There are so many people who complain about stuff they have no clue about that it's hard to believe, when I did something similar to Hoover for 40+ years, I had to develop a thick skin, and now that I'm "retired" and doing what Chris does, it's the same thing. A friend of mine said it best "never cuss a farmer while you're sitting at the dinner table." I'm more direct, "if you let the knuckle britches with the complaints get their way, I would hope they're the first ones going hungry."

Hi Chris and Mike, thank you for putting this together so some of non-farm people can really get why you did the tile work. Most of us understand the basics but when Chris attached real numbers to it, it hit home. I have to hand it to you Chris, you are a natural born speaker. Good like when you go to Washington D. C. in February, I don't really know what you're speaking on exactly, but I think it may be farming. Let's hope you audience there is as interested in what you're saying as this audience is.

Nice to know what's happened to the fields that have been drained through the use of the tile plough, farming equipment needs room, if your forever struggling with a wet patch, there's a good chance you may damage the equipment as well.

Unfortunately that’s one of the main problems we face today in America. People that have no clue what they’re talking about make a statement, others see it and run with it as facts. If it’s on Google or FB, twitter etc then it’s true. People look for reasons to get mad. We also have too many professional victims.

Chris’s idea of laying the riser flat and putting gravel over it works well. We laid a piece of fabric over the riser, then cover it with oversize. I know a farmer that did that with all his dry dams so he doesn’t have to go around the pipes. Here in central Illinois.

I have layed miles and miles of edge drain and underdrain on highway work and the benefits on it is amazing. Most of the rough places in a roadway is from water under the road and u have to get it out or road will always be bad. So I understand the situation and reason y'all do what u do. Now the beavers I prefer the hats and gloves they make from the little buggers. As always an awesome podcast keep up the hard work,

That the thing field tile works 24-7 and it just helps get the extra surface water away faster. That is one of the biggest problems. The plants want moisture but they don't want to be swimming in water. That why is is best to have a 1 inch or .5 inch every few days then 6 inch's in a day. Also with the soil drier the roots will try to find moisture as well then go deep and when you have a dry year the plants still can do good if the roots went deeper.

Framer Chris that the thing I know you do everything with a hand shake an that good yeah you should do stuff to protect you but yes most framers will not step or try to get land away from other framers. I can tell the you take care of the land and the landlords you keep them happy and they stay with you. Also it is not always about the amount of rent they get. It is about the relationship and how you treat the land and what you do for the landlord. Our family have been with the same framer family since 1985. It was a old classmate of my dad in school. His son was just getting into the framing with his dad and our farm was his first on he rented. Then in 2016 his grandson need proven ground for insurance reason so his dad gave him our farm to rent so it was his first. Now that I own it I'm staying with the same one and we are actually hoping that someday the grandson kids want to farm and they can take over my farm. They have treated us right and they do thing others farmers don't do. They take care of all the field tile that go bad and they remove snow in the in winter also if we need stone for the drive we get better pricing and also they come spread them for us as well. So in the big picture the little things mean just as much as the money. Also when they come to pay there rent it is not just a here your money they sit and talk for a hour or 3 LOL.

Hi, this was really interesting regarding the extra yields on the fields you have drained. As the difference between UK and US farms is surprising regarding paying for drainage etc, many fields were clay piped in the 30s and 40s. I used to help do drainage on sports pitches, and the money sports clubs spend on drainage to agriculture is night and day. But guess in agriculture in the UK farmers have money tied up in machinery, buildings etc, especially as prices on crops and products aren't rising as quick as food in the supermarkets. Great video really enjoyed it.

Almost every spring is wet, and Almost every summer is dry. Roots will not put down in soild water. Tile takes the water down early, and Roots put down deep. When it turns dry in the summer you have a deep root system, and is picking up moisture deep. So you're crops don't burn up.

Hey Mike, we have what we call wet weather springs on our hills in the spring. We dig in our tile in those areas and put a layer of fill sand. In the vicinity of the spring we dig in cross trenches at the elevation of the tile and put sand in also. The trenches are as close as 10’ apart. We have put in thousands of feet on .1 grade controlled by a laser. I would guess that most of your land has more slope and doesn’t require as precise control. Tile works 24-7. It definitely pays. On rented property our landowners pay for material and we do the work.

You cannot catch a spring by plowing a tile thru it. what you can do is dig a hole in the spring, place a 100 ft tile roll still tied together in the hole and fill the hole with 3/4 washed rock and connect the bundle to the main tile. The rock enables the whole 100 feet of tile to collect the water and dump into the main. Problem solved

1) You realize and a lot of people don't that pitch is everthing when setting up drainage. Too little or too much leads to silting up or blocking a line. 2) Beavers in the proper environment can help the land, just not in your situation! (Look at interesting video on PBS Nature kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJ_SoqV7l9yieJY) 3) Good point on different soils, locations and methods in different locations. Excellent analysis and explanations by Farmer Chris and yourself! Don't have enough thumbs to put up on this one!

I went back to the last years video on that swamp field you were talking about. You only charge Farmer Chris $1900 dollars for that work! You were on the job at least 4 days. Onsite the Volvo 140 and Cat D4. You moved in the John Deere 850J then moved it out bringing in the Cat D4. Aaron was on the job one day laying the 6 inch pipe. Matt was on the job part of a day he left at 10:30 Am that day. First day you dug holes looking for fiber optic cable, half a day. Next day Matt was on job and you two layed 8 inch pipe and were rained out. Aaron worked next day and you layed 6 inch pipe, next day Jerry worked with the D4 dozer leveling the ground and you were on the Volvo 140 working; that was a long day past 6:30 PM and you two continued working. For all that time you only charge $1,900 dollars for over at least 4 days time! My question is how do you stay in business you did not generate enough cash to pay your bills on this job. Farmer Chris got a wonderful deal on this job.
