I season and cook on several new Blackstone Griddles each month. I've learned much about griddle seasoning over the years. Most importantly, I learned that many people try to overcomplicate the process. If you just got a brand new Blackstone Griddle and are wondering what the easiest and most-tried method of seasoning is...you've come to the right place!
Get everything I use directly from Blackstone:

Lastly, griddles are fun. I really enjoy griddling...I mean, look at my channel! However, I just want you to know something. When I say, praise the Lord at the end of my videos. It's not just a figure of speech. I give all glory for my everything in my life to my Lord and saviour Jesus Chris. He rescued me from the grave. He picked me up from the pit of darkness I was in. He has given me eternal life and he wants to do the same for you.
John 3:16
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Do it today, my friends. Put your trust in Jesus. Trust him. Let him guide your life...and your eternity.
-Todd

You are absolutely right, Todd. A few months back, my neighbor gave me a 36" Blackstone that had been sitting on his back deck for God knows how long. It was rusted pretty badly and looked horrible. I simply heated it up, applied oils and got a grill brick to remove the rust. Took me about an hour. I then wiped away all of the rust residue and heated it up again. I applied a few coat of INEXPENSIVE .EVERYDAY cooking oil and began seasoning it. I use this griddle EVERYDAY in my mobile food business in Kentucky. It works and performs fine!

I just finished seasoning my new grill and worked perfect. I put 5 coats on with vegetable oil because thats what I had. Then I did my first cook with sausage, onions and potatoes just to get the flavor going on the grill. They tasted amazing. Thanks for making it so simple and straight forward. Yay. I’m so excited to get grilling.

Never had time in my life to learn how to grill. Been eyeballing a Blackstone Griddle for a while since I retired and last spring purchased one. I am far from being a griddle master but I am a griddle user and love it. Easy to use, easy to clean. I cook and before everyone gets set down to eat, I have it cleaned. Not a job at all. I have no idea why people shy away from cleaning after every use. I stumbled across your video and this is what I been looking for. A no nonsence guide to using my Blackstone. Thank you!!

Hi, Rick - Thanks for watching! I'm glad you are enjoying your griddle! I am in agreement with you 100%. Try not to stumble on to the floor laughing at this. I just saw a comment from a user, "Blackstone Griddles are junk. It takes hours to clean them." I think that some people are better off just cooking chicken nuggets in microwave ovens for the rest of their lives, don't you? Thanks again for watching. Have a Merry Christmas!

I seasoned mine once after i got it....but i was impatient and wanted to cook right away....my eggs got stuck haha...pretty messy....now 1 week later i cleaned everything up and the griddle is burning for over 1h already while I'm enjoying my beer and this beautiful morning in Sweden. Now the surface is to 90% black and I'm sure there will be no more sticking issues what so ever. Btw....i used canola oil haha....thank you for this video and your time!

The blackstone griddle caught my eye in another cooking video I was watching so I googled it just for fun. Couldn't believe how affordable they are, we will definitely replace our very budget traditional LP grill with one of these when it comes time. I used to be a short order cook and miss the flat top grilling. Thanks for the educational and to the point video!

When the Black Stone first came out there were not that many videos that did justice to seasoning this beast. Todd I have watched a lot of your videos through out the years and this one is the best one yet. Simple and easy to understand. I love my Black Stone. I just wish my grill tent would have lasted just as long. lol. The canopy part just came apart. So before I can use my Black Stone again. I need to buy a new canopy top. My neighbor sent pics to my wife as the wind just ripped it apart. If anyone doesn't know what a Black Stone Griddle is? Look it up. Its better than a 6 burner grill. Never again will I buy a 600 dollar grill that will rust and then have to replace parts to get a few more years out of it. Good job Black Stone. Thank you.

Mine came with a scraper so I scraped it off put more olive oil then the steaks WoW !!! Clean up for me was pouring more oil on it and scraped it into the hole on the griddle then poured a little more oil on it then quickly use paper towel to get most of it up.put the cover back on it. I’m on my second grilling and like I said I’m in LOVE!

Agree, appreciate the simplicity to which to explain this to us non oil technicians. I was a bit disappointed last night after my first cook on my blackstone. Seemed the burgers burned the top on the griddle and it was a pain to clean. So much I left it till morning while I cooled down. I used the blackstone company conditioner and applied as instructed but something must not gone right..ie conditioner bonded. Anyway, I wish I saw this video and used canola. Simple is best. thank you.

Hi, David. Thanks for subscribing. I appreciate it. I've been cooking on Blackstone Griddles for going on 7 years. I seasoned my first one with vegetable or canola (I forget oil) oil. I have since seasoned probably close to 100 Blackstone around the country with olive, canola, or vegetable oil. I know folks who have used flaxseed and liked it while I've met many folks on the road this year who told me they used flaxseed and greatly regretted it. I've talked to folks who say they have only seasoned with lard and bacon grease while one person told me that seasoning with bacon grease is the worst thing you can do. I think it comes down to personal preference to some extent. It can sound intimidating if you've never done it. Go with olive, canola, or vegetable oil and you'll be fine. Here's an impromptu seasoning video I did on the road in Vegas earlier this year. The background audio is a bit loud but you can again see how easy it is: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqCvm3SXhNlnqZY Thanks for watching & God bless.

Also the first time I seasoned my griddle i didn't have anything to cook right away so I used my favorite seasonings and just sprinkled it across it let it absorb up that, cleaned wiped it off and did it a few more times. This video is a good point people over thinking it and blah blah. Nothing to over think, I've done many cast irons the same way and both my griddle and cast irons are smooth as glass and cook extremely well.

Nice video. Thanks. I subscribed. I seasoned my new grill last week, and used Blackstone seasoning. It was easy. I did four coatings and I definitely think that was plenty. The jar suggested three to five. By the third coating, it took some time for it to burn off. The level of smoke definitely decreased. We christened it with smash burgers, that came out very good. I’m looking forward to some steaks in the future.

Great video!! You just described me to a T! Bought my first Blackstone yesterday and was actually afraid to season it for fear of doing "something wrong" and ruining my $400 investment before getting to use it. I was out in the woods with very few stores around and the only option I had was Crisco. It seemed to work alright but don't believe I let it burn off long enough before reapplying and ended up with some ridges. I will use Canola oil as you suggested and start over. You're supposed to do thin layers of oil at a time to make the coat even and to cure to the metal quickly. Lots of oil will make it have a tacky goopy feel when it dries. Also should probably torch some oil onto the sides of the gridle that aren't going to come into contact with your food, just for the sake of moisture protection. Not a problem in all areas, but high humidity is an issue in my area.

Pointers for new griddle buyers. Check your griddle top. If it only has one cross member welded on the underside of the top...do not turn the griddle on highest heat setting. It will warp. Only buy the griddles that have 3 cross-members welded underneath

Just did 5 layers of the Blackstone seasoning, wish the front edge got more color. Gonna pick up a propane torch to touch up the front.

Bacon should ALWAYS be the first thing you cook, although I say this knowing nothing more about seasoning a griddle than what I've learned in the video, but I do know that everything is always better with bacon! 😃
