Props to Armin Shimerman for really developing Quark's character arc, with the generous narrative provided by the writers of course. A prime example of how DS9 has impacted Ferengi world-building more than any other branch of the franchise.

Body Parts is a great example of how writers can do so much more in sci-fi when "life happens" to the actors. Nana Visitor was pregnant, and if you look in later episodes, she's more in a secondary role, wearing looser fitting clothes, sitting behind desks more, basically to hide the small bump, but it came a time when they could no longer hide the bump. Rather than writing her out of the beginning of Season 5 or entirely from the show, they made the story to fit her pregnancy into canon. And remember, this is also Alexander Siddig's son she's pregnant with, so it affected 2 actors.
@Renegade2786
@Renegade2786 29 күн бұрын
They did the same thing in Voyager in its forth season. Roxanne Dawson (who plays B'Elanna Torres) was pregnant at the time, so they had her wearing a jacket to hid the bump. And they incorporated her pregnancy into two part episode where she is hollow pregnancy.

When Garak and Worf are fighting, Michael Dorn threw him a bit too hard - and Andrew Robinson hits a Jeffreies Tube door - it breaks the door and behind it you can see some timber, a work bench and some tools. But they kept it in and added the sound effect of the door breaking because it's so quick most people don't notice. I dunno if that means that in "canon" the Defiant is technically built out of wood and plastic... ;-)

Weyoun poisoned Odo in the episode To the Death. He touched him, transferring the poison. Rewatch that scene again. Gowron is a tng character first. So, he was a solid when he became Chancellor... A lot of story lines are set up in this episode that will pay off much later in the show so pay attention to everything that was said and hinted. There are at least three major plot points set up in the background.

This is the sort of thing you only catch when rewatching the series, but we’ve seen smuggler with the purple hair (who Odo tries to arrest) multiple times before. Way back in S2 opener, she gave Li Nalas’ earring to Quark. I believe she also sold Quark the crashed ship that had the baby Jem’ Hadar on board.

yes - she's a Boslic and her name is Rionoj. She's been in a few episodes and also was the one who gave the baby Jem'Hadar to Quark. The reason she's hesitating (but ultimately runs) is because she knows Odo and whilst he's strict and "the cops", he's not "the enemy". I like to think just before they departed, she messaged the infirmary.

"Changeling lady" is informally known as "The Female Founder" or "Female Founder". She has no name. But then none of them do because as she said, when they enter the Link, "the Drop becomes the Ocean" and when they leave the link "the Ocean becomes the Drop". As far as I can tell (and this is no spoiler - I'm just taking what she says at face value, as Odo doesn't contradict her much here)... they're all one being. And separate at the same time. They're kind of like The Borg but also at the same time the complete opposite of The Borg. They don't speak with one voice, and yet they do. They are individuals and they're not. it's developed a little more in future episodes of course, but when you see Female Founder, she IS "The Link" for all intents and purposes. "I AM the Senate" type stuff.

Regarding Nana Visitor‘s pregnancy, they considered making it Shakaar‘s Baby or hide the belly with Clothing and Camera angles (like they did with Gates McFadden halfway through TNG… and would do a second time with Roxann Dawson on _Voyager)_ but they decided on a scientific solution after a freak accident and I thankful that they did. And as pointed out by others, that’s indeed the baby of Visitor and Alexander Siddig. As a sidenote, Quark never told Garak NOT to kill him, didn’t he?

