together, replace the wiring between the garage door opener and the wall control because a break in the wall control wiring is preventing the wall control from working. If you fix the wall control and can’t program remote, follow the steps in this video to troubleshoot the remote: www.searspartsdirect.com/article/garage-door-opener-remotes-wont-work-video.html We hope these troubleshooting tips help. If you need more assistance, post additional details and let us know the model number of your garage door opener.

Check the wall unit for loose wiring. Use the instructions in your owner’s manual as a guide for checking the wiring. If you don’t have the manual, you can likely find an online copy of the manual here: www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/user-manuals. Reconnect any loose wires between the wall control and the motor unit. If the wall control wiring is okay, press the wall control activation bar to synchronize the wall control with the logic board. You may have to press the bar up to 3 times to synchronize the wall control with the logic board. When you try to close the door with the WiFi app and the lights flash on the motor unit, check the number of flashes and refer to your owner’s manual for troubleshooting tips. The logic board may detect a problem and may be signaling an error code by flashing the motor unit lights in a pattern. If these general tips don’t help, let us know the model number of your garage door opener and we’ll try to provide some additional troubleshooting tips to resolve your wall control problem.

Unplug the garage door opener motor unit from its electrical outlet for 1 minute to reset the logic board and then plug the power cord back in. The doorbell light may stop blinking and the garage door opener may work normally. Thank you so much for this awesome video. I have a question, is it safe to short the wires as indicated in the video for all similar units? We have carftsman 1/2HP and it looks similar to that one show in the video. I want to test the unit to open/close the unit by shorting the connectors using a wire as explained. Is this always safe to do? Because we have Digital Ants Bluetooth device that needs to be connected to the wire inserts of the motor unit shown in the video. Is this compatible with the unit?
@searspartsdirect
@searspartsdirect 5 жыл бұрын
No. That troubleshooting tip doesn’t work for all wall control devices. Shorting the wall control wires together only works for checking wiring on garage door openers that use basic wall controls like the ones shown 2:06 in the video. If your garage door opener uses a digital wall control or a wall control that’s different than the one shown at 2:06 in the video, follow the steps shown at 3:41 in the video to check the wall control wiring. If the wall control doesn’t work when connected to the motor unit with short wires as shown in that troubleshooting, then you’ll likely need to replace wall control. If you replace the wall control and it still doesn’t work, then you may need to replace the logic board in the garage door opener’s motor unit.

@@searspartsdirect is it always ok to short the connectors at the back of the motor unit as described in the video? There are some third party add-ons devices that require to be connected directly to such connectors which will simulate the push of the button of the wall control unit.

I have to press the wall button over and over again and eventually the door will open. I put new batteries in my remote openers and they will still don't work. I was told that the sensor inside the garage door opener could possibly be burnt out. Does that sound right?

The sensor on the logic board inside the garage door opener motor unit could be causing the problems that you’re describing, but other issues could also cause the same problems. We recommend that you check the wiring between the wall control and the motor unit as shown beginning at :58 in the above video. Bad wires could be preventing the wall control from working properly. Also, to find out what’s wrong with the remotes, we recommend that you follow the tips in our remote troubleshooting at www.searspartsdirect.com/article/garage-door-opener-remotes-wont-work-video.html.

When I use the wall control my light blinks three times, then my car receivers quit working. Re-program car receivers. They will work as long as I don’t use the wall transmitter.

The 3 blinks when you try to use the wall control indicates that the logic board detects that the wall control is bad or the wall control wires are shorted. Follow the troubleshooting steps in your owner’s manual to determine whether the wall control is bad or the wall control wires are shorted. If you can’t find your manual, you can use the manual on this webpage: www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/user-manuals/13953925ds-craftsman-parts-manual. The troubleshooting for the 3-blink code is on page 34 of the online manual.

My garage door opens if I push the button on the motor. It opens when I push the wireless remote that I carry in my pocket. The wall mount doesn't work. I disconnected the wall mount and shorted the wires: nothing happens. I climbed up to the motor and removed the left-most red and white wires, then inserted some new Cat-5e (telephone/data wire) into the red/white, then shorted them out on the other end, twisting the bare wire together: The up arrow flashes once, then the down arrow flashes three times. The video says at 1:40 that it's a wall control wire failure or a defective wall control. How can it be a defective wall control or defective wiring when I'm using a 2-inch piece of wire at the motor?
@searspartsdirect
@searspartsdirect 5 жыл бұрын
Shorting the wall control wires together using short pieces of wire connected to the motor unit works for testing some types of simple wall controls that have a single LED light. That test won’t work for all wall controls. Try connecting the wall control to the motor unit using short strands of wire. If the wall control works properly when connected to the motor unit using short wire strands then you'll need to repair or replace the existing wall control wiring. If the wall control doesn't work when connected to the motor unit using the short wire strands then you’ll likely need to replace the wall control because it isn’t sending accurate signals to the motor unit. If you replace the wall control and the problem continues, you’ll likely need to replace the logic board in the garage door opener motor unit. We hope these troubleshooting tips help. If you need more assistance, give us an update of symptoms based on the above advice and let us know the model number of your garage door opener and the type of wall control that it uses.

Sears PartsDirect thanks for the quick response. I’ll try disconnecting the wall mount from the wall and using shorter wires to connect to the motor.

No luck. Connecting the wall mount directly to the motor (with 6 inches of wire) make the wall mount display light up, but it won't open the door. Pressing the button on the motor makes the door open. Pressing the wireless remote makes the door open. Shorting the wires by hand at the motor doesn't make the door open.

Because the wall mount display lights up when you connect it to the motor unit using the 6-inch wires, you’ve eliminated the wiring between the wall mount display and the motor unit as a potential failure. If your wall control has a control lock feature that prevents the wall control from opening/closing the door, make sure that the control lock feature is disabled. If the wall control doesn’t have a control lock feature, then the wall control or the logic board has likely failed. If the wall mount has more than one button, then you’ll likely need to replace the wall control. We don’t have technical information to help you test signals from a wall control with more than 1 button. If you replace the wall control and the problem continues, then you’ll likely need to replace the logic board inside the motor unit. We hope this additional information helps. If you need more assistance, send us more details and the model number of your garage door opener (along with the type of wall control it uses).

Just curious to know - what would happen if I put the wires in reverse into the motor? So red in white and white in red? Only reason I ask is my new motor doesn't have the colour codes so not 100% sure which wire to put in which port. It's an illuminated switch and have 4 ports to put in PB, GND, PE, and 24/36+. Thanks in advance!

That code typically indicates that the logic board failed. You'll likely need to replace the logic board to fix that failure. Before replacing the logic board, you can try resetting the board by unplugging the power cord for 2 minutes then plugging the garage door opener back in. Although that tactic only works about 10% of the time to fix this problem, it's worth a shot.
