As a Autolocksmith I as others can read the pin code from the EPROM chip on the PCB. Used to many of these years ago.

I was laughing in happiness so much when you got the correct numbers, that my cat woke up and gave me a look as if to say "What's wrong NOW, you crazy human?" 😂😂 Twenty years ago I had a 1996 Peugeot 306 SLDT, and it's keypad was the same. I bought it cheap because the owner had forgotten the keycode, and also he thought the turbo had gone. I used the same trick as you to get the code (7648) and it turned out that the thick rubber driver's mat was wedged behind the accelerator. Turbo was fine. That was one heck of a cheap and lucky car. 😅

On my Xantia the code was so worn into the keypad that it was obvious to even a small child what the code was. I took it out while the engine was running and fitted a tray for stuff instead.

Looking at the wear to the carbon contacts on the keypad, that's actually a very clever way of hacking the code, obviously not something a car thief would do in-situ, but for someone restoring a car with such a system as you are doing, that's a cool way to deal with it... :D Only trouble now is, we all know the code, so, I hope there's a way to change it... :S

@@SeasideGarage Not sure a car thief would be bothered by keys, as my BX that I briefly owned had found out, given not long before I was given it, someone hammered out the iginition lock to steal it, only to find that it was free of battery power and of course the timing belt had snapped anyway, so, no pinching, just made a mess of it... :S

@@SeasideGarage Yeah, this was 20 years ago now, and the car was in better condition at the time than your 4x4 (apart from the broken tailgate lock & window, the ruined ignition lock, the timing belt (1.9L XUD, so, non-interference engine, probably could have revived it), and the front doors hanging on by a rusty thread), but given they couldn't even sell it for £50 back then, it wasn't worth fixing up, I just took it cos I felt sorry for it... :(

Once you get the right pin in and the engine running. Disconnect the plug on the keypad while the engine is running. Then leave it disconnected. And you will no longer have to enter the pin to make the engine start. Unless you connect the pin pad back to the car. Then the process will start again.

The code is stored in the ECU not the keypad. So it is easy to shift keypads between cars when they are worn (as I have done) but the code will be the same. I am not sure the keypad had been changed in this car. Maybe just the plastic clip thing? The keypad looks like an early model. I have an 98 XM Tct and the buttons are different on the keypad. More rounded there ones are ”square”.

It's stored in both the ECU and the keypad, but the keypad will take the code from the ECU when you put another ECU in the car. Apparently it's possible to read the code from the keypad that way

If i install another ecu without any idea what the code is, can i insert the code from the original ecu and it will start? Or overwrite the code?

@@ashleydewitt7086 It won't. You'd need to read one of the ROM chips in the ecu to get the code. Or hope that someone wrote the code onto the ecu with a sharpie, which is what I tend to do

IIRC the earlier PSA keypad system had a D/N button & the later one a S button. The S button version is insurance approved to Thatcham Category 2 here in the UK. The S button version is harder to beat as you only get 3 attempts at the code before a 30 minute lock out period which blocks further code entry attempts. There is a way but it's not a viable theft method.
