This week on Dining on a Dime, host Lucas Peterson sets out on a rare before-noon jaunt, to sample the breakfast fare at Seattle’s Tilikum Place Cafe. Tilikim Place is known for their Dutch baby pancakes, cooked and served in individual cast iron skillets. In addition to explaining the history behind their name, Peterson tastes some Dutch babies of both the sweet and savory varieties, but is sure to top them all off with maple syrup.
This season of Dining on a Dime is brought to you by the new 2017 Toyota Corolla.

I loved this episode. Dutch babies were kind of my speciality when I was a kid, especially for Mother's Day. My favorite way to serve/eat them was topped with just powdered sugar and a little lemon juice. Seeing Lucas enjoy them brought back some great memories of cooking with my family. Thanks!

I live fairly close to this place, and i have to say it is probably one of if not the most simply perfect restaurants in the world, It deserves a michelin star because of its simplicity and uniqueness while also being something virtually everybody everywhere could find a comforting familiarity with it, as virtually every culture everywhere has some form of a baked sweet/savory breakfast dish that is fairly universal but comes in many different shapes forms and mediums, whether its a french crepe, a southern pancake , a belgium waffle... but here in seattle, we like our breakfast foods that pair with a good cup of coffee, and thus the dutch babies of tillicum cafe are absolutely the quintessential must have dish of the pacific northwest... If that doesnt deserve a michelin star then i do not see how anything else could.. This place, will have on most sundays a line stretching four or five blocks down the road, and no less than a 3 hour wait time.. but due to it being in the heart of the city , it is an acceptable wait time as you can wander the back alleys of old town seattle and experience the true nature of my beloved metro jungle.... Pike place seems to get most if not all of the attention internationally and what not, but i believe this area of seattle is a cant miss experience, it is and always will be what I love about seattle.. while there are pockets of the city that have become exhausted with underfunding and overcrowding of people who do not care about where they're at, and while the world media has sadly tarnished my cities reputation over the chaz incident and other political issues that have harmed the city, and while the market has seemed to have taken a brutal beating over the last 15 years from the sonics leaving, to the seattle center getting overrun by undesirables causing the funding to get cut short... There is still a part of the city that is absolutely beautiful and sadly unrecognized even by some locals ... and I challenge any visitors to see for themselves why seattle at one time was the most futuristic and inspiring city in the world, and why those who come here never want to leave... There is a untold story about us washingtonians, and tillicum cafe absolutely aligns with this story , as we simply are a different type of people. And it is a different type of food experience, in a very different type of setting ... but this is my home, and you are all welcome to visit anytime, just please look both ways before you cross the street, none of us know how to drive lol

I NEED THE RECIPE FOR THAT BATTER! Everywhere I try to find a dutch baby recipe all the pictures show a very thin batter and they end up less thick than a normal pancake, BUT HERE they're so big and I saw the batter being poured, it was substantially thicker than any dutch baby recipe I can find, and the finished dutch babies in this video is so much bigger than any pictures of dutch babies anywhere else. HOW DO?

I am not sure. But isn't Lucas' explanation of the word "dutch" in the beginning wrong? The dutch word for german is "duits" and the dutch word for dutch is "diets" right? Or maybe i am wrong haven't studied this. But it seems like something in the way he is phrasing it is wrong.
@onion115

Ianthe22 He said the German word for German is Deutch and it got bastardized into the word "Dutch."
@Ianthe22
@Ianthe22 8 жыл бұрын
I see. So it is wrong what he is saying isn't it? That is if what you replied is what he ment. If we are talking about the words being "bastardized"(don't like the term bastardized at all, i think it is misleading, but i will use it here in context) both Deutsch and Dutch are bastardized words. They both originate from a proto-germanic language. Like an early language for early germanic tribes. If he is referring to pensylvanian dutch, then it's another thing. They claim their roots from germany i think. That "dutch" as in pensylvanian dutch is derived from Germany(Deutschland). Maybe i'm making it sound complex and boring, but i do think they are different things. If he ment dutch as in pensylvanian dutch, then it's just me. I just misunderstood it cause i am not from america and wasn't familiar with the pensylvanian dutch origin.
@Ianthe22
@Ianthe22 8 жыл бұрын
Alison Lee Hi I just rewatched the beginning of the video where he speaks about the etymology. I actually think he is wrong. Deutsch in the old language means people/"folk"(or several other things) -land explains itself. Now Germany as we know now, which was united in 1871, is the referred to as Deutschland. But i don't think it is right somehow to draw a direct line between the word deutsch and all that. It's the way he sets it up that makes it somehow wrong. Dutch can also mean just folk or people. In that case pennsylvania dutch just means pennsylvania folks. Which makes it more or less a latin term. gawd.. tried to make it more simple. It's not that easy cause the origin is so misunderstood and complex.
@eater
@eater 8 жыл бұрын
The Pennsylvania Dutch are actually of German ancestory and speak German. They are called "Dutch" because of a poor pronunciation/translation of "Deutsche" in American history.
@Ianthe22
@Ianthe22 8 жыл бұрын
Eater I see. I didn't know that. Like watching it from a europeans perspective, that didn't know the history of pennsylvania dutch, i wouldn't have come to that conclusion. Because the there is a connection between the word dutch and deutsch. So he is referring to a mispronunciation in american history. Well when certain dialects and or neighbouring countries to Germany say deutsch it can sometimes sound shortened and resemble dutch more i guess. Ty for clearing it up.
