How to Season a New Blackstone Griddle

How to season a new Blackstone griddle is probably the #1 question that new flat top grill owners have… You may be nervous about getting the seasoning process right or wondering what oil to use to season your griddle. Well, I’m here to help!
I’ve seasoned a TON of cast iron pieces and some other griddle brands as well, and this seasoning process works great every time.
Since your Blackstone griddle is brand new, you want to start by knocking down some of the higher points on the griddle surface (run your hand over it before you turn it on and you’ll see what I’m talking about). You can use a grill brick, but I just used some 120 grit sandpaper to knock off the high edges a bit from the surface.
Then, get a bowl of warm soapy water (dish soap is fine) and wash the surface of the griddle so that you’re starting with a clean surface before applying your seasoning.
Next, make sure that you use fresh water to rinse the soap off and then let the griddle dry completely.
And then it’s time to season your new Blackstone griddle! We used Crisco for this seasoning, but you can also use avocado oil, the Blackstone Seasoning and Cast Iron Conditioner, or most other oils.
We just applied about 1-2 tablespoons of Crisco to the pre-heated surface and used some long grill tongs and a few paper towels to evenly distribute the oil all over the griddle surface, and the inside and outside edges.
The key here is to apply MANY MINI (or thin) layers… We applied 5 layers of seasoning on our new Blackstone griddle.
Once you get the first coat of shortening or oil down, let it heat for about 5-10 minutes or until the smoke starts to die way down… You’ll notice that there is less smoke “rolling” off the surface of the griddle. Then, it’s time to apply another thin coat of your Crisco or oil using the tongs and paper towels, let it heat again until the smoke slows, and then apply another coat.
And then you’ve seasoned your new Blackstone and you’re ready for the first cook!

Followed the FTK seasoning process to the letter, with excellent results. I now have many layers of seasoning on my blackstone. It’s completely nonstick and cleans up easy every cook. The quality of the food is next level too…whole other league! I’ve never had a bad cook on the flat top, and credit to FTK & his seasoning process, it totally works! I find his content to be exhaustive (which I like), and proven to be correct & proper.

I just received my Masterbuilt Griddle Grill & Smoker. The heat range is from 150F - 700F. I will be doing a Burn-In to get rid of all the factory/manufacture’s oils. Is this sanding process you would also recommend for it’s Griddle? It’s a removable Griddle so you can Smoke & Grill while not using the Griddle.

Neil. I loved this video. I probably watched 5 times after getting my griddle (I've had it for 2 weeks) I got a little nervous when you suggested to sand it. While seasoning, all I could think about was that I sanded too much. But by my 5th seasoning, I could see the sand marks go away an knew I was good. I've watched a ton of your other cooking videos and decided to make smash burgers tomorrow as my first cook. A total rookie to this style of cooking but very excited. It looks like a lot more work than grilling but looking forward to all the possibilities. As a side note, you and Amy seem to be a great team/couple. The love for cooking and each other really shows. Look forward to future videos.

I've had my Blackstone 22" for just about a week and I"m seasoning it with avocado oil. The first thing I did was to bless the surface with 80 grit sandpaper on my orbital sander. After 5 cycles of seasoning, I tried a piece of french toast on it this morning. it cooked very nicely in the center, "hot zone". I also used the remaining egg mix for scrambled eggs and as long as I was able to keep it in the "hot zone", the eggs did not stick to the surface! I going to try more seasoning for the griddle in the oven at 425 to extend the seasoning further out to the corners.

Very (!) good job. I know I’ve commented on being an old cast iron guy before. You have this down, 100%. My only thing to add, after seasoning a couple of Blackstone: If your color doesn’t uniform up, right away, it will. Neil got a very beautiful season on this one. It is a lack of heat uniformity. If is really bugs you, use a propane torch to heat cooler spots. They will mostly be on the outsides, and they will be identical looking in seconds. And just remember that the only trick to perfect iron cooking, is to do it all the time. You can’t ruin iron. Without a torch. 😀

Thanks for this video - it helped quite a bit when seasoning my new griddle. One thing to note though - While it is quite alright to use a paper towel, DO NOT use the 'Blue Shop Towels'. They WILL come apart and give you unwanted bits of PT on your griddle. (Ask me how I know) Once I ditched those and went with my store bought Bounty paper towels, it was smooth sailing. (Or should I say, seasoning) :)

Good video King, very much how I cleaned and seasoned mine when I got it last September. I got the Blackstone seasoning conditioner (probably Crisco in their packaging), but I also use avocado oil, it's heathier than some oils and has a high heat point. So, after you get playing with this new tool (lol - it's a toy, admit it!) love to see a video on cooking with the air fryers! Just a though.

