Number 1-2-3 should remain in season 2, to wait to be dethroned, but we should have 3 more categories (120mm slim+THICCC and 140mm slim+THICCC) and the test should be with 3 radiators (1 slim 1 THICCC normal And 1 THICCC Densely finned radiator, for both 120mm and 140mm)

And he should make a website for the next season and hire some trusted people to pick the designs they like and also himself ... making 7 models of testing each weak x4 that means 28 fans each week and 7 fans each day and he scheguels what radiator test he does because he has 12 tests in total for each model considering 3 radiator types.

As many have said; reduce the number of variables! If you want to go with the 3700x and test the boost clock, then you should probably pick a dbA level and spin all fans at a speed where they produce the same noise. Of course, figure out a way to get a (part of) your room at the same temperature/humidity at all times. If it's difficult to get 20c in summer, then use a space heater to test at 24c all year round. Alternatively; pick a desired boost clock and lower fan speed until it no longer reaches that clock speed under constant load. Then measure dbA. In any case - I love this show! It's a fantastic way to involve your audience and I love guessing at how the fans will do before seeing the results. Keep it going!

You probably should use a constant heat load to test how they cool instead of a real CPU, and measure the voltage and current to ensure it stays the same for each test. A real PC has too many variables that could change from day to day.
@malloot92244 жыл бұрын
Yeah especially Ryzen has some extreme amount of internal variables that make this very hard to use as a good heating source. A Thermal load tester would be better but a x79 Intel extreme CPU would also work as they are much less variable then more modern CPU's

When thermal testing the 3700x keep clock and vcore constant to keep the variables to a minimum.That variability of the v/f curve based on temperature has been tested by many so I suggest you try it by the end of S2 (or do it one by one) by running blender open data benchmark and recording time spent to complete or similar...(this of course in auto mode with pbo or something to let boost do its thing)
@jameslmorehead4 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing. I manage an engineering lab, and localizing the fewest variables possible is the best way to compare tests. We limit variables to 3 or fewer. Ideally you only have one variable. That's what we call rigid testing, and it's the most reliable data you can obtain.
@ИванСнежков-з9й4 жыл бұрын
I would suggest getting rid entirely of all CPUs and just using a 60W heater. I've seen such devices that look like CPUs and you can easily attach radiator or waterblock to it. They may not be cheap, but they are sure to be cheaper than a whole computer.
@niikon4 жыл бұрын
My exact thoughts. I might add, make sure to monitor power draw to make sure every fan has to cool the same power output.
@JeSuisNerd4 жыл бұрын
I would also add: Make sure to run this test on a computer that will be disconnected from the internet for the duration of the season and unused apart from these tests, as something like microcode updates will impact CPU performance in very sneaky ways.
@WouterVerbruggen4 жыл бұрын
For the "Math" fan, that chirping sound I'm pretty sure it is actually something hitting the shroud. Remember that the blades get stretched in operation. As you said it only happens at max RPM, and that's exactly when the blades get stretched the most. The sound is also very typical for that situation. Looking at the geometry of the fan it's likely those pieces connecting the blades are what touches the shroud. They're thin and, in the middle, free to move quite a lot. As for next season, I'd suggest changing the setup such that you can get bigger differences in temperature. You're ranking the fans on less than a degree of difference, which is very small and should be within error margin. Also testing the unobstructed airflow of the fans could be a nice test. Some of these fans that didn't perform well due to lack of static pressure might perform very good as a case fan
@SevenSevenXAK4 жыл бұрын
Cant wait for the next season, love how this series has grown more and more polished with every episode! In regards to testing with the 3700X, I actually don't think it's the best idea. The point is to measure the best fan designs based on lowest temperature. Using a CPU that is going to auto-adjust its clockspeed, voltage, and power draw at different temperatures is throwing a ton of uncontrollable variables into the mix that skew the testing methodology. Ideally the testing would be done using a dummy-heater with constant heat output, but the next best thing is a CPU with fixed clockspeed and voltage to maintain as close to equal power draw in all tests. Additionally, difference in ambient temps would have an affect on the clockspeed score. E.g. two fans that have the exact same delta-T, (same thermal performance), but one was tested with higher ambients and will have a worse clockspeed.