Even if his dealings with Odo are more like a game to Quark than a serious matter, that doesn't mean he _likes_ him. In fact, I bet if the two of them together ever got into one of the kind of Crisises that the Starfleet and/or Bajoran soldiers get into, The two of them would eventually opt for going at each other's throats rather than trying to save them both! 🐺X👹 --> 💥

26:39 I agree with Ollie. It was only fifty five seconds after she so elaborately shook hands with Odo that he suffered that attack. However, I bet the toxin that infected Odo was delivered in more than one part. Probably the last part was delivered at 26:29. And, she was still there at the end of the episode. If she isn't outright another changeling, then she is at least watching him for the Founders. 🕵🏼‍♀️

"Klingonia" lol. Klingons ("tlhIngan") come from the planet Kronos ("Qo'noS") and their faction's name is The Klingon Empire "tlhIngan wo' ". Gowron was "elected" (well, chosen by Picard / The Arbiter of Succession) as Chancellor of the Klingon Empire (TNG: Redemption) They do have a "behind the scenes" emperor - a clone of Kahless ("qeylIS") The Unforgettable - the founder of the Klingon Empire (TNG: Rightful Heir), after the Hurk ("Hur'q") attacked them a thousand years ago. The Hur'q were the ones who stole the Sword of Kahless and hid it - which Worf and Kor found a few weeks ago). No one ever knew what the Hur'q looked like... or how they did it. Only that they come from far, far away... and haven't been heard from since. Apropos of nothing, do you remember that the Sword of Kahless had Kahless' DNA on it... and in the episode, they beamed it into space, in the Gamma Quadrant, and it's just floating around ? Something to ponder, between seasons... 🙂 So ends my TED presentation on the Klingon Empire.

Two great episodes with completely different dramatic approaches! Body Parts gives us a Ferengi cultural lesson and the return of Jeffrey Combs as Brunt: FCA! We also got some wonderful interactions with Garak! Watching yourself die various ways in your own holosuite must have been disturbing as heck for Quark. Throughout the episode, we see that ROM has a heart of gold. Quark's assets at the end was really touching. Broken Link is the conclusion of last season's finale and is one of the best episodes ever! Kira has begun sneezing for the O'Brien baby- which is adorable. Sisko AGAIN does everything for a member of his crew. I can't imagine many other Captains willing to risk everything for one man. (Well, Kirk would) Garak and Odo have developed their friendship since the two partner where Garak blew up his own shop. Now we have Garak setting Odo up for romance with a stunning Bajoran restauranteur! Garak goes full "mission first" to stop the Founders and gets in some licks on Worf- a ballsy move. The Founder telling Garak "They're ALL dead. YOU'RE dead. CATDASSIA is dead. You were dead the moment you attacked us." was chilling. We waited almost all season for some Changling action and this did not disappoint. Now...what to do about Gowron being a Changling? It could mean all our war with the Klingons.

They could only have replaced him since a few seasons into D.S.9. I would have put money down they'd gotten him sometime in season three. But at this point, I began wondering if _Brunt_ was a Changeling. Think about it; the Feringi were the first of the "Alpha Quadrant Powers" to seek out the Dominion. And why? For the reason the Founders feared; for the sake of exploiting and cheating them. And Quark wasn't just the key man in that endeavor,he _still_ had his bar set up at the mouth of the worm hole! The founders would have equated that with Quark being in charge of a military or espionage encampment just outside of their territory . Would the Founders just let that go? I think we could be _sure_ they would strike back at the Feringi, regardless of their other activities. 😒

44:00 DS9 is my favorite ST. As much as I love TNG and TOS, I love the character drama, alien cultures, and galaxy building that having the setting set on a persistent venue affords. If you love DS9 you need to put Babylon 5 on your list of future shows to watch. Its another sci-fi show that takes place on a space station and has alien cultures you learn about over the series. There are a lot of similarities between the two shows in part because the showrunner for B5 went to Paramount with his show as Star Trek on a space station. Well, a short while after turning him down Paramount announces DS9, Star Trek on a space station. There was all sorts of drama over the "borrowing" at the time! The fan drama didn't last too long thankfully and in the end we got two great sci-fi shows out of it in the end.

