Just seasoned my 22". One big surprise. After the initial heat up on high, once I touched the griddle with my paper towel to spread the oil (Blackstone Seasoner and Cleaner) it immediately caught fire. Then used an old cotton wash cloth. Same results. My high setting reads on the laser thermometer about 725 degrees on the griddle surface. Wasn't expecting that. Turned the heat down a bit and did 7 layers, so we'll see...

If you're storing it in a nice climate controlled basement, you can probably leave it. If in garage or outdoors, you'll want to season it and probably rub it with oil once or twice per month. A little spot of rust will take you a whole day to fix.

I did this on high and the Blackstone seasoning erupted into flames. It was insane. I got out my new temp gun and it was 600 degrees. Is this normal? Everyone says season on high. It's 35 degrees outside and I got a Blackstone fire and throwing burning paper towels off my deck. I may stick to grilling, less dangerous than the griddle lol.
@madbackyard25 күн бұрын
600 degrees is normal but not the seasoning igniting. Was it the oil or your paper towels catching on fire? I obviously didn’t run into this issue in the video on high heat. You may just need to switch out your paper towels a little sooner befiore they get so hot
@bajacuffs25 күн бұрын
@madbackyard the Blackstone oil ignited then it instantly spread across the whole griddle catching my paper towel. I turned it to low and let it cool but it only cooled to 500-550 after half an hour so I tried it again and it ignited again. Tonight I'll start on low and do the process again

For the record you can totally use soapy water to clean your cast irons, especially if you're going to immediately season again. Soap is good at cutting through grease, but it'll take some seriously strong soap plus elbow grease to cut through layers of polymerized oils.
@madbackyard6 ай бұрын

It’s not cast iron…… cold rolled steel
@dominicp.2702Ай бұрын
Prep, maintenance and cooking is exactly the same for both. Only difference is that cast iron HAS to be manufactured thicker because it is too brittle to handle cooling from the casting process. The benefit to carbon steel is since it can be forged or stamped much thinner, it will react to temperature controls faster.

Soap does not not not affect seasoning. False information. Years ago soap contained lye. That is no longer an issue. Dawn dish soap is perfect on cast iron.

Except that Blackstone explicitly says NOT to use soap on the cast iron, other than for the initial clean as he mentioned, so if you care about your warranty and your equipment…it’s best not to FAFO. He’s simply presenting instructions based on Blackstone’s own recommendations.
