You are absolutely right, Todd. A few months back, my neighbor gave me a 36" Blackstone that had been sitting on his back deck for God knows how long. It was rusted pretty badly and looked horrible. I simply heated it up, applied oils and got a grill brick to remove the rust. Took me about an hour. I then wiped away all of the rust residue and heated it up again. I applied a few coat of INEXPENSIVE .EVERYDAY cooking oil and began seasoning it. I use this griddle EVERYDAY in my mobile food business in Kentucky. It works and performs fine!

I've had my 36" (old front grease trap model ☹) for 6 years in my gazebo here in Wisconsin. Anybody hesitating to buy one, DON'T! They don't wear out, the burners are protected from the cooking service. I've probably gone thru 40-50 twenty lb gas tanks on it, and not a flaw in it yet! I will be getting the new one with the air fryer, this one will either be gifted to someone less fortunate than myself, or moved to my kitchen. The breakfasts it makes are unbelievable. You can serve 10 people hot pancakes at the same time! Hashbrowns in the corner, bacon on the left eggs in the middle. Dip bread in the bacon grease and throw your bread on there and you'll have perfect toast. There's nothing like the smell of onions and peppers grilling in butter for chicken fajitas. Throw the tortillas on to soften them up.

Never had time in my life to learn how to grill. Been eyeballing a Blackstone Griddle for a while since I retired and last spring purchased one. I am far from being a griddle master but I am a griddle user and love it. Easy to use, easy to clean. I cook and before everyone gets set down to eat, I have it cleaned. Not a job at all. I have no idea why people shy away from cleaning after every use. I stumbled across your video and this is what I been looking for. A no nonsence guide to using my Blackstone. Thank you!!

Hi, Rick - Thanks for watching! I'm glad you are enjoying your griddle! I am in agreement with you 100%. Try not to stumble on to the floor laughing at this. I just saw a comment from a user, "Blackstone Griddles are junk. It takes hours to clean them." I think that some people are better off just cooking chicken nuggets in microwave ovens for the rest of their lives, don't you? Thanks again for watching. Have a Merry Christmas!

I got my Blackstone 22" last week, quick to assemble and used it same day. I didn't even have Canola oil so I just used cheap vegetable oil following all of your steps above and let the oil smoke off and then recoated and cut up a large Onion and fried it completely to push around and coat the top until the onions started to blacken. Cleaned off the onions and proceeded to make some Philly Cheese Steaks with great results. Other than getting my timing right on using the grill and cooking times it was a success. Afterwards I cleaned off the surface with the scrapers, splashed on some water and re-scraped, let the water burn off and recoated the surface as it cooled. Ready for the next cooking adventure. :-)

After about 2-3 coats of oil, cut an onion in half and scrape your griddle with an onion. It will give it a phenomenal aroma.

I got a griddle top stove a Sams Club 2 Days ago for $200.00 dollars I LOVE IT !!! I turned it on high put olive oil on it burned it some. Mine came with a scraper so I scraped it off put more olive oil then the steaks WoW !!! Clean up for me was pouring more oil on it and scraped it into the hole on the griddle then poured a little more oil on it then quickly use paper towel to get most of it up.put the cover back on it. I’m on my second grilling and like I said I’m in LOVE!

When the Black Stone first came out there were not that many videos that did justice to seasoning this beast. Todd I have watched a lot of your videos through out the years and this one is the best one yet. Simple and easy to understand. I love my Black Stone. I just wish my grill tent would have lasted just as long. lol. The canopy part just came apart. So before I can use my Black Stone again. I need to buy a new canopy top. My neighbor sent pics to my wife as the wind just ripped it apart. If anyone doesn't know what a Black Stone Griddle is? Look it up. Its better than a 6 burner grill. Never again will I buy a 600 dollar grill that will rust and then have to replace parts to get a few more years out of it. Good job Black Stone. Thank you.

Now the surface is to 90% black and I'm sure there will be no more sticking issues what so ever. Btw....i used canola oil haha....thank you for this video and your time!

Agree, appreciate the simplicity to which to explain this to us non oil technicians. I was a bit disappointed last night after my first cook on my blackstone. Seemed the burgers burned the top on the griddle and it was a pain to clean. So much I left it till morning while I cooled down. I used the blackstone company conditioner and applied as instructed but something must not gone right..ie conditioner bonded. Anyway, I wish I saw this video and used canola. Simple is best. thank you.

While you don't NEED to use a specific oil, it has been proven that certain oils (typically from seeds) create a harder and more durable polymerization on the steel. So there is a benefit. But like Todd said, if you use the blackstone and use oil in your cooking, you won't really have to worry about losing your seasoning.

Worked a flat top for about 15yrs managing restaurants - best/easiest i found was use the grease from grill trap with a grill brick then wipe.it clean; take a piece of bread with butter to season it first then discard the bread and spray some non stick cooking spray on top. To break it back in after its set and become cold 2 or 3 pieces of bacon and bread and butter technique work superb. Fyi you can order CHEAP big black grill bricks online the ones at most stores are just over priced and break.

Just don't do as I did and use the only cooking oil I had on hand.. Coconut oil... although generally a more healthy option, I never fully burned off and turned all my food black (not burned). ended up going at it with high heat, water, a copper scrubbing pad and shop towels till it was clean and then seasoned with canola oil.. Love this thing now almost as much as my smoker.

That was several years ago and it is still the best skillet in my kitchen. Vegetable oil right off the shelf works just fine.

Also the first time I seasoned my griddle i didn't have anything to cook right away so I used my favorite seasonings and just sprinkled it across it let it absorb up that, cleaned wiped it off and did it a few more times. This video is a good point people over thinking it and blah blah. Nothing to over think, I've done many cast irons the same way and both my griddle and cast irons are smooth as glass and cook extremely well.

Hi Justin - You are correct. I literally had a guy send me this message, "I've seasoned mine 5 times. Do I need to season it 6 times or is 5 times enough?" Now, I just laugh and ignore those questions.
