Haven't seen this episode since the days of VHS when the Discover Channel actually showed interesting programs.

God I wish I'd have gone AW instead of AQ... Oh well. All's well that ends well. Blessed to have the opportunities I had, which led to a great retirement today. When the P-8s first arrived to replace the P-3s, I was dating the (adult) daughter of a retired USN Admiral who was a P-3 pilot . We were on the computer lamenting the arrival of the P-8s. The Admiral's wife asked: "What's wrong with the P-8?" Simultaneously, the Admiral and I both replied: "It's missing two engines."

I was an Ax2 50 years ago. I don’t think they have that rate anymore. We were just ATs in a VP Squadron. I was in VP23 which has been decommissioned along with NAS Brunswick, Maine.

@@Chris_at_Home I was also in VP23. 1980-84. ADAR to AD2, and upper 10% of my rate at time to "cross rate or get out"... DDA tech rep relied on me. Even tried to recruit me. I miss the peaceful sigh of her engines in flight. Fortunately they fly overhead frequently.

Hey kids, there was a time 30 years ago when The Discovery channel had programs you discovered new things. The Learning Channel was filled with programs where you learned things. History channel was non-stop World War 2. Yeah, we called it the boob tube and said it would rot your brain. We had no idea how bad it could get.

What they don't tell you is that the P3 Orion was originally a transport whose life was cut short in its life due to the wing falling off. Seems like the vibration set up by the engine after several hours caused the main spar to crystalize and break. The cure was to reposition the engines and the wing and lower the speed about 100 knots. It's been flying great since then.
@Paul51178 Жыл бұрын
The P-3 Orion was never a transport. The Electra was the transport and the P-3 was a derivative of that design, with a lot of structural and system changes and improvements. Those things you mention as a cure aren't true.
@bryanst.martin713411 ай бұрын
The Lockheed Electra II did have teething pains. The very powerful engines could set up resonances through the wingspar which over time could result in oscillations severe enough to crack the spar causing said destruction. Two solutions were applied. Pitching the engines a few degrees up and timing the engines so as that the propeller blades didn't cross the wing centerline simultaneously. I have flown many hours on her. I have enjoyed weightlessness in her cabin, as well as 6G pull outs as an observer. I saw the critter in Loch Ness through her FLIR in '81. She can withstand a 7G landing, and receive a cursory inspection. I miss her. I miss building her engines, gearboxes, propellers, APU's, and even being able to fix them over the telephone. She was the product of post war refinement that is hard to match today. VP23 flew one from BNAS to Moffet Ca. the long way. Iced down hundreds of feet of fuel delivery hose in Maine winter to fuel the plane. She was heavy on take off. Climbed to max altitude and loitered 1 and 4. Arrived @ Moffet Field California from the west.

The Electra problems (not Orion) were fixed and both planes went on to successful service lives.
