Honda make some great engines. Not just cars but bikes, lawnmowers, whatever. All good.

My second reliable car was a Honda Concerto, their version of the Rover 200. It was such a nice car to drive, very comfortable & very high spec compared to the Micra K10 Collette that came before it. It was a great wee car too though. It followed a Peugeot 104 & a Vauxhall Cavalier 1.6 diesel (naturally aspirated & possibly the worst diesel engine on the market!). The Concerto remains one of my favourites & Id love to have it now.

When I was a kid I had Honda mopeds, they were clearly so much better quality than other brands.

I would always swap the pump, because it may have a plastic impeller that can come loose or break into pieces.

How much does it cost you to have your garage blocked with a car you can't really move for 2 weeks then? :)

What a cool, hot engine! 😃

Irony is, although it's a Honda D-series engine, the temperature senser will likely be a K-type thermocouple (a standard component used in pretty much everything that measures temperatures directly), just adds to the amusement of there also being "K-Seal" stop-leak gasket-sealing stuff, given K-Series engines being known to overheat and blow gaskets it all adds up... :P

The manual typically publishes the resistance to temperature graph for the ECT. Might be interesting to remove it, put in in a warming pot and plot it out to compare. Maybe not 🤣🍻

I wouldn't worry to much about the water pump, either it's been replaced or it's the Honda original - either way it should be ok for quite some time still. Should you decide to replace it though, consider adjusting the valve clearance at the same time (or do it anyways). Sounds like there's a lot of ticking going on.

15:10 I did that with my Mazda, just did the belt. The waterpump looked fine.

Interesting, my sister’s 95 Civic is doing the same thing temperature wise. The car isn’t overheating but the gauge is pegged. She drives around all year with the heating on full blast. She had the rad flushed and stat changed and it’s still showing 🥵

They say is better to disconnect ground from battery that way you eliminate the whole chassis as conductor.

Does it need a new pressure cap maybe?

The temperature gauge on these cars should point in the middle all the time the engine is at operating temperature. It will be either the gauge or the sensor. I have the car for 5 years now and never seen anything except middle, within 2-3km.

And a hot engine? Are you suggesting that a Rover would ever overheat? :)

It's the honda engine !

Basically it's a rebadged Integra. I used to work for a Honda dealership where these Rovers turned up for service regularly.