Instead of 120mm fans again, it would be neat to see larger fans. This would allow for more interesting looking designs on the larger blade area. Does add to print time though. Also as others have mentioned in the past, you can design fans for a slower speed and be quieter instead of max cfm, max pressure. Might be some other metrics to measure by. Also gamers nexus takes three cpu temperature variability out of the equation by using a thermal element with a fixed wattage. When testing thermal solutions.

In a closed case are too many variables that can disort the testing. It should still be on an open testbench. Because a GPU clock responds much stronger to temperature.

So the limiting factor on the RPM of these fans is the torque of the “engine” spinning them. Perhaps find a fan engine that you can set the RPM dispite having heavier fans? This way we can try to find the most optimum fan for that specific RPM. The beautiful compressor design that was massive could have outperformed some other fans if it had decent RPM but it was just too heavy to achieve sufficient RPM for its optimum performance. OR find another constraints to add for us to work with other than geometry/weight of the fan. This way we can learn more about what makes a better fan at specific RPMs, number of fan blades, different sizes or different weights. You could change this constraint for each season of the show moving forward. I think we could see more competitive designs if more was known about the constraints other than geometrical limits of the platform. It’s just an idea, but I think I’d be a cool change to see TL;DR choose an RPM for all fans to run, change the size of the fan platform, choose the number of fan blades, or create another constraint for the fans we make. This could result in more competitive designs

It would also significantly reduce the "fun factor"
@michaelh.96864 жыл бұрын
I disagree. Setting an RPM for all fans to run jut makes it a more competitive event. The fans themselves can still be off the walls wacko if they want. And besides choosing the number of fan blades, any one of these constraints don’t limit what we can design
@ethansloss68544 жыл бұрын
The weight of the fan doesn’t affect the the max RPM. Letting the motor run at full power and unlimited RPM is the fairest way to test. That way you’re testing the efficiency of the fan.

Straight up, the production of this video was top notch. Great video and audio! I would love to see a Spectrogram added in to your testing to help us get a sense of the audio fingerprint of each fan.

is there any news about acceleron? i thought it was getting licenced by some company and mass produced.
@xWood40004 жыл бұрын
It's a maybe, may never come to market. And companies can develop products for years and getting from prototype to mass producing can take a long time
@OzMuGu4 жыл бұрын
@@xWood4000 i know some stuff about product development, i am a mechanical engineer myself. they should have schematics in hand as if they have contacted to the designer of acceleron. they might try to improve it a bit and it shouldn't take much time to do a couple changes. it takes 1 to 4 weeks (depending on the volume) to start mass produce these kind of things after you have some working prototypes. as we can see acceleron is already pretty good at doing its job, i doubt it would take long to start mass producing them. distributing however is a bit different, especially in current condition.
@xWood40004 жыл бұрын
@@OzMuGu Yeah, you are definitely more knowledgeable then. I think there could be some delay related to green lighting it, it's a new development path so contracts have to be made and so forth

One fan being tested for case cooling (I.e airflow), and another being used for the cpu heatsink. That would be amazing 😉 Also, can we send .3mf files? They are far superior. :)

I like the current setup for fan testing, particularly when compared to testing in a case. Once you put the cooler in a case you'll be limited to testing how well that case and/or case fan setup can get air to the cooler rather than the total performance of the tested fan. Keep up the great work, James.

Great video as always and I am all in on your ideas for season 2 of the fan showdown series man. Factoring in the Ryzen 7 3700X's frequencies dependence on temperatures with air cooling this time around will be interesting for sure. I can not wait for the first video and how peoples fan designs will fair. Appreciate all the tedious testing and hard work that goes into making these kinds of videos. The main reason I like watching your content is because no one else is doing it and it is creative as well. Keep up the great content!

The smoke slithering along the ground/table was a really great addition! Really demonstrates the turbulence very well, and defenitely should be used for future fans testing!

Hey man I hope the fan showdown hasn’t become a drag, take a break between seasons! I’m sure it’s a lot of work. There was a good suggestion to setup a subreddit or discord server to submit fan fans. I also want to say I really appreciate all the time and effort you put into these videos they are really great! It’s always nice to watch intelligent people work!

I could tell the video quality has changed a bit before your ad spot. Looking good! As far as the testing goes, and switching over to an air cooler, my only suggestion would be retest the top 5 (maybe top 6, because I want to see what that thing looks like inside a case) Keep up the great work! This is definitely a fun series to watch.