On the first Rom has certainly come a long way from the guy who wanted to kill his brother to get the bar! I think this is more like rewriting him around season 2 or 3 than precisely character growth, but this Rom is a mostly better character. As for the contract thing on seeing your reaction I wonder why the Ferengi don't have arbitration. It feels like Quark should be able to be like "I obviously meant you'll get my body when I die and you still will it's just going to be a bit later than you anticipated. Can't you just charge me a late fee?" Also Brunt doesn't care about profit in this deal, so I feel like someone should be able to shame him on that. On the other though I like Data I do like Odo is "different" in a way where he likes it that way. Sometimes Trek gives a vibe like everyone envies humans, including even the Q at one point, so Odo being like "No, I don't" is kind of refreshing. They give you a good sense how this is truly upsetting for him. That being a single shaping is confining for him even, making his body like a prison. Salome Jens Founder's speech is also classic. Sidenote: I'm a conservatish Gen-X American, but I want you to know I'm sorry people on the Right insulted you as overly woke or whatever. I actually find you more apolitical than many reactors I watch. And even if I didn't if I wanted my own views of these episodes or life I can just rewatch them on my own.

Weyoun infected Odo with the disease in To the Death. However, it is difficult to see because Levar Burton decided to do extreme close-ups during the exchange. The original intention in the script was Weyoun to put his hand on Odo's arm to give him the infection, and you kind of see it if you know what to look for but it isn't obvious due to the close up shot. Looked better, cinematically, but makes knowing when he got infected less obvious.

They needed to make kits pregnant because the actress who plays kids got pregnant by her partner at the time, the actor who plays bashir. Fun fact an actor from the show battle star Galactic a is nearly an exact look a like to the actor who plays bashir,, they even have similar accents.

Ollie, as a response to the downvotes on your singing, your response in the next reaction should be to sing the WHOLE SONG. And work in the names of the credits as a part of it. Looking forward to it.

Lol, I don't downvote. Long ago I started skipping it or muting him. It's a bit comical to me how most reactors get so into the open title sequences, particularly for Star Trek shows. The theme songs don't even have lyrics. It's not something like Laverne and Shirley. Though, I did always love the theme song to Sanford and Son. That's s solid piece of music and it has no lyrics. One of the few intros I always loved to watch and I was too young to even get any of the jokes.

Was married. I think they divorced. Looking her up Nana Visitor's parents were in dance with Cyd Charisse being an Aunt. Alexander Siddig (Bashir) is of course descended from a man who claimed to be the Muslim Mahdi and his uncle was once the leader of Sudan. So their son, Django it seems, has a fascinating ancestry and a jazzy name.

@@mastershake2782 Well in fairness they were married at the time of this episode. They didn't divorce, it looks like, until a year or two after DS9 ended. (She had a marriage after, but it also ended. He currently has a wife but this year he looks to have stated he was "not quite straight.")

Ollie: "I think season 5 will reveal who is a changeling and who is not.... [etc]". Rmember what they said back in "The Search" - "to become a thing, is to KNOW a thing." ? No spoilers, but... I'll say there's twists and turns along the way. Remember a Founder can be a mirror or a... electronic console. What else do you think they can be? Water? Air? A hair follicle ? A tooth inside one's mouth that can be implanted if the person is unconscious and would never know? Obviously none of that is in the show (because that'd be spoilers) but think about their abilities, what we know they can do, what we THINK they can do... and what they want to achieve. And now imagine you're Sisko looking around your office. A single fibre of the carpet could be a Changeling (dun dun DUUUUUUUUUN). Remember back in season 2, Odo got ill and ended up becoming a big monster that was 20 foot tall and the Bajoran scientist Mora had to help calm him down? Remember when Odo became a huge "tent" to protect Changling-Kira in "Heart of Stone" to stop the tunnel collapsing on her? A single, badly trained Changling (Odo) can stop a mountain collapsing on Kira... Imagine what 200 Changelings all together can do... Could a group of Changelings become something the size of DS9 itself? Could it? You don't know. Enjoy season 5 my dude and yes, we're getting into "The Thing" paranoia territory now.