I do not feel like I am wasting my time. Well organized and easy to follow. Not jumping back and forth to one person talking over the other. Well done! So, here is my question. Looking to purchase my first griddle. My wife and I have five children and we are planning to use the griddle quite often. What would you recommend? I have watched the reviews pros/cons. What is your go to griddle? The first one that comes to mind? Appreciate your input! Keep the videos coming!

Was that a metal dog food bowl that you used for the water? I use them too. There great for bringing your food out to the griddle and then you can use it as a cover to steam your food. They're cheap and they work great and you can get them at your grocery store!!! Plus, you once asked if anyone bought their thermal gun before they had gotten a griddle top, I did! Hey king, just picked up a BS 36in and thank you so much for your vids. I seasoned last night and checking this afternoon, I have great color in the middle but several places around the outside 2-3 inches I have very tacky, sticky coverage. Will those areas eventually season up fine or do I need to scrape back down and start seasoning all over again on those areas? Used the crisco after sanding, washing and rinsing. Thanks.
@TheFlatTopKing

no just keep cooking...try cooking the heck of of onions....keep moving around and bring the heat to the outside parts that are sticky... you could put on low and keep on longer as well.. the sticky tells us that the oil didn’t have a chance to burn off

You're the man! I've been watching your videos for days not. So you put on the last coat of oil, and then it is ready for the next cook? Do I need to oil the surface again before I cook or is it good to go since I greased it up already. Does that make sense?

Although I am greatly impressed with the Pit Boss, I ultimately purchased the exact Blackstone you have and love it. We use the air fryers A Lot. I am surprised that no Pit Boss reviewer questions the longevity of the ceramic surface or the lost of griddle surface due to that grease hole. One thing about a cast iron surface it will last.
@TheFlatTopKing
@TheFlatTopKing 2 жыл бұрын
Oh i have questions definitely but how long will it last takes time. That to now is the biggest question. I have a solution to one problem already. So now its down to longevity. Absolutely pumped about the blackstone. Im excited about the air fryer as well. Do you cook on your griddle than melt cheese in there.
@warrenwest311

@@TheFlatTopKing never melted cheese in the fryer, I close the lid for cheese melting. It’s great for Hamburger night. Hamburger on the flat top, fries in the fryers, warm buns in the warming bin, wife makes coleslaw. Although I have tried smash burgers, and press my own Burgers nothing beats the convenience of Sam’s Club frozen 1/3 pounders and when cooked on Flat Top they are very juicy and good. Add your hamburger sauce some cheese, lettuce, tomato and red onions and it’s better and bigger than any fast food and most every restaurant.

@@TheFlatTopKing BTW when I see you use the plastic tools on the Pit Boss it looks very unprofessional for flat top cooking. I like a steel spatula that I can chop up meat, dice chicken, make cheese steak and cut sandwiches in half. In the indoor kitchen I always get lectured on using the correct non metal on our non stick cookware, outside on the flat top or bbq grill it’s my kitchen and I want real metal tools.

One recommendation have your wife be the one to cook on the Pit Boss. 1. Showing the Pit Boss is newbie friendly 2. She will bring up common newbie questions and mistakes you could address while filming or in post edit. 3. Not too many women doing flat iron videos Her KZbin channel flat top queen, she does look and sound good on video.

First, thank you for your service. And thank you for this video. I just won a 36 inch Blackstone griddle at a fundraiser and am seasoning it this weekend. I’ve been watching many videos and reading articles on the seasoning process. This was very helpful. I did do the sanding already thanks to your video and probably did a bit more than you did, but I’m like that. I like the Crisco idea, but I don’t have any. I do, however, have grape seed and avocado oils for cooking. So I’m going to do a few coats of grape seed oil first. If there are any areas in the front not black, I’ll turn the griddle around. Then a couple coats of avocado oil to finish. I’ll follow your advice about preheating slowly and avoid warping. I’m really enjoying all of your other videos as well. I love to cook and am really looking forward to having fun with this griddle. It’s my first.
